Including complementarity constraints in energy storage system (ESS) models in optimization problems ensure an optimal solution will not produce a physically unrealizable control strategy where there is simultaneous charging and discharging. However, the current approaches to impose complementarity constraints require the use of non-convex optimization methods. Here, we propose a convex relaxation for a common ESS model that has terms for both charging and discharging based on a penalty reformulation for use in a model predictive control (MPC) based optimal power flow (DC OPF) problem. In this approach, the complementarity constraints are omitted and a penalty term is added to the optimization objective function. For the DC OPF problem, we provide analysis for the conditions under which the convex relaxation of the complementarity constraint ensures that a solution with simultaneous ESS charging and discharging operation is suboptimal. Simulation results demonstrating ESS behavior with and without the penalty reformulation are provided for an MPC-based DC OPF problem on multiple IEEE test systems.

In spite of the high energy efficiency and environmental benefits of electric vehicles (EVs), adoption rates are increasing at a relatively slow pace, primarily because of EVs’ limited range and long charging durations. To reduce EV charging times to be comparable to refueling times of conventional vehicles, extreme fast charging systems are required. Such charging systems would reduce drivers’ range anxiety and enable long-distance interstate travel with EVs. Here, this substantial target in charging rates with 15–20 minutes of recharging times, requires research and development from grid to batteries with advanced charging systems. Wireless power transfer systems for EV charging applications are flexible, convenient, and highly efficient, and they allow automated charging. This paper reviews the power electronics and winding and resonant tuning network configurations for polyphase wireless power transfer systems for high-power wireless charging applications.

In the paper, we respond to Baveye and colleagues' recent critique of our PROMISE model, describing how this new framework significantly advances our understanding of soil spatial heterogeneity and its influence on organic matter transformations.
Mid-latitude Northern Hemisphere extreme cold events continue to occur despite overall winter warming trends. These events have been linked to weakened stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) states. In this study, we analyze both the upper and lower polar stratosphere for links to extreme winter cold and snow in the continental US, finding two SPV variations of interest. The first features an upper-level vortex displaced toward western Canada and linked to northwestern US severe winter weather. The second features a weakened upper-level vortex displaced toward the North Atlantic and linked to central-eastern US severe winter weather. Both variations feature lower-level stretched vortices and stratospheric wave reflection. Since 2015, a northwestward shift in severe winter weather across the US is concurrent with an increase in the frequency of the westward-focused variation relative to the eastward-focused variation and a shift to more negative phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation.

Silicon is a promising alternative anode material to graphite because of its high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities. However, severe capacity fading is observed in Si electrodes, and it is a result of mechanical changes of Si, such as volume changes, stress or fracture. Furthermore, these mechanical behaviors are strongly coupled with the electrochemistry of the Li-Si alloying reaction in Si-based electrodes, including both thermodynamics and kinetics. Therefore, the electrochemical properties of Si-based electrodes are strongly dependent on the control of the mechanics of Si during lithiation/delithiation. As such, it is very important to understand the correlation between electrochemistry and mechanics. Here, we review lithiation/delithiation behaviors of various types of Si-based electrodes, applying a fundamental understanding of electrochemistry and mechanics and the correlation between them.

CloudSat’s Cloud Profiling Radar is a valuable tool for remotely monitoring high-latitude snowfall, but its ability to observe hydrometeor activity near the Earth’s surface is limited by a radar blind zone caused by ground clutter contamination. This study presents the development of a deeply supervised U-Net-style convolutional neural network to predict cold season reflectivity profiles within the blind zone at two Arctic locations. The network learns to predict the presence and intensity of near-surface hydrometeors by coupling latent features encoded in blind zone-aloft clouds with additional context from collocated atmospheric state variables (i.e., temperature, specific humidity, and wind speed). Results show that the U-Net predictions outperform traditional linear extrapolation methods, with low mean absolute error, a 38% higher Sørensen–Dice coefficient, and vertical reflectivity distributions 60% closer to observed values. The U-Net is also able to detect the presence of near-surface cloud with a critical success index (CSI) of 72% and cases of shallow cumuliform snowfall and virga with 18% higher CSI values compared to linear methods. An explainability analysis shows that reflectivity information throughout the scene, especially at cloud edges and at the 1.2-km blind zone threshold, along with atmospheric state variables near the tropopause, are the most significant contributors to model skill. This surface-trained generative inpainting technique has the potential to enhance current and future remote sensing precipitation missions by providing a better understanding of the nonlinear relationship between blind zone reflectivity values and the surrounding atmospheric state.
