The Cosmic Dust Collection Facility on Space Station Freedom

The Cosmic Dust Collection Facility is an attached payload on board the Freedom Station that will serve as a long-term observatory of all dust-sized particles, typically of much less than 1 mm, either natural or man-made. Its instruments will measure the trajectories of individual hypervelocity particles and will trap the fragmented, melted or vaporized impactor residues in suitable capture media. The latter will be periodically returned to earth for detailed mineralogic and chemical characterization of these residues. The trajectory information will permit reconstruction of the astrophysical source(s) of natural dust grains, such that the compositional information may serve as proxy-analysis of primitive solar system objects among which comets and asteroids are known to be the most prolific dust sources. Trajectory information and chemical composition of man-made particles will yield clues about the most prolific anthropogenic sources. Direct measurement of the dynamic properties of all particles will contribute substantially toward an understanding of the collisional hazards to current and future space operations in LEO.

Measurement of isotopic abundances in collected stratospheric ozone samples

Enrichment of heavy O3 isotopes has been measured in collected stratospheric samples. A balloon-borne cryogenic sampler was used to gather six O3 samples between 26 and 35 km in three flights. Subsequent laboratory mass spectrometer analysis of rare O3 isotopes at both mass 49 and 50 has resulted in more precise measurements than have previously been reported with in situ and ground-based techniques. In one flight, (O-50)3 was enriched by 12-16 percent and (O-49)3 by 9-11 percent, both increasing with altitude. In the remaining two flights, the isotope enrichment was nearly mass-independent at 8-9 percent. The enrichments in O3 at mass 50 are less than the large 40 percent value observed in some stratospheric measurements but similar to (O-49)3 and (O-50)3 fractionations produced in laboratory-generated ozone.

Visualizing characteristics of ocean data collected during the Shuttle Imaging Radar-B experiment

Topographic measurements of sea surface elevation collected by the Surface Contour Radar (SCR) during NASA's Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment are plotted as three dimensional surface plots to observe wave height variance along the track of a P-3 aircraft. Ocean wave spectra were computed from rotating altimeter measurements acquired by the Radar Ocean Wave Spectrometer (ROWS). Fourier power spectra computed from SIR-B synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the ocean are compared to ROWS surface wave spectra. Fourier inversion of SAR spectra, after subtraction of spectral noise and modeling of wave height modulation, yields topography similar to direct measurements made by SCR. Visual perspectives on the SCR and SAR ocean data are compared. Threshold distinctions between surface elevation and texture modulations of SAR data are considered within the context of a dynamic statistical model of rough surface scattering. The result of these endeavors is insight as to the physical mechanism governing the imaging of ocean waves with SAR.

Physical processes associated with current collection by plasma contactors

Recent flight data confirms laboratory observations that the release of neutral gas increases plasma sheath currents. Plasma contactors are devices which release a partially ionized gas in order to enhance the current flow between a spacecraft and the space plasma. Ionization of the expellant gas and the formation of a double layer between the anode plasma and the space plasma are the dominant physical processes. A theory is presented of the interaction between the contactor plasma and the background plasma. The conditions for formation of a double layer between the two plasmas are derived. Double layer formation is shown to be a consequence of the nonlinear response of the plasmas to changes in potential. Numerical calculations based upon this model are compared with laboratory measurements of current collection by hollow cathode-based plasma contactors.

Proposal for a conceptually new compact collecting optics for powerful light sources

Testing of a spacecraft under simulated outer space conditions is the best guarantee for a successful mission, and for almost all of the parameters a good match (to within a few percent) may be reached in relevant test facilities (e.g., IR background, earthshine and albedo radiation, residual atmosphere, intensity stability, distribution and spectrum of the solar radiation). The collimation angle of the sun (32 arc min) is, however, a drastic exception, here only + or - 1.5 to 2 deg are achieved which means a relative deviation by nearly one order of magnitude. The main reason for this is the presently used collecting optics having unnecessary large diameters. Here a lens-mirror combination is proposed which allows the reduction of the diameter by nearly a factor of two and to achieve with the present Xenon arc lamps a collimation angle of + or - 0.8 deg.

Dust particles from comets and asteroids collected at the Earth's orbit: Parent-daughter relationships

The relative contributions of comets and asteroids to the reservoir of dust in the interplanetary medium is not well known. There are direct observations of dust released from comets and there is evidence to associate the IRAS dust bands with possible collisions of Asteroids in the main belt. It is believed that one may combine lab analysis of the physics and chemistry of captured particles with orbital data in order to identify comet and asteroid parent bodies. It is possible to use the collected orbits of the dust to connect with its source in two ways. One is to consider the long time orbit evolution of the dust under Poynting-Robertson drag. The other is to look at the prompt orbit change of dust from comets onto trajectories that intersect the earth's orbit. In order to characterize the orbits of dust particles evolved over a long period of time, a study of its orbital evolution was undertaken. Various parameters associated with these dust orbits as they cross the Earth's orbit were considered in order to see if one may discriminate between particles evolved from comets and asteroids. The method was to calculate by a numerical procedure the orbits of dust particles after they left their parent bodies. It appears that as the particles pass the Earth's orbit, asteroidal grains and cometary grains can be differentiated on the basis of their measured orbital eccentricities even after much planetary perturbation. Broad parent daughter associations can be made on this basis from measurement of their trajectories intercepted in earth orbit.

