The BLAZE language: A parallel language for scientific programming

A Pascal-like scientific programming language, Blaze, is described. Blaze contains array arithmetic, forall loops, and APL-style accumulation operators, which allow natural expression of fine grained parallelism. It also employs an applicative or functional procedure invocation mechanism, which makes it easy for compilers to extract coarse grained parallelism using machine specific program restructuring. Thus Blaze should allow one to achieve highly parallel execution on multiprocessor architectures, while still providing the user with onceptually sequential control flow. A central goal in the design of Blaze is portability across a broad range of parallel architectures. The multiple levels of parallelism present in Blaze code, in principle, allow a compiler to extract the types of parallelism appropriate for the given architecture while neglecting the remainder. The features of Blaze are described and shows how this language would be used in typical scientific programming.

The use of superoxide mixtures as air-revitalization chemicals in hyperbaric, self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus

In portable breathing apparatus applications at 1 atm, potassium superoxide (KO2) has exhibited low-utilization efficiency of the available oxygen (O2) and diminished carbon dioxide-(CO2) scrubbing capacity caused by the formation of a fused, hydrated-hydroxide/carbonate product coating on the superoxide granules. In earlier work, it was discovered that granules fabricated from an intimate mixture of KO2 and calcium superoxide, Ca(O2)2, did not exhibit formation of a fused product coating and the utilization efficiency with respect to both O2 release and CO2 absorption was superior to KO2 granules when both types of granules were reacted with humidified CO2 under identified conditions. In the work described here, single pellets of KO2, KO2/Ca(O2), mixtures and commercially available KO2 tables and granules were reacted with a flow of humidified CO2 in helium at 1- and 10-atm total pressure and at an initial temperature of 40 C. In the 1-atm flow tests, the reaction rates and utilization efficiency of the KO2/Ca(O2)2 pellets were markedly superior to the KO2 pellets, tablets, and granules when the samples were reacted under identical conditions. However, at 10 atm, the rates of O2 release and CO2 absorption, as well as the utilization efficiencies of all the superoxide samples, were one-third to one-eighth of the values observed at 1 atm. The decrease in reaction performance at 10 atm compared to that at 1 atm has been attributed principally to the lower bulk diffusivity of the CO2 and H2O reactants in helium at the higher pressure and secondarily to the moderation of the reaction temperature caused by the higher heat capacity of the 10-atm helium.

Balloon-borne video cassette recorders for digital data storage

A high-speed, high-capacity digital data storage system has been developed for a new balloon-borne gamma-ray telescope. The system incorporates sophisticated, yet easy to use and economical consumer products: the portable video cassette recorder (VCR) and a relatively newer item - the digital audio processor. The in-flight recording system employs eight VCRs and will provide a continuous data storage rate of 1.4 megabits/sec throughout a 40 hour balloon flight. Data storage capacity is 25 gigabytes and power consumption is only 10 watts.

The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 by (1) Ceres

The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems.

Improved Oxygen Sources for Breathing Apparatus

Research is described which is directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen sources which exhibited improved O2 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(O2)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. the Ca(O2)2 was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(O2)2 syntheis process were studied. The reactivity of Ca(O2)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (CO2) was evaluated and was compared to that of KO2 under flow test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of KO2 and Ca(O2)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, KO2-based, self contained self rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(O2)2 or a mixture of KO2 and Ca(O2)2 were used as a replacement for KO2.

National transonic facility shakedown test results and calibration plans

The results of the shakedown tests and the calibration plan of the National Transonic Facility (NTF) are presented. The facility is designed to operate in both air and nitrogen modes, cover Mach numbers from 0.2 to 1.2, pressures up to 8.8 atm and temperatures between 77 and 339 K. The facility data system is built around four 16-bit minicomputers with a total memory of three megabytes. A portable cryogenic chamber is available. The tunnel systems were operated in a series of tests in Mach number range of 0.2 to 1.17, pressures up to 8.5 atm, and temperatures down to 100 K. The calibration plan includes steady-state and dynamic calibration, as well as wall interference studies. The facility underwent the checkout of the model attitude, plenum isolation, and model access systems, followed by aerodynamic calibration in 1984. Schematic drawings and diagrams are included.

