Materials processing in space; Proceedings of the Special Conference, Cincinnati, OH, May 4, 5, 1982

An international review of materials processing in space is provided, taking into account the NASA materials processing in space program, European activities in the field of microgravity research, and Japanese material processing tests in space. The subjects considered are related to materials processing in a microgravity environment, industrial and university applications and involvement, and challenges and prospectives of microgravity research in space. Attention is given to a review of the containerless processing technologies and facilities, glass research in space, bubble behavior in molten glass in a temperature gradient, semiconductor crystal growth and segregation problems on earth and space, seeded crystal growth of pseudobinary systems with large liquidus-solidus separation, avenues and incentives for commercial use of a low-gravity environment, and the Universities Space Research Association and its role in the materials processing in space program.

Magnetospheric currents; Chapman Conference, Irvington, VA, April 5-8, 1983, Selected Papers

A description is presented of theory and models, taking into account magnetospheric dynamo processes, magnetospheric topology of fields and currents, a new theory of sources of Birkeland currents, dielectric and permeability effects in collisionless plasmas, field-aligned current sheets as tangential and rotational discontinuities, electrodynamics of convection in the inner magnetosphere, coupling of Birkeland current rings, region one Birkeland currents connecting to sunward convecting flux tubes, and corrected geomagnetic coordinates for epoch 1980. Other topics explored are related to early history, an introduction to magnetospheric currents, surface observations, near-space observations, distant space observations, ionospheric effects, plasma instabilities, and current systems in other magnetospheres. Attention is given to the dynamics of field-aligned current sources at earth and Jupiter, fundamentals of current description, polar cap current systems, electric fields and currents associated with active aurora, and the role of currents in plasma redistribution.

Spacecraft contamination: Sources and prevention; Thermophysics Conference, 18th, Montreal, Canada, June 1-3, 1983, Selected Papers

Results of current research in the field of spacecraft contamination are presented. An overview of the various sources of contamination is given, showing the many and diverse mechanisms associated with the degradation of thermal and optical performance of spacecraft surfaces and optics. Some of the causes of contamination are discussed, including spallation of foam insulation on cryogenic fuel tanks, dispersion of particle contamination about a spacecraft, particle contamination of optical sensors, and the influence of the location of venting systems. Contamination prevention is addressed. Infrared transmittance and infrared optical properties of contaminants are considered along with the effects and properties of mixtures of exhaust species, of plume boundary layer flow, and of the contamination associated with bipropellant attitude control thrusters proposed for the Galileo spacecraft. Also discussed are: degradation of 'clean' thermal control surfaces over four years in orbit, in-orbit measurement of solar absorptance, and contamination from postfire efflux of a solid-propellant rocket motor.

Combustion diagnostics by nonintrusive methods; Thermophysics Conference, 18th, Montreal, Canada, June 1-3, 1983, Selected Papers

The state of the art in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is outlined, and current diagnostic capabilities in particle and combustion diagnostics are demonstrated. The development and application of CARS to combustion systems is discussed, and the use of LIF for flow diagnostics is addressed. Nonintrusive particle diagnostics is treated, and a variety of nonintrusive techniques applied to combustion environments is considered.

Contributions to the 19th International Cosmic Ray Conference

Studies of heavy nuclei in cosmic radiation were studied in an attempt to determine source abundances for various elements. Much of the data analyzed was supplied by the High Energy Astronomy Observatory 3 (HEAO 3) and employed the use of ionization chambers and Cherenrov counters.
