Quasioptical circuits relating to frequency multipliers.

Description of the various major components useful in a 30- to 60-GHz varactor doubler circuit employing quasi-optical techniques. A description is given of the required directional filters, waveguide tuners, and varactor mounts. An attempt is made to determine the potential efficiency of various quasi-optical multiplier mounts and also to compare the efficiency obtainable by quasi-optical techniques with that achievable in standard-waveguide multiplier mounts.

Shaped Beam KU-Band Antenna Design

Antenna systems for a Ku-band synchronous orbit communications satellite were considered. A multiple beam offset feed cluster used in conjunction with an offset parabolic reflector was chosen for the antenna realization. For radiating elements in the feed array, polyrod or dielectric rod radiators fed by waveguide are investigated. Polyrod antennas shrink the cross section of the waveguide required, are fairly directive, and can be tapered to reduce sidelobes. As a consequence, it is thought that mutual coupling effects between adjacent elements will be minimal and the resultant physically small elements will allow greater packing densities for the drive elements in the feed array than would otherwise be possible.

A millimeter wave mixer

The mixer consists of a small metallic wafer, in which are embedded the semiconductor diodes, the waveguide mount is used to couple the diode wafer to the signal circuit, an RF tuning element, and a 3 mm coaxial connector for the IF output terminal. The cross-sectional dimension is that of the waveguide flange (19 mm x 19 mm, 0.75" x 0.75"), the overall length is nominally 25 mm (1.0 inch). This component is to be used as a single-ended RF mixer with four replacement mixer diodes, operating in the three millimeter wavelength band.

Meteorological radar facility (MRF) slot conductance investigations

A preliminary meteorological radar facility (MRF) array design was completed in support of the slot conductance measurement program. Three different slot measurement techniques were evaluated. The selection of the probe comparison measurement technique was selected as the principal experimental method with the impedance measurement technique chosen to measure a few higher conductance slots to be used as reference slots. The impedance of 43 slots in 0.9 x 0.4 inch standard waveguide and of 40 slots in 0.835 x 0.4 inch waveguide was measured. Also, impedance measurements were made of a few slots using image planes to simulate mutual coupling effects. The measured and theoretical conductance, susceptance, and radiation phase data are presented in graphic form as a function of slot displacement for constant slot length, and of slot length for constant slot displacement. It is concluded that the proposed MRF array design approach is a feasible one.

Focal characteristics of spheroidal geodesic lenses for integrated optical processing

Aspheric shaping of geodesic lenses in optical waveguides is suggested as a means for correcting spherical aberrations. The technique is complementary to the method of Spiller and Harper, in which geodesic lens aberrations are reduced by thickening the waveguiding layer in the lens region. The properties of a family of oblate-spheroidal lenses with no third-order spherical aberrations are described theoretically. Diffraction-limited performance over apertures up to one-half the full lens aperture is predicted for lenses with true f/numbers (focal length divided by useful aperture) in the range 2-12. By combining spheroidal-shaping and mode-index correction techniques, geodesic lenses free from both third- and fifth-order aberrations can be designed. These lenses show diffraction-limited performance over apertures of a centimeter or more when true f/numbers are in the range 1.5-9.5.

Selectable polarization at X-band

The X-band feeds in the Deep Space Network were upgraded to include selectable polarization in time for the Voyager missions to the outer planets. The modified antenna feed has the following major items added: two circular waveguide rotary joints, drive motor and gear reducer, gear assembly, two microswitches, and a polarization control junction box. The overall length of the feed remains the same because circular waveguide spacing sections were designed into the original feed to readily permit such modifications. There is no significant increase in antenna noise temperature compared to the original feed.

Analysis and design of optically pumped far infrared oscillators and amplifiers

A waveguide laser oscillator was designed and experimental measurements made of relationships among output power, pressure, pump power, pump frequency, cavity tuning, output beam pattern, and cavity mirror properties for various active gases. A waveguide regenerative amplifier was designed and gain measurements were made for various active gases. An external Fabry-Perot interferometer was fabricated and used for accurate wavelength determination and for measurements of the refractive indices of solids transparent in the far infrared. An electronic system was designed and constructed to provide an appropriate error signal for use in feedback control of pump frequency. Pump feedback from the FIR laser was decoupled using a vibrating mirror to phase modulate the pump signal.

