Evolution of chromospheres and coronae in solar mass stars - A far-ultraviolet and soft X-ray comparison of Arcturus /K2 III/ and Alpha Centauri A /G2 V/

IUE far-UV and Einstein Observatory soft X-ray observations for the red giant Arcturus and the nearby yellow dwarf Alpha-Centauri A, which are archetypes of solar mass stars in different stages of evolution, are compared. Evidence is found for neither coronal soft X-ray emission from the red giant, at surface flux levels of only 0.0006 that detected previously for the yellow dwarf, nor C II and IV resonance line emission at surface flux levels of only 0.02 those of the yellow dwarf. The resonance line upper limits and previous detections of the C II intersystem UV multiplet 0.01 near 2325 A provide evidence for an Arcturus outer atmosphere that is geometrically extended, tenuous and cool. The red giant has, in addition, a prominent cool stellar wind. An extensive tabulation of line identifications, widths and fluxes for the IUE far-UV echelle spectra of the two stars is given, and two competing explanations for the Wilson-Bappu effect are discussed.

Atomic calculations for the Fe XX X-ray lines

The atomic data presented here and in Bhatia and Mason (1980) allow the calculation of theoretical intensity ratios for all the EUV, UV, and X-ray lines from Fe XX. Tabulations are presently given for the transitions between levels in the 2s2 2p3, 2s2 2p2 3s, and 2s2 2p2 3d configurations of Fe(19+), and electron collision strengths are calculated by means of the 'distorted wave' approximation. In addition to the theoretical X-ray line intensity ratios, new spectral line identifications from a solar flare are presented.

A baroclinic quasigeostrophic open ocean model

A baroclinic quasigeostrophic open ocean model is presented, calibrated by a series of test problems, and demonstrated to be feasible and efficient for application to realistic mid-oceanic mesoscale eddy flow regimes. Two methods of treating the depth dependence of the flow, a finite difference method and a collocation method, are tested and intercompared. Sample Rossby wave calculations with and without advection are performed with constant stratification and two levels of nonlinearity, one weaker than and one typical of real ocean flows. Using exact analytical solutions for comparison, the accuracy and efficiency of the model is tabulated as a function of the computational parameters and stability limits set; typically, errors were controlled between 1 percent and 10 percent RMS after two wave periods. Further Rossby wave tests with realistic stratification and wave parameters chosen to mimic real ocean conditions were performed to determine computational parameters for use with real and simulated data. Finally, a prototype calculation with quasiturbulent simulated data was performed successfully, which demonstrates the practicality of the model for scientific use.

JPL pulsar timing observations. II - Geocentric arrival times

Monitoring of the behavior of naturally pulsating galactic radio sources, or pulsars, through regularly spaced measurements of pulse arrival times, has been conducted by several laboratories. A tabular presentation is here made of pulse arrival time measurements from the NASA Deep Space Network between late 1968 and early 1981. By expressing the measurements in ephemeris time, and referring them to the geocenter, usable tables of results have been generated for each pulsar listed in the first of the tables given. The considerations addressed by the tables are: (1) a necessary step in the study of pulsar dynamics is the reduction of topocentric arrival times to the barycenter of the solar system; (2) the tabulated data are accessible to all opinions as to the procedures to be used in interpreting arrival time data; and (3) different observing programs can usually be combined to produce an improvement in the total data set.

Relative frequency and diurnal variation of high cold clouds in the tropical Atlantic and Pacific

The percentage of cold clouds less than or equal to 240 K was tabulated from Nimbus-5 data in 2 deg latitude-longitude squares over tropical oceans in the North Atlantic and Pacific for day (1130 LST) and night (2330 LST). The maximum percentage and amplitude of the diurnal variation are in the eastern Atlantic and Pacific. Day percentages are higher than at night in the entire 6-10 deg N belt of the Atlantic. Weaker night maxima are to the north and south of this belt. In the Pacific, the distribution of day and night predominance is more variable.

Einstein and IUE observations of nearby red dwarfs

This paper summarizes data for 40 representative nearby stars from one guest observer's coordinated programs with the Einstein Observatory or IUE Observatory. The coronal X-ray, chromospheric ultraviolet, and auxiliary optical properties of sets of these stars are tabulated or illustrated in several ways. Factors of stellar duplicity are shown to be quite prevalent in presenting the observations. The most luminous X-ray dwarfs below the sun are strongly prone to binary status. X-ray luminosity, and the ratio of chromospheric flux to X-ray flux, are dependent on photospheric radius. A very long period BY Draconis variable of type dM6e (HH And) is a detected X-ray source, and some presumably quite old (halo) stars are detected.