Collection of microparticles at high balloon altitudes in the stratosphere

Stratospheric particles were collected between 34 and 36 km, using a combination of cascade impactors and filters lofted by a large helium balloon, and the particle concentration, size distribution, and bulk elemental composition were determined using SEM and proton-induced X-ray emission (PEXE) instrument. In addition, datailed particle morphology, elemental analysis, and electron diffraction data were obtained on 23 particles using a TEM. The concentration of particles between 0.045 and 1.0 micron in radius was found to be orders of magnitude above the concentrations predicted by the model of Hunten et al. (1980), but was consistent with balloon and satellite observations. Elemental composition analysis showed the presence of Cl, S, Ti, Fe, Br, Ni, Zr, Zn, Sr, and Cu in decreasing order of concentration. The 23 particles analyzed by TEM ranged from Al-rich silicates to almost pure Fe to one containing almost exclusively Ba and S. None were definitely chondritic in composition.

A theoretical model of current collection

Numerical simulations were carried out on the high-bias voltage on the conducting satellite for the current collection. Results show that the particle trajectories are dependent on the geomagnetic field orientation and the biased potential on both the satellite and the instrument's detector. It is noted that these particles will not escape from the plasma sheath when the B field is perpendicular to the satellite surface plane. It is also shown that part of the satellite surface will be shielded if the perpendicular magnetic field is greater than 0.35 gauss.

Ablation of silicate particles in high-speed continuum and transition flow with application to the collection of interplanetary dust particles

The ablative deceleration of spheres in the continuum and slip regimes is studied using spherical 7.1-micron-diam soda-lime glass particles launched from vacuum at about 4500 m/sec speed through a 13-micron-thick plastic film into a capture chamber containing Xe at 0.1 or 0.2 atm pressure and 295 K temperature. The results of SEM examinations of the collected ablated particles showed that the ratio of the ablated-particle radius (Rf) to the initial radius (R0) increased with gas pressure (from Rf/R0 about 0.67 at 0.1 atm, to about 0.88 at 0.2 atm). A model was developed to describe the ablation and deceleration of spheres in high-speed continuum and slip flow. The pressure dependence predicted by the model agreed with experimental results.

Analysis of volatiles present in interplanetary dust and stratospheric particles collected on large area collectors

Results are presented from an analysis of six chondritic interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) and 22 other stratospheric particles collected on large-area collector, carried out in order to obtain information on the nature, distribution, and form of volatiles in IDPs. A laser microprobe/mass spectrometer (LMMS) was used to extract volatile elements and molecules from particles larger than 10 microns, and an improved hexane rinsing technique was developed for the removal of contaminants. Results show that, because of contamination from silicone oil, freon, and hexane, most of the LMMS signal from IDPs can be interpreted as arising from contamination. Therefore, a species was not considered indigenous unless the signal was an order of magnitude greater in abundance than that released from a pure contaminant coated on gold.

Current collection by conducting bodies in the low earth orbit

Collection of electrons by a conducting cylinder in a flowing magnetized plasma is studied by means of numerical simulations. Transport of electrons across magnetic field lines in regions of large electric fields in the sheath structure of the cylinder is demonstrated. The potential structures, current flow in the plasma and plasma distributions around the cylinder are presented with and without a release of a neutral gas plume near the cylinder. The simulation with the plume shows current enhancement and formation of a double layer, which is found to be highly dynamic. The simulation with the neutral gas plume simulates the plasma processes occurring in a plasma contactor.

Current collection and current closure in the Tethered Satellite System

Current collection and closure-path modeling are examined analytically with respect to the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). A particle-in cell code is compared with a one-dimensional unmagnetized fluid code to model the behavior of a positively charged satellite in the ionosphere. The morphology of the sheath and the sheath-region processes are thus examined, and the influence of ions leaving the sheath region is found to cause the attraction of an electron current that is 40 times greater than the steady state value. The enhancement is transient and enhances the acceleration of the electrons in the sheath. A set of modified MHD equations, including those for ion inertia, quasineutrality, and electron drift, is employed to model TSS current closure. Whistler modes are found to exist and can be excited as the TSS passes through the ionosphere. Important conclusions include a significant fluctuation level in the steady state sheath, an ion void which affects the electron population, and some long-lived electrons trapped in the settled sheath with respect to two directions.

The extended duration orbiter waste collection system

A new waste collection system (WCS) is undergoing development for use in the extended duration orbiter (EDO). Requirements for missions up to 18 days and the capability for missions up to 30 days necessitate the development of a new WCS that will have the appropriate capacity. The new system incorporates design features from both Skylab and Space Shuttle Orbiter WCSs. The system for EDO utilizes redundant fans and urine separators. Plans call for the new WCS to be implemented for OV-105 (Endeavor) as well as for EDO. This paper describes the design and development status of the new WCS.