Verifying root fusion in electron-beam welds

Ultrasonic equipment and x-y recorder indicate where back side of joint is properly welded. Wire waveguide placed in groove at root of joint to be welded is fused when joint is adequately penetrated. Ultransonic signal moving down waveguide is reflected where guide is melted. Change in reflected-signal arrival time with change in weld-head position is nearly constant unless joint is incompletely penetrated. Method permits determination of penetration depth in preweld samples without opening vacuum chamber and sectioning weld. Technique is particularly valuable when back side of joint is inaccessible.

Phase 2: Array automated assembly task low cost silicon solar array project

Several microwave systems for use in solar cell fabrication were developed and experimentally tested. The first system used a standing wave rectangular waveguide horn applicator. Satisfactory results were achieved with this system for impedance matching and wafer surface heating uniformity. The second system utilized a resonant TM sub 011 mode cylindrical cavity but could not be employed due to its poor energy coupling efficiency. The third and fourth microwave systems utilized a circular waveguide operating in the TM sub 01 and TM sub 11 but had problems with impedance matching, efficiency, and field uniformity.

Beamed microwave power transmitting and receiving subsystems radiation characteristics

Measured characteristics of the spectrum of typical converters and the distribution of radiated Radio Frequency (RF) energy from the terminals (transmitting antenna and rectenna) of a beamed microwave power subsystem are presented for small transmitting and receiving S-band (2.45 GHz) subarrays. Noise and harmonic levels of tube and solid-state RF power amplifiers are shown. The RF patterns and envelope of a 64 element slotted waveguide antenna are given for the fundamental frequency and harmonics through the fifth. Reflected fundamental and harmonic patterns through the fourth for a 42 element rectenna subarray are presented for various dc load and illumination conditions. Bandwidth measurements for the waveguide antenna and rectenna are shown.

Tunable single-longitudinal-mode operation of an injection-locked TEA CO2 laser

The tunable single-longitudinal-mode operation of a TEA CO2 laser by an injection technique using a CW waveguide laser as the master oscillator is reported. With the experimental arrangement described, in which the waveguide laser frequency is tuned to correspond to one of the oscillating longitudinal modes of the TEA laser, single-longitudinal-mode operation was achieved with no apparent reduction in the TEA output energy, on various CO2 lines with frequency offsets from the line center as large as 300 MHz. The capability of this technique for high-resolution spectroscopy or atmospheric lidar studies is demonstrated by the recording of the absorption spectrum of a strong ozone line.

Multi-mode horn antenna simulation

Radiation patterns were computed for a circular multimode horn antenna using waveguide electric field radiation expressions. The circular multimode horn was considered as a possible reflector feed antenna for the Large Antenna Multifrequency Microwave Radiometer (LAMMR). This horn antenna uses a summation of the TE sub 11 deg and TM sub 11 deg modes to generate far field primary radiation patterns with equal E and H plane beamwidths and low sidelobes. A computer program for the radiation field expressions using the summation of waveguide radiation modes is described. The sensitivity of the multimode horn antenna radiation patterns to phase variations between the two modes is given. Sample radiation pattern calculations for a reflector feed horn for LAMMR are shown. The multimode horn antenna provides a low noise feed suitable for radiometric applications.

The Resonant Cavity Radiator (RCR)

The design of the resonant cavity radiator (RCR) is compared to that of the slotted waveguide array in terms of efficiency, weight, and structural integrity. It is shown that the RCR design has three significant potentials over the slotted waveguide array: (1) improvement in efficiency; (2) lighter weight; and (3) simpler structure which allows the RCR to be integrated with the RF tube to alleviate thermal interface problems.

Design of throat section of conical corrugated horns

A simple graphical method is presented for designing the junction between a conical corrugated horn and a smooth-wall circular waveguide. The method gives both an insight into the field behavior along the horn and an indication of the reflection coefficient at the horn-waveguide junction. It has been applied to the design of the DSN X-S band feedhorn and an improved corrugated throat section.

The Resonant Cavity Radiator (RCR)

The fundamental theory of MW antenna operation and basic array technology development status was used in the design of the 1-km diameter 5-Gw SPS microwave antenna. However, the aperture size and the high efficiency requirements make the MW antenna extremely complex. Studies show that the slotted waveguide array is one of the most efficient radiators for the antenna. Subsequent analyses show that the temperature interface between waveguides and dc-RF conversion tubes can cause severe thermal design problems on the array. An alternate design, the Resonant Cavity Radiator, is described here.