Electron collisional rate coefficients for low-level transitions in hydrogen

There exists presently no general agreement concerning the collisional excitation rates of atomic hydrogen. The present investigation is concerned with the results reported by various investigators, taking into account the semiempirical rates of Johnson (1972), a study conducted by Aggarwal (1983), empirically based rates of Crandall et al. (1974), and the rates tabulated in Osterbrock (1974), based on the close-coupling calculations of Burke et al. (1967). It is found that there is a major conflict between the 'best' theoretical and Johnson values on the one hand, and the empirical data on the other. A study of the data shows that the Johnson value for the 1 to 2 rate agrees well with other theoretical calculations, and within 25 percent of empirical measurements, but that the Johnson 1 to 3 rate is 40-75 percent of the 'best' theoretical calculations.

Radar remote sensing for crop classification and canopy condition assessment: Ground-data documentation

A vegetation and soil-moisture experiment was conducted in order to examine the microwave emission and backscattering from vegetation canopies and soils. The data-acquisition methodology used in conjunction with the mobile radar scatterometer (MRS) systems is described and associated ground-truth data are documented. Test fields were located in the Kansas River floodplain north of Lawrence, Kansas. Ten fields each of wheat, corn, and soybeans were monitored over the greater part of their growing seasons. The tabulated data summarize measurements made by the sensor systems and represent target characteristics. Target parameters describing the vegetation and soil characteristics include plant moisture, density, height, and growth stage, as well as soil moisture and soil-bulk density. Complete listings of pertinent crop-canopy and soil measurements are given.

Erosion and transport of eolian materials on Mars

An abrasion chamber was constructed to produce grain to grain impacts and to eliminate, as far as possible, grain to wall impact. Quartz, basalt, olivine, and volcanic ash were used as abrasives to determine particle longevity on Mars during eolian abrasion. The various abrasion velocities, measured velocity or particles, calculated velocity of collision, time during which abrasion took place, the charge (material) in grams, and the percent remaining after completion are tabulated. The tests show that if coarse sand-sized particles of the composition presumably present on Mars are moved at the wind velocities given, almost complete destruction can occur in geologically insignificant time periods. Grain to rock collisions are not necessary for almost complete destruction; grain to grain collisions are sufficient.

Study and review of permanent magnets for electric vehicle propulsion motors

A study of permanent magnets (PM) was performed in support of the DOE/NASA electric and hybrid vehicle program. PM requirements for electric propulsion motors are analyzed, design principles and relevant properties of magnets are discussed. Available PM types are reviewed. For the needed high-grade magnets, design data, commercial varieties and sources are tabulated, based on a survey of vendors. Economic factors such as raw material availability, production capability and cost are analyzed, especially for cobalt and the rare earths. Extruded Mn-Al-C magnets from Japan were experimentally characterized. Dynamic magnetic data for the range -50 deg to +150 deg C and some mechanical properties are reported. The state of development of the important PM material families is reviewed. Feasible improvements or new developments of magnets for electric vehicle motors are identified.

Observations of emission in bright, low redshift quasars

Ultraviolet, infrared, and optical spectra were combined to obtain a data set sample as broad as possible in the range of hydrogen lines in individual quasars. From the measured Lyman fluxes, coupled with Balmer and Paschen line fluxes measured in these same objects, an effort was made to establish observational constraints that would guide models of the broad emission line regions of quasars. It was found that IUE spectra were generally of sufficiently high quality to derive line profiles of the ultraviolet lines Lyman alpha and CIV 1550 A, which were compared to the Balmer line profiles. The objects observed and the line fluxes are tabulated. Plots of line profiles are included.

LANDSAT-4 MSS interband registration

Interband registration on raw LANDSAT-4 MSS data was measured in the four MSS bands of the Mistassini, Quebec scene (path-row 16-24, June 21, 1983). Statistical comparison between line-pixel locations of uniformly distributed ground control points in the four different bands permitted quantitative measures of the offset over the entire scene. The statistical distribution of the offset measures permitted evaluation of the standard error on the mean values, giving confidence on their precision. Results obtained using a manual ground control point done on a digital image correction system and those obtained using digital band-to-band correlation adapted from a digital stereographic correlation algorithm are tabulated. The pixel misrepresentation values obtained are compared with published NASA figures.

LANDSAT-MSS multitemporal registration

The multitemporal registration of LANDSAT-4 MSS products was tested for two different geocoded subscenes acquired in 1982 and 1983. The scenes were then compared with LANDSAT-2 MSS geocoded data from 1981. Statistical comparison between line-pixel locations of uniformly distributed ground control points in the three geocoded products permitted quantitative measure of the offset over the sub-scene. Values of line and pixel misregistration obtained using the manual ground control points and digital correlation are tabulated and discussed.
