Core noise measurements from a small, general aviation turbofan engine

As part of a program to investigate combustor and other core noises, simultaneous measurements of internal fluctuating pressure and far field noise were made with a JT15D turbofan engine. Acoustic waveguide probes, located in the engine at the combustor, at the turbine exit and in the core nozzle wall, were used to measure internal fluctuating pressures. Low frequency acoustic power determined at the core nozzle exit corresponds in level to the far-field acoustic power at engine speeds below 65% of maximum, the approach condition. At engine speeds above 65% of maximum, the jet noise dominates in the far-field, greatly exceeding that of the core. From coherence measurements, it is shown that the combustor is the dominant source of the low frequency core noise. The results obtained from the JT15D engine were compared with those obtained previously from a YF102 engine, both engines having reverse flow annular combustors and being in the same size class.

Interaction between electron holes in a strongly magnetized plasma

The interaction between electron holes in a strongly magnetized, plasma-filled waveguide is investigated by means of computer simulation. Two holes may or may not coalesce, depending on their amplitudes and velocities. The interaction between holes and Trivelpiece-Gould solitons is demonstrated to be weak.

Vibrations of three-dimensional pipe systems with acoustic coupling

A general algorithm is developed to calculate the beam-type dynamic response of three dimensional multiplane finite length pipe systems, consisting of elbow and straight ducts with continuous interfaces. Emphasis is on secondary acoustic wave effects giving rise to coupling mechanisms; and the simulation accounts for one-dimensional elastoacoustic coupling from a plane acoustic wave and secondary loads resulting from wave asymmetries. The transfer matrix approach is adopted in modeling the elastodynamics of each duct, with allowance for distribution loads. Secondary loads from plane wave distortion are considered with a solution of the Helmholtz equation in an equivalent rigid waveguide, and effects of path imperfection are introduced as a perturbation from the hypothetical perfectly straight pipe. Computations indicate that the one-dimensional acoustic assumption is valid for frequencies below one-half the first cut-off frequency, and the three-dimensional acoustic effects produce an increase in response levels near and above cut-off.

Applications of electro-optic gratings in integrated optical signal processing devices

A variety of applications of electro-optically induced Bragg gratings in integrated optical signal processing and computation devices are shown. The gratings are easy to fabricate, operate efficiently on relatively low voltages and have design principles which are well known and reliable. The component allows a rapid and efficient interaction with an optical wave in a planar electro-optic waveguide. The operation of such gratings and their use as intensity modulators, spatial light modulators, and components in correlators and in a variety of computational units is described.

Microwave system performance summary

The design of the microwave system for the solar power satellite is described. Design modifications recommended include changes in phase control to the power module level, a reduction in allowable amplitude jitter, the use of metal matrix waveguides, and sequences for startup/shutdown procedures. Investigations into reshaping the beam pattern to improve overall rectenna collection efficiency and improve sidelobe control are surveyed.

A theoretical study of microwave beam absorption by a rectenna

The rectenna's microwave power beam absorption limit was theoretically confirmed by two mathematical models descriptive of the microwave absorption process; first one model was based on the current sheet equivalency of a large planar array above a reflector and the second model, which was based on the properties of a waveguide with special imaging characteristics, quantified the electromagnetic modes (field configurations) in the immediate vicinity of a Rectenna element spacing which permit total power beam absorption by preventing unwanted modes from propagating (scattering) were derived using these models. Several factors causing unwanted scattering are discussed.

Power amplifiers (tube)

An experimental model of the SPS transmitting antenna architecture was developed by combining a microwave oven magnetron with a ferrite circulator, a section of slotted waveguide radiator, and a control system to force the amplitude and the phase of the radiated output to follow phase and amplitude references. The amplitude control arrangement is depicted and evaluated.

Schottky diode mm detectors with improved sensitivity and dynamic range

A detector which features a low-barrier Si Schottky diode is discussed. The unbiased diode has a sensitivity of -60 dBm and a range of 50 dB at 95 GHz, and fixed tuning yields a sensitivity within 2 dB from 75-110 GHz. A limitation of the low-barrier diode is a reduction in the low-level sensitivity by 16 dB under a 100 kilohms load. Use of the diode with a video impedance of 120 kilohms enables the offset voltage to be nulled with an appropriate control. Operation of the diode in a waveguide mount for use as a mixer is described, along with detector rectification.

