CHESS 2025: Post-survey report for 2025 NEON AOP Assignable Asset collection of East River and Washington Gulch, Almont and Upper Taylor watersheds at Crested Butte, CO

This report contains details of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) Research Support Services (RSS) Assignable Asset (AA) flights of the East River, Almont and Upper Taylor watersheds near Crested Butte, CO, June–July 2025. The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) contracted the NEON AOP AA flights to observe watersheds of interest near Crested Butte with remotely sensed data including high resolution LiDAR, imaging spectroscopy, and high-resolution camera imagery. The report includes a summary of the acquired flight lines over the planned survey areas, results of calibration flights, and results of the acquired data. The report details how the AOP has met the contracted delivery requirements in terms of the data delivered, quality of the data, and describes issues that resulted in data degradation or data loss. CHESS Project Description: The Colorado Headwaters Ecological Spectroscopy Study (CHESS) comprised a multi-week airborne remote sensing and field observation campaign in the Upper Gunnison Basin, Colorado, conducted in June and July of 2025. Airborne remote sensing was conducted by the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP), concurrent with a field campaign run by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Watershed Function Science Focus Area (SFA), and NASA-JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) program. Between June 10 and July 18, 2025, the NEON AOP flight team collected high-resolution aerial imaging spectroscopy and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data over three domains: the Upper East River (CRBU), Almont Triangle (ALMO), and the Upper Taylor Basin (UPTA). In coordination with the flights, a field campaign acquired ground-truth observations, including observations of vegetation composition, foliar traits, forest demography, and subsurface properties in 18 core sampling areas within the domains. Additional surface water observations were taken at over 380 point locations. All CHESS campaign datasets can be found within the CHESS ESS-DIVE data portal: https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/portals/chess. Funding Acknowledgement: Field and remote-sensing data acquisition was performed under a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (80NSSC24K1005). This work was also supported by the Watershed Function Science Focus Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory funded by the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research under Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231.

Life-cycle Analysis of Conversion of Post-Use Plastic via Pyrolysis with the GREET Model

In this report, we present an updated LCA of the PTF pathway developed at Argonne. Benavides et al. (2017) analyzed the environmental impact of producing ultra-low sulfur (ULS) diesel fuel from PUP via pyrolysis (the most common PTF technology). We used the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies (GREET®) model and collected data from eight PTF companies to assess the potential energy and environmental benefits associated with this technology (Argonne, 2020). We conducted a survey and aggregated the dataset based on the different responses, which included plant capacity, process yields, feedstock composition, material and energy inputs, and outputs, and other parameters. We calculated the energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and water consumption of its intermediate product pyrolysis oil and final product PUP-derived ULS diesel and compared the results to those metrics for their conventional counterparts (crude naphtha and petroleum ULS diesel fuel).

The Interaction Between Boundary Layer and Convection Schemes in a WRF Simulation of Post‐Cold‐Frontal Clouds over the ARM East North Atlantic Site

The correct representation of lowlevel midlatitude clouds found in the wake of cold fronts strongly relies on the representation of planetary boundary layer (PBL) and convection processes, which are typically parameterized separately in numerical models. Using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF), this study investigates how distinct pairs of PBL and convection parameterization schemes represent cloud fraction in the postcoldfrontal region. The simulations focus on the region of the DOEARM Eastern North Atlantic observation site in the Azores Islands in the wake of a cold front that passed on December 25, 2015. Different PBL and convection schemes are combined to create 12 distinct configurations. The main differences between the selected physical parameterizations are the strength of vertical mixing and the entrainment. The simulations produce a wide range of cloud fractions, where some configurations significantly underestimate while others clearly overestimate satellite and surfacebased estimates of cloud fraction. A skill score is used to quantitatively assess the performance of each configuration with respect to groundbased radar data. The key processes that are found to significantly impact the cloud fraction distribution are the strength of the PBL decoupling, the vertical wind shear, entrainment and detrainment rates in shallow convection and the occurrence of drizzle. This indicates that to successfully simulate postcoldfrontal clouds, modeled physics must balance strong internal vertical mixing and weak exchange with the free troposphere. For this case study, cloud fraction was more sensitive to the choice of convection scheme than PBL scheme.

Entry Guidance Design and Post-Flight Performance of the Mars 2020 Mission

Like its predecessor Mars Science Laboratory, the Mars 2020 mission successfully utilized a derivative of the Apollo Entry Terminal Point Controller guidance algorithm, whereby bank angle controls range flown along a trajectory. The flight performance of this algorithm in conjunction with a range-trigger for parachute deploy delivered the Perseverance rover to 1.7 km from the expected touchdown location within an ellipse of 7.5 x 5.2 km. This miss distance is largely attributed to atmospheric and aerodynamic modeling uncertainties between the design and as-flown trajectory. This algorithm for guided entry continues to provide a solid basis for Mars missions to improve upon.

AGR-5/6/7 Post-Irradiation Examination Plan

This plan describes the PIE activities to be carried out on AGR-5/6/7 fuel and the non-fuel components of the AGR-5/6/7 irradiation test train. PIE of AGR-5/6/7 fuel and test train components will provide data on fuel performance over a range of irradiation conditions (e.g., burnup, neutron fluence, and temperature), test fuel under postulated accident conditions, and support development of fuel performance and fission product transport models. Examination of the non-fuel test train components will give information on TRISO fuel and compact performance and information on releases of radioactive fission products from the fuel compacts. PIE of the fuel compacts is used for many purposes including, but not limited to: updating the irradiation thermal calculations, measuring burnup, determining retention/release of fission products from the compacts and the TRISO particles, determining TRISO layer failure rates, determining fuel performance at elevated accident temperatures, determining fuel performance under oxidizing atmospheres, determining the distribution of fission products within the compact and fuel particles, and observing compact and particle morphology to explain mechanisms of TRISO layer failure and/or fission product release/retention.
