Results are presented from a high-altitude balloon flight in September 1972 near 3-GV geomagnetic cutoff. The detector is a combination of ionization chambers and a Lucite Cerenkov counter with a charge resolution of 0.34 charge units. Following the technique described by Lund et al. (1971), use is made of the geomagnetic rigidity cutoff and measured momentum-per-nucleon spectra of individual elements to determine values of A/Z for even Z elements of 16 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 26 relative to A/Z of silicon.
Determination of the properties of the system transfer function of the vertical-velocity propeller anemometer. A treatment of this problem is presented which is based on an analysis of estimates of the system transfer function derived from estimates of spectra calculated from time histories of indicated vertical velocity and on estimates of the associated input Eulerian vertical-velocity frequency spectra based on the hypothesis that instrument degradation of the Fourier components occurs in the inertial subrange.
Range measurements to the Pioneer 10 and Mariner 10 spacecraft were made, without the use of a ranging system per se, by using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Deep Space Network's new digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) device. These measurements were accomplished by controlling the linear ramps of the transmitted carrier frequency with a recently installed DCO instrument at the Goldstone facility and analyzing the received linearly ramped Doppler data with a computer program. The accuracy of these range measurements is on the order of 1.5 km.
Starting from a quasi-linear approximation for the ensemble-averaged particle distribution function in a random magnetic field, the complete diffusion tensor is derived. This is done by assuming a simple form for the ensemble-averaged distribution function, explicitly retaining all components of the streaming flux. This derivation obtains the antisymmetric terms in a natural manner. The necessary dropping of higher-order terms gives a criterion for the lower-energy limit of validity of the perpendicular and antisymmetric diffusion coefficients. The limit for the assumed distribution function is about 0.8 GV rigidity in the interplanetary field near 1 AU.

A methodology for the display and analysis of postulated energy futures for the United States is presented. A systems approach that includes the methodology of technology assessment is used to examine three energy scenarios--the Westinghouse Nuclear Electric Economy, the Ford Technical Fix Base Case and a MEGASTAR generated Alternate to the Ford Technical Fix Base Case. The three scenarios represent different paths of energy consumption for the present to the year 2000. Associated with these paths are various mixes of fuels, conversion, distribution, conservation and end-use technologies. MEGASTAR presents the estimated times and unit requirements to supply the fuels, conversion and distribution systems for the postulated end uses for the three scenarios and then estimates the aggregate manpower, materials, and capital requirements needed to develop the energy system described by the particular scenario. The total requirements and the energy subsystems for each scenario are assessed for their primary impacts in the areas of society, the environment, technology and the economy.
A computerized acoustic attenuation prediction procedure has been developed to evaluate acoustically lined ducts for various geometric and environmental parameters. The analysis procedure is based on solutions to the acoustic wave equation, assuming uniform airflow on a duct cross section, combined with appropriate mathematical lining impedance models. The impedance models included in the analysis procedure are representative of either perforated sheet or porous polyimide impregnated fiberglass facing sheet coupled with a cellular backing space. Advantages and limitations of the analysis procedure are reviewed.

A transducer and frequency discriminator circuit is described including a four-terminal circulating diode bridge, a first pair of capacitors connected in series across two terminals of the bridge, and a second pair of capacitors, or other impedance elements, connected in series across the other two terminals of the bridge. A source of balanced alternating electrical energy for energizing the circuit is coupled between the commonly connected plates of the first pair of capacitors and the commonly connected plates of the second pair of capacitors. Due to the operation of the diode bridge, the sum of the resultant charges developed on the first pair of capacitors is proportional to the relationship between the respective capacitors of the second pair, and consequently, an output voltage taken across the first pair of capacitors will be proportional to that relationship.
An analysis of the aircraft microwave data obtained during the AIDJEX pilot experiment is presented and compared with a recent analysis of the microwave brightness temperatures measured in situ in the vicinity of the n main AIDJEX camp. The sea ice is divided into five distinct zones, the properties of each are discussed in detail.

Methods of prophylaxis for disorders caused predominantly by reduction or absence of hydrostatic blood pressure in weightlessness and in experimental stimulation of it (readjustment of the watersalt metabolism, relative dehydration, disruption of competence of the cardiovascular system with respect to orthostatic loads, etc.), are adequately substantiated. Two theoretically possible approaches to prophylaxis of this type of disorder are examined: The use of methods of simulation of the effect of hydrostatic blood pressure in flight and the decrease in the gravitational redistribution of blood to the lower part of the body in the postflight period. In particular, the method of negative pressure in the lower region of the body gave favorable results. A significant decrease in orthostatic disorders after completion of such experiments was achieved by use of g-suits or other types of special clothing.
A flow visualization study showed that strong Karman vortices are developed behind the blunt trailing edge of a plate when the free stream velocities over both surfaces are equal. These vortices tend to disappear when the surface velocities are unequal. This observation provided an explanation for the occurrence and disappearance of the lip noise often present in coaxial jets. Vortex formation and lip noise occurred at a Strouhal number of about 0.2 based on the lip thickness and the average of the external steady-state velocities. Results from theoretical calculations of the vortex formation, based on an inviscid, incompressible analysis of the motion of point vortices, were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
The diurnal component in meridional wind was observed for each season at twelve rocket stations. Amplitudes and phases are presented as a function of height-latitude or as vertical profiles. Many of the gross features of the tide persist throughout the year, but as they migrate in height and latitude the amplitude or phase at a given location may undergo large changes with season. Longitudinal variations in the diurnal tide are found in the mid-stratosphere, and it is suggested they are coupled with longitudinal variations in the tropospheric temperature structure.
A comparison of the hydrogen and cesium hyperfine frequencies is made using a hydrogen maser calibrated directly against the Flexible Bulb Large Storage Box Hydrogen Maser and a Hewlett-Packard portable high performance cesium clock calibrated indirectly against the USNO Master Clock via a Loran-C link. The portable cesium clock is transported from the USNO to Harvard University in operating condition. This allows the evaluation of the portable clock's performance under transport. Data are presented on the epoch and frequency stability of the portable clock under transport as well as the usefulness of a closure measurement in determining clock drift.