Effective refractive index and first-order-mode cutoff conditions in InGaAsP/InP DH laser structures /lambda = 1.2-1.6 microns/

A highly accurate analytical expression for the effective refractive index in In GaAsP/InP DH lasers emitting in the 1.2-1.6 micron range is presented. This closed-form expression is used to derive simple wavelength-independent expressions for the first-order mode cutoff conditions of various lateral waveguides. The effective refractive index is a function of emission wavelength and active layer thickness, and the mode cutoff conditions are compared to experimental data from mode-stabilized 1.3 and 1.55 micron DH lasers.

Mode characteristics of nonplanar double-heterojunction and large-optical-cavity laser structures

Mode behavior of nonplanar double-heterojunction (DH) and large-optical-cavity (LOC) lasers is investigated using the effective index method to model the lateral field distribution. The thickness variations of various layers for the devices discussed are correlated with the growth characteristics of liquid-phase epitaxy over topographical features (channels, mesas) etched into the substrate. The effective dielectric profiles of constricted double-heterojunction (CDH)-LOC lasers show a strong influence on transverse mode operation: the fundamental transverse mode (i.e., in the plane perpendicular to the junction) may be laterally index-guided, while the first (high)-order mode is laterally index-antiguided. The analytical model developed uses a smoothly varying hyperbolic cosine distribution to characterize lateral index variations. The waveguide model is applied to several lasers to illustrate conditions necessary to convert leaky modes to trapped ones via the active-region gain distribution. Theoretical radiation patterns are calculated using model parameters, and matched to an experimental far-field pattern.

Ground-based mm-wave emission spectroscopy for the detection and monitoring of stratospheric ozone

The molecular rotational spectrum of ozone is quite rich in the mm-wave region from 50 to 300 GHz. An apparatus, which was developed primarily for detection and measurement of stratospheric ClO and other trace molecules, is found to be well suited also for the observation of ozone lines. The collecting antenna of the apparatus is a simple mm-waveguide feedhorn. The detector is a superheterodyne mixer using a special high frequency Schottky diode and a klystron local oscillator. The spectrometer is a 256 channel filter bank with 1 MHz resolution per channel. The apparatus is believed to be the first ground-based mm-wave instrument having the capability of obtaining data of sufficient quality to make use of the inversion technique. The ground based radio technique is most sensitive to changes in vertical distribution in the region above 25 km, a region which is difficult to sample by other techniques.

Terraced-heterostructure large-optical-cavity AlGaAs diode laser - A new type of high-power CW single-mode device

A new terraced lateral wave confining structure is obtained by liquid phase epitaxy over channeled substrates misoriented perpendicular to the channels' direction. Single spatial and longitudinal mode CW operation is achieved to 50 mW from one facet, in large spot sizes (2 x 7.5 micron, 1/e squared points in intensity) and narrow beams (6 deg x 23 deg), full width half-power). At 70 C ambient temperature CW lasing is obtained to 15 mW from one facet. Weak mode confinement in an asymmetric lateral waveguides provides discrimination against high-order mode oscillation.

Dependence of injection locking of a TEA CO2 laser on intensity of injected radiation

The results of an experimental study to determine the minimum required injected power to control the output frequency of a TEA CO2 laser are reported. A CW CO2 waveguide laser was used as the injection oscillator. Both the power and the frequency of the injected radiation were varied, while the TEA resonator cavity length was adjusted to match the frequency of the injected signal. Single-longitudinal mode (SLM) TEA laser radiation was produced for injected power levels which are several orders of magnitude below those previously reported. The ratio of SLM output power to injection power exceeded 10 to the 12th at the lowest levels of injected intensity.

Thermal Analysis of the X-band 34-meter Antenna Feedcone

A thermal analysis was done to describe feedcone shell temperature profiles and induced thermal stresses in waveguide components. IMP-SS, a steady-state version of the thermal analysis computer program employing the implicit alterating-direction numerical technique documented in a previous report, was used to analyze the two dimensional regions of the feedcone. This portion of the analysis determined the free relative displacement of the feedcone for a worst-case thermal condition.
