Stable hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of extractable hydrocarbons in the Murchison meteorite

A fairly fool-proof method to ensure that the compounds isolated from meteorites are truly part of the meteorites and not an artifact introduced by exposure to the terrestrial environment, storage, or handling is presented. The stable carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios in several of the chemical compounds extracted from the Murchison meteorite were measured. The results obtained by studying the amino acids in this meteorite gave very unusual hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios. The technique was extended to the different classes of hydrocarbons and the hydrocarbons were isolated using a variety of separation techniques. The results and methods used in this investigation are described in this two page paper.

Extraction of volatiles and metals from extraterrestrial ores

Extraterrestrial materials, processes, and products were identified which are associated with the production of propellants in space, including the most complete possible conversion of the feedstocks for propellant production into useful products with the minimum feasible expenditure of energy. Laboratory research was identified and begun on several processes that promise very large increases in the mass of useful products at the cost of only modest increases in energy consumption. Processes for manufacturing propellants then become processes for making propellants plus metals and refractories. It is the overall yield of useful materials per unit expended energy that matters, not simply the yield of propellants. Three tasks have been undertaken to date: (1) Literature search and compilation of a dBase 3 data base on space materials processing; (2) Gaseous carbonyl extraction and purification of ferrous metals; and (3) Characterization of lunar ilmenite and its simulants.

H2 extraction and H2O and O2 production from lunar soil

Direct extraction and reaction of the 50 ppm H found in mature lunar soil with a small fraction of the 1 percent ilmenite found in even the most Ti-poor lunar soils is a viable method of producing H2O2 and H2O for propellants and life support. A plant with a mass of approximately 62 metric tons can produce about 8 metric tons of LOX and 1.2 metric tons of LH2 per month. The concept is viable in even Ti-poor regions if the soils have long exposure to solar wind. The plant processes over 29,000 tons of soil with about 50 ppm H per month. The mine that feeds the plant excavates over 8600 sq m per month with a fleet of three front-end loaders and five haulers. Trade studies demonstrate that nuclear power accompanied by a high process plant duty cycle results in a far smaller installation than a solar-powered unit.

Frequency domain mechanism extraction

A time-domain analysis is applied to a frequency-domain technique which recovers the individual frequency characteristics of localized scattering mechanisms from a composite signature with two scattering mechanisms. This technique constructs a matrix which has filter characteristics with similar properties to a physically realizable filter based upon convolution concepts. This similarity is expanded to evaluate the rows of the matrix as filters, as demonstrated in the time domain to provide an alternate interpretation of the extraction process.

Assembly planning based on subassembly extraction

A method is presented for the automatic determination of assembly partial orders from a liaison graph representation of an assembly through the extraction of preferred subassemblies. In particular, the authors show how to select a set of tentative subassemblies by decomposing a liaison graph into a set of subgraphs based on feasibility and difficulty of disassembly, how to evaluate each of the tentative subassemblies in terms of assembly cost using the subassembly selection indices, and how to construct a hierarchical partial order graph (HPOG) as an assembly plan. The method provides an approach to assembly planning by identifying spatial parallelism in assembly as a means of constructing temporal relationships among assembly operations and solves the problem of finding a cost-effective assembly plan in a flexible environment. A case study of the assembly planning of a mechanical assembly is presented.

Statistical Approach To Extraction Of Texture In SAR

Improved statistical method of extraction of textural features in synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) images takes account of effects of scheme used to sample raw SAR data, system noise, resolution of radar equipment, and speckle. Treatment of speckle incorporated into overall statistical treatment of speckle, system noise, and natural variations in texture. One computes speckle auto-correlation function from system transfer function that expresses effect of radar aperature and incorporates range and azimuth resolutions.

Constitutive parameter extraction for heated materials

The focus is the determination of the electrical constitutive paramaters of materials with general complex epsilon and mu values at elevated temperatures. Measurement fixtures and techniques are evaluated for frequencies between 8 and 12 GHz using a rectangular waveguide with the sample completely filling the fixture. Three different measurement techniques are evaluated to obtain the necessary measured quantities for parameter extraction. The most desirable technique used two reflection measurements from material samples of different thickness backed with a short. Temperatures up to 600 F were investigated.

Optimal extraction of quasar Lyman limit absorption systems from the IUE archive

The IUE archive contains a wealth of information on Lyman limit absorption systems (LLS) in quasar spectra. QSO spectra from the IUE data base were optimally extracted, coadded, and analyzed to yield a homogeneous samples of LLS at low red shifts. This sample comprise 36 LLS, twice the number previously analyzed low z samples. These systems are ideal for the determination of the origin, redshift evolution, ionization, velocity dispersions and the metal abundances of absorption systems. Two of them are also excellent targets for the primordial Deuterium to Hydrogen ratio.

Extracting fuzzy rules under uncertainty and measuring definability using rough sets

Although computers have come a long way since their invention, they are basically able to handle only crisp values at the hardware level. Unfortunately, the world we live in consists of problems which fail to fall into this category, i.e., uncertainty is all too common. A problem is looked at which involves uncertainty. To be specific, attributes are dealt with which are fuzzy sets. Under this condition, knowledge is acquired by looking at examples. In each example, a condition as well as a decision is made available. Based on the examples given, two sets of rules are extracted, certain and possible. Furthermore, measures are constructed of how much these rules are believed in, and finally, the decisions are defined as a function of the terms used in the conditions.

