ROLM computers in the flight testing of the Fokker F29 aircraft

The design, development, installation, and operation of the test equipment (MRVS) is discussed. The main feature of the MRVS is continuous recording on an instrumentation recorder data of up to 1500 parameters with a total sample rate of up to 10,000 samples per second. In order to compress the evaluation and calibration time period, the following additional requirements were set for two test systems: (1) recording of selected parameters, time tagged on computer compatible tape (CCT); (2) recording of selected high bandwidth signals and ad hoc parameters on analog tape; (3) onboard presentation of calibrated parameter data, in engineering units, in numerical as well as graphical form for: system checkout during pre-, in- and post-flight, and quick look analysis during in-flight; (4) real time presentation on the ground by telemetry for: flight monitoring, takeoff and landing measurements, and noise measurements; and (5) data processing on the ground on the Fokker-NLR computer network.

Advanced Space Shuttle simulation model

A non-recursive model (based on von Karman spectra) for atmospheric turbulence along the flight path of the shuttle orbiter was developed. It provides for simulation of instantaneous vertical and horizontal gusts at the vehicle center-of-gravity, and also for simulation of instantaneous gusts gradients. Based on this model the time series for both gusts and gust gradients were generated and stored on a series of magnetic tapes, entitled Shuttle Simulation Turbulence Tapes (SSTT). The time series are designed to represent atmospheric turbulence from ground level to an altitude of 120,000 meters. A description of the turbulence generation procedure is provided. The results of validating the simulated turbulence are described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented. One-dimensional von Karman spectra are tabulated, while a discussion of the minimum frequency simulated is provided. The results of spectral and statistical analyses of the SSTT are presented.

Development of sensitized pick coal interface detector system

One approach for detection of the coal interface is measurement of pick cutting loads and shock through the use of pick strain gage load cells and accelerometers. The cutting drum of a long wall mining machine contains a number of cutting picks. In order to measure pick loads and shocks, one pick was instrumented and telemetry used to transmit the signals from the drum to an instrument-type tape recorder. A data system using FM telemetry was designed to transfer cutting bit load and shock information from the drum of a longwall shearer coal mining machine to a chassis mounted data recorder. The design of components in the test data system were finalized, the required instruments were assembled, the instrument system was evaluated in an above-ground simulation test, and an underground test series to obtain tape recorded sensor data was conducted.

Design, evaluation, and fabrication of low-cost composite blades for intermediate-size wind turbines

Low cost approaches for production of 60 ft long glass fiber/resin composite rotor blades for the MOD-OA wind turbine were identified and evaluated. The most cost-effective configuration was selected for detailed design. Subelement and subscale specimens were fabricated for testing to confirm physical and mechanical properties of the composite blade materials, to develop and evaluate blade fabrication techniques and processes, and to confirm the structural adequacy of the root end joint. Full-scale blade tooling was constructed and a partial blade for tool and process tryout was built. Then two full scale blades were fabricated and delivered to NASA-LeRC for installation on a MOD-OA wind turbine at Clayton, New Mexico for operational testing. Each blade was 60 ft. long with 4.5 ft. chord at root end and 2575 lbs weight including metal hub adapter. The selected blade configuration was a three cell design constructed using a resin impregnated glass fiber tape winding process that allows rapid wrapping of primarily axially oriented fibers onto a tapered mandrel, with tapered wall thickness. The ring winder/transverse filament tape process combination was used for the first time on this program to produce entire rotor blade structures. This approach permitted the complete blade to be wound on stationary mandrels, an improvement which alleviated some of the tooling and process problems encountered on previous composite blade programs.

Delineation of soil temperature regimes from HCMM data

Supplementary data including photographs as well as topographic, geologic, and soil maps were obtained and evaluated for ground truth purposes and control point selection. A study area (approximately 450 by 450 pixels) was subset from LANDSAT scene No. 2477-17142. Geometric corrections and scaling were performed. Initial enhancement techniques were initiated to aid control point selection and soils interpretation. The SUBSET program was modified to read HCMM tapes and HCMM data were reformated so that they are compatible with the ORSER system. Initial NMAP products of geometrically corrected and scaled raw data tapes (unregistered) of the study were produced.

Magsat science investigations

The optimal source spacing for the computer delta-B data set was determined from the intermediate attitude tapes. A U.S. magnetization map based on this result is in preparation. Computed delta-B from the fine-attitude tapes is unexpectedly noisy; the reason for this is being sought.