Using Ada for a distributed, fault tolerant system

It is pointed out that advanced avionics applications increasingly require underlying machine architectures which are damage and fault tolerant, and which provide access to distributed sensors, effectors and high-throughput computational resources. The Advanced Information Processing System (AIPS), sponsored by NASA, is to provide an architecture which can meet the considered requirements. Ada was selected for implementing the AIPS system software. Advantages of Ada are related to its provisions for real-time programming, error detection, modularity and separate compilation, and standardization and portability. Chief drawbacks of this language are currently limited availability and maturity of language implementations, and limited experience in applying the language to real-time applications. The present investigation is concerned with current plans for employing Ada in the design of the software for AIPS. Attention is given to an overview of AIPS, AIPS software services, and representative design issues in each of four major software categories.

Dual Doppler lidar measurements of winds in the JAWS experiment

Differences are noted in the operations of Doppler lidar and radar for the case of a thunderstorm outflow observed during the Joint Airport Weather Studies project field experiments. Calculated wind fields agreed with surface wind observations made routinely by the Portable Automated Mesonet stations. The lidar data are found to complement Doppler radar observations; while the latter is superior for the measurement of wind fields within convective storms, the former is more useful in examinations of dynamical processes in regions outside storm.

Low-level microburst wind structure using Doppler radar and PAM data

The Joint Airport Weather Studies (JAWS) observation network used at an airport in Denver, CO consisted of one S-band and two C-band radars, together with 27 Portable Automated Mesonet (PAM) stations. Each of the three microburst case studies observed during the JAWS experiment occurred within the surface PAM network, and these surface data were compared with the radar analyses. It emerges that if microburst vertical motions are to be accurately resolved, the spacing of the surface stations must be considerably less than 4 km.

Changes in vegetation spectra with leaf deterioration under two methods of preservation

Changes in leaf spectra caused by mineralization under different conditions of preservation are measured using a three-band portable radiometer which simulates three Thematic Mapper bands 3, 4, and 5. Daily spectral measurements of white oak (Quercus alba) leaves did not distinguish among the fresh, bottled, and bagged vegetation in the spectral bands 3 and 5 for up to four days after collection. The reflected energy of the preserved vegetation increased thereafter, reportedly due to the loss of chlorophyll and dehydration. It is concluded that the measurement procedure is sufficiently sensitive as to discern documented patterns of variation in reflectance measurements.

Dual-Doppler lidar measurement of winds in the JAWS experiment

The use of coherent Doppler lidar measurements for analysis of wind fields near airports was investigated during the Joint Airport Weather Studies (JAWS) project of NASA and NOAA. Periodic lidar scans were made with two 10.6-micron CO2-pulsed Doppler lidars spaced 15 km apart in order to calculate the Cartesian wind fields near Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Analyses were also carried out for the flow behind gust fronts, with the desired flow fields corresponding both to surface winds measured by a Portable Automated Mesonet (PAM), and numerical models of Great Plains thunderstorm outflows. Comparison of low elevation scans carried out using the lidar instruments and a CP-4 Doppler radar showed distinct differences due to a bias toward weaker velocities in the radar measurements. The rms difference between the radar and the lidar measurements was 3.1 m/s. The experimental results were consistent with those of a previous study comparing Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) lidar with the CP-3 5.5-cm radar operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

A new instrument for the determination of radio path delay due to atmospheric water vapor

A new water-vapor radiometer is being developed to determine atmospheric path-delay corrections for geodynamics applications. The radiometer has microwave channels at 20.7, 22.2, and 31.4 GHz, and includes new features which should promote radiometric precision while at the same time reduce instrument complexity. The instrument will be compact, portable, and will possess a self-diagnostic capability to ensure reliability. The performance objective is the determination of the line-of-sight path delay through the atmosphere due to water vapor with a one-sigma error less than 0.5 cm at the zenith.
