Symbolic derivation of material property matrices in finite element analysis

The principles and operation of MMAX, a symbolic-computation program which automates the process of generating property matrices for structural materials, are briefly described and illustrated with sample analyses of a rubberlike material and an elastoplastic material. MMAX is written in LISP under the symbolic finite-element generator FINGER and the general symbolic manipulator MACSYMA; it first derives the formulas required by mathematical manipulation, and then translates the formulas into FORTRAN code, adapted to the particular type of machine to be used for the numerical calculations. This approach is shown to combine efficiently the advantages of symbolic and numerical computation for engineering applications.

Implementation and operation of three fractal measurement algorithms for analysis of remote-sensing data

Fractal geometry is increasingly becoming a useful tool for modeling natural phenomena. As an alternative to Euclidean concepts, fractals allow for a more accurate representation of the nature of complexity in natural boundaries and surfaces. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and implement three algorithms in C code for deriving fractal measurement from remotely sensed data. These three methods are: the line-divider method, the variogram method, and the triangular prism method. Remote-sensing data acquired by NASA's Calibrated Airborne Multispectral Scanner (CAMS) are used to compute the fractal dimension using each of the three methods. These data were obtained as a 30 m pixel spatial resolution over a portion of western Puerto Rico in January 1990. A description of the three methods, their implementation in PC-compatible environment, and some results of applying these algorithms to remotely sensed image data are presented.

The Empirical Analysis of Impact of Alliances on Airline Operations

Airline alliances are dominating the current air transport industry with the largest carriers of the world belonging to one of the four alliance groupings - "Wings", Star Alliance, one world, SkyTeam - which represent 56% of world Revenue Passenger Kilometers. Although much research has been carried out to evaluate the impact of alliance membership on performance of airlines, it would be of interest to ascertain the degree of impact perceived by participating airlines in alliances. It is the purpose of this paper to gather the opinion of all the airlines, belonging to the four global alliance groupings on the impact alliances have had on their traffic and on their performance in general To achieve this, a comprehensive survey of the alliance management departments of airlines participating in the four global strategic alliances was carried out. With this framework the survey has examined which type of cooperation among carriers (FFP, Code Share, Strategic Alliance without antitrust immunity, Strategic Alliance with antitrust immunity) has produced the most positive impact on traffic and which type of route (short haul, long haul, hub-hub, hub-non hub, non hub-non hub) has been mostly affected. In addition, the respondent airlines quantified the effect alliances have had on specific areas of their operation, such as load factors, traffic, costs, revenue and fares. Their responses have been analysed under each global alliances grouping, under airline and under geographic region to establish which group, type of carrier and geographic region has benefited most. The results show that each of the four global alliances groupings has experienced different results according to the type of collaboration agreed amongst their member airlines.

An Analysis of the Impact of Extreme Attitude Operation on a Turbofan Engine in a Regional Jet Aircraft

The objective of this work is to characterize the variability in engine performance at extreme attitudes, resulting from the use of different standard control variables, evaluated at different points in the engine’s lifecycle. This paper describes the procedure used to create a dynamic model of an aft-mounted jet engine on a T-tail regional jet aircraft. This model enables simulation of engine operation at extreme attitudes. The model was subsequently evaluated at various altitudes, Mach numbers, and power settings over a range of angles of attack and sideslip, and deterioration levels. Each case was simulated using both fan speed and engine pressure ratio as the engine control variable. The results show that the wing has a very large impact on the engine operation, overwhelming other sources of variation.

Using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Enhance Mission Design and Operations of the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)

One key aspect in the development of HWO is the early deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enhance mission science and operations. Our subtask group is part of the HWO AI/ML working group and focuses on AI and ML for mission operations. Our task group seeks to educate other HWO working groups about AI and ML capabilities for mission operations, investigate how to bridge technology gaps, and enable new capabilities particularly in the areas of observational scheduling, instrument health monitoring, and downlink operations. We focus on mission tasking / scheduling both for mission analysis in development and operations. AI and ML for mission scheduling includes: tools to support proposal calls and review, ensuring fairness in calls for proposals, community peer reviews and ease workloads, as well as in-flight and ground software development (e.g., using natural language processing (NLP) to support process automation from requirements). AI and ML for the mission’s development and operations include 1) anomaly detection and prediction (from onboard and ground based tools) to monitor the spacecraft’s health, 2) ground-based automated scheduling for mission operations including long-term and short-term planning and maintenance, and 3) flight system flexible execution (as flight proven for Spitzer and JWST) to enable robust execution despite execution variations, and 4) data analysis for prioritization (e.g., real-time data evaluation leading to autonomous actions and adjustments, high-priority identification, onboard data compression, etc.). Incorporation of ML and AI will enable HWO to address the major science questions related to exoplanet characterization, general astrophysics, and solar system exploration and also extend the boundaries of space mission technologies.

Analysis of Interactions Between Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Operations and Conventional Traffic in Urban Areas: Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) Study for UAM Operations

This paper presents results on potential interaction effects from UAM (Urban Air Mobility) operations integrated into current operational scenarios by evaluating if/where/how Traffic alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) alerts are triggered on-board commercial aircraft. A range of operational scenarios are evaluated with combinations of UAM vehicle route, speed, altitude, and direction along the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) "spine route." The effect of UAM altitude uncertainty on the above is also explored. The analysis was done for both South flow and North flow configurations of DFW. When UAM operations are deterministic, no TCAS RAs (Resolution Advisories) are issued. However, UAM altitude uncertainties point out geographic areas of concern with the associated severity of interactions.

Information Fusion and Data Analytics for Human Lunar Exploration (CIF REPORT: Detailed PI Write-up)

The Information Fusion & Data Analytics (IFDA) project commenced in FY20, continued through FY21, and its final platform development phase continues in FY22. The objective remains the fusion and rapid accessibility of large quantities of disparate sourced human spaceflight data. IFDA is a platform tailored for NA (S&MA) to develop highly advanced operational data integration and analysis techniques. IFDA leverages the JSC ER7 modeling, simulation, and data fusion capabilities to collect, warehouse, and augment data human exploration data integration and analysis techniques. The IFDA project’s integrated data visualizations have been demonstrated in two validation scenarios in FY21, and provided the architecture and platform basis for development of a full-scale data analysis suite and storage solution useful to all JSC organizations engaged in real time operations and safety tasks. Scenarioand prototypical development including the construction of a full scale data analysis suite and storage solution, useful to all JSC organizations engaged in real time operations and safety tasks, is central to IFDA Phase 3 and provides a demonstrable pathway for the Digital Transformation Program. IFDA Phase 3 is focused on data provider, data utilizer, and SME hands-on workshops that will conclude the Dem / Valphase and deliver a program-ready data integration tool as a product.