Investigations of medium wavelength magnetic anomalies in the Eastern Pacific using Magsat data

Processing continued on the data set covering the first three months of the mission. Orbits were selected over a specified range of longitude and latitude and those orbits falling within the geographical boundaries were stored on a disk and a listing made. To verify the quality of the data, plots were made showing altitude vs latitude, anomalous field vs latitude, and corrected anomalous field vs latitude. Results of the plotting showed that: (1) data from the first day of the mission are not usable because they are too noisy; (2) some orbits contain spikes, no doubt a processing error on the tape; (3) some orbits contain a 20 deg region in latitude, offset roughly 30 nT from the rest of the anomalous field profiles; and (4) the correlation between the adjacent orbits is poor. Even the new ring current coefficients provided with a later, corrected set of data tapes did not not yield the desired correlations.

Advanced Space Shuttle simulation model

The effects of atmospheric turbulence in horizontal and near-horizontal flight during the return of the Space Shuttle are important for determining design, control, and pilot-in-the-loop effects. A nonrecursive model (based on vonKarman spectra) for atmospheric turbulence along the flight path of the Shuttle Orbiter has been developed which provides for simulation of instantaneous vertical and horizontal gusts at the vehicle center-of-gravity and also for simulation of instantaneous gust gradients. Based on this model the time series for gusts and gust gradients have been generated and stored on a series of magnetic tapes which are entitled Shuttle Simulation Turbulence Tapes (SSTT). The time series are designed to represent atmospheric turbulence from ground level to an altitude of 120,000 meters. A description of the turbulence generation procedure is provided, the results of validating the simulated turbulence are described, and conclusions and recommendations are presented. Appendices provide tabulated one-dimensional vonKarman spectra, a discussion of the minimum frequency simulated, and the results of spectral and statistical analyses of the SSTT.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Procedures were established to select quiet, least-disturbed MAGSAT data in an effort to study the magnetic field originating in the solid Earth. A preliminary map of scalar field anomalies over Canada and adjacent regions was produced. Data from Fort Churchill magnetic observatory (an auroral zone station) were used in classifying MAGSAT passes as quiet, unsettled, or disturbed. Determinations of long-term quiet levels at Canadian magnetic observatories are being made. For the time interval of each MAGSAT pass, the deviations of the mean hourly values of the magnetic field components are determined from these quiet levels, in particular for Fort Churchill. Primary processing all CHRONINT tapes received to date, involved decoding orbit records, decimating data records, selecting time intervals and latitude intervals, and producing output tapes carrying records with data point time, position and magnetic information. Subsequent processing converts the coordinate system from geocentric to geodetic and removes a reference field.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of OAO 2 filter photometry of 531 stars of diverse types

A magnetic tape version of the ultraviolet photometry of 531 stars observed with the Wisconsin Experiment Package aboard the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO 2) is described. The data were obtained with medium band interference filters and were reduced to a uniform magnitude system. They represent a subset of partially reduced data currently on file at the National Space Science Data Center. The document is intended to enable users of the tape file to read and process data without problems or guesswork. For technical details concerning the observations, instrumentation limitations, and interpretation of the data the reference publication should be consulted. This document was designed for distribution with any machine-readable version of the OAO 2 photometric data.

Documentation for the machine-readable AGK3-BD and BD-AGK3 cross-index catalogues

The machine-readable cross identification catalogs were prepared by extracting AGK3 and BD numbers from the magnetic tape version of the AGK3 Catalog. After preparation of the AGK3-BD file, which contains all stars in the AGK3 catalog, the file was sorted according to BD number and rearranged so that the BD number occurs at the beginning of each record. During the sorting operation, all AGK3 stars having no BD numbers were omitted. The BD-AGK3 file is especially useful for finding BD stars in the AGK3 catalog, since precession has moved stars across declination boundaries and it often was necessary to examine more than one AGK3 zone to locate a BD star in the catalog. The contents of the cross index files is described so that users can read and process the tape without problems, guesswork, or consulting the parent catalog.

A comparison of HCMM surface temperatures with in situ temperature data

Algorithms were updated for a quicker analysis of computer compatible tapes in an effort to establish the absolute and relative accuracy of HCMM infrared data. Data for four case studies were identified and extracted from the tapes. These studies include three dates for the Nantucket Shoals region and one date for the Gulf of Mexico region. Upper air meteorological data, which are needed to make atmospheric correction of the HCMM data, are being reduced and prepared for calculation of the atmospheric effect.

Climate model postprocessing

The development of new postprocessing software of the climate modeling group is summarized. Code, test, and perform simulations with global general circulation models are described. The models improve understanding and ability to predict the vagaries of weather and climate. To learn from and utilize the model results, it is necessary to create elaborate postprocessing software to allow analysis of the large volume of data produced. The models produce sigma history tapes. The sigma history records are interpolated to pressure history records, which are written on a pressure history tape. The model results are analyzed on pressure surfaces, with snap shots or time averages.