Measuring uncertainty by extracting fuzzy rules using rough sets

Despite the advancements in the computer industry in the past 30 years, there is still one major deficiency. Computers are not designed to handle terms where uncertainty is present. To deal with uncertainty, techniques other than classical logic must be developed. The methods are examined of statistical analysis, the Dempster-Shafer theory, rough set theory, and fuzzy set theory to solve this problem. The fundamentals of these theories are combined to possibly provide the optimal solution. By incorporating principles from these theories, a decision making process may be simulated by extracting two sets of fuzzy rules: certain rules and possible rules. From these rules a corresponding measure of how much these rules is believed is constructed. From this, the idea of how much a fuzzy diagnosis is definable in terms of a set of fuzzy attributes is studied.

DecisionMaker software and extracting fuzzy rules under uncertainty

Knowledge acquisition under uncertainty is examined. Theories proposed in deKorvin's paper 'Extracting Fuzzy Rules Under Uncertainty and Measuring Definability Using Rough Sets' are discussed as they relate to rule calculation algorithms. A data structure for holding an arbitrary number of data fields is described. Limitations of Pascal for loops in the generation of combinations are also discussed. Finally, recursive algorithms for generating all possible combination of attributes and for calculating the intersection of an arbitrary number of fuzzy sets are presented.

Efficient energy extraction from a diode-pumped Q-switched Tm,Ho:YLiF4 laser

The operation of a diode-laser pumped thulium, holmium yttrium-lithium-fluoride laser (Tm,Ho:YLF) in Q-switched mode is reported. Output energies of 200 microjoules in pulses of 22 ns duration are recorded at Q-switch frequencies commensurate with an effective upper laser level lifetime of 6 ms. This lifetime is appreciably longer than that observed in other hosts permitting stored energy extraction of 64 percent, close to the projected maximum performance from these materials.

Extracting spectral albedo from NOAA-9 AVHRR multiple view data using an atmospheric correction procedure and an expert system

A 100 km by 200 km area of the Sahel was selected to demonstrate a new method of extracting hemispherical reflectance (albedo) from directional satellite data. Utilizing a stratification of the Gao region of Mali based on soil texture, satellite data for homogeneous areas were selected. These data were employed in a knowledge-based expert system called VEG, which is designed to handle a wide variety of types of input data. The calculated directional reflectance factors at ground level are very similar to ground measurements noted in the literature.

Extraction of volatiles and metals from extraterrestrial materials

Recent progress in defining the physical, orbital, and chemical properties of the Earth-crossing asteroid and comet population was integrated into an elaborate Monte Carlo model of the fluxes of bodies in the inner Solar System. This model is of use in projecting flight opportunities to as-yet undiscovered near-Earth objects and in assessing the impact hazard to life on Earth and the evolutionary consequences of impacts on the other terrestrial planets. Further progress was made in defining desirable transportation system architectures for the use of non-terrestrial volatiles and metals, including the delivery of propellants to near-Earth space for fueling of space exploration initiative (SEI) type expeditions, the construction and resupply of Solar Power Satellite constellations in various Earth orbits (including geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) and Highly Eccentric Earth Orbit (HEEO)), and retrieval of He-3 for use as a clean fusion fuel on Earth. These studies suggest a greater future role for SERC in the exploration of space energy sources to meet Earth's 21st-century energy requirements. Laboratory studies of volatilization and deposition of ferrous metal alloys demonstrated deposition of strong iron films from carbonyl chemical vapor deposition (CVD), showing the crucial role of additive gases in governing the CVD process, and pointing the way to specific experiments on extraction and deposition of ferrous metals from nonterrestrial materials.

Effect of DCB extraction on Mossbauer and spectral data for a Hawaiian palagonitic soil (PN-9): Iden tification of pigmentary phases

The study of palagonitic soils is an active area of research in martian geoscience because the spectral and magnetic properties of a subset are spectral and/or magnetic analogues of martian bright regions. An understanding of the composition, distribution, and mineralogy of ferric-bearing phases for palagonitic soils forms, through spectral and magnetic data, a basis for inferring the nature of ferric-bearing phases on Mars. Progress has been made in this area, but the data set is incomplete, especially with respect to the nature of pigmenting phases. The purpose of this study is to identify the nature of the pigment for Hawaiian palagonitic soil PN-9 by using extraction procedures to selectively remove iron oxide phases. This soil was collected at the same locale as samples Hawaii 34 and VOL02. All three soils are good spectral analogues for martian bright regions.

A comparison of techniques for extracting emissivity information from thermal infrared data for geologic studies

This article evaluates three techniques developed to extract emissivity information from multispectral thermal infrared data. The techniques are the assumed Channel 6 emittance model, thermal log residuals, and alpha residuals. These techniques were applied to calibrated, atmospherically corrected thermal infrared multispectral scanner (TIMS) data acquired over Cuprite, Nevada in September 1990. Results indicate that the two new techniques (thermal log residuals and alpha residuals) provide two distinct advantages over the assumed Channel 6 emittance model. First, they permit emissivity information to be derived from all six TIMS channels. The assumed Channel 6 emittance model only permits emissivity values to be derived from five of the six TIMS channels. Second, both techniques are less susceptible to noise than the assumed Channel 6 emittance model. The disadvantage of both techniques is that laboratory data must be converted to thermal log residuals or alpha residuals to facilitate comparison with similarly processed image data. An additional advantage of the alpha residual technique is that the processed data are scene-independent unlike those obtained with the other techniques.

A histogram-based technique for rapid vector extraction from PIV photographs

A new analysis technique, performed totally in the image plane, is proposed which rapidly extracts all available vectors from individual interrogation regions on PIV photographs. The technique avoids the need for using Fourier transforms with the associated computational burden. The data acquisition and analysis procedure is described, and results of a preliminary simulation study to evaluate the accuracy of the technique are presented. Recently obtained PIV photographs are analyzed.
