Transients in a periodic slab - Coupled waves approach

The reflection and transmission of rectangular and Gaussian pulses impinging on a periodically stratified slab are studied and a number of examples are illustrated and analyzed. The coupled waves approach is used to derive the reflection and transmission coefficient, then the fast Fourier transform is used to illustrate the transient responses.

Period changes in Centaurus X-3

A number of mechanisms which can change the orbital period are applied to various models of Cen X-3. Only four models which give rise to feasible mechanisms are found. Possible observations which could distinguish between these models are suggested.

Periodic motion in nonlinear systems

In this paper it is shown how some basic ideas from system theory and differential geometry can be used to establish some new results on the existence of periodic motion in autonomous feedback systems. The conditions are expressed in terms of the frequency response characteristic of the open-loop system and certain general properties of the nonlinearities.

IMS/Satellite Situation Center report. Special IMS periods for 1976

Special International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) Satellite Periods selected at times when two or more satellites are expected to be in interesting regions of the magnetosphere simultaneously are described. Data are presented to aid in defining a program of magnetospheric observations which emphasizes coordinated measurements of satellites, rockets, balloons, aircraft, and ground-based stations. The position is given of currently operating high altitude spacecraft in the Geocentric Solar Ecliptic, Geocentric Solar Magnetospheric, and Solar Magnetic coordinate systems to determine their passage through the bow shock, the magnetopause, the cusp, or the neutral sheet region. Information on the synchronous and low altitude spacecraft and experiments are included in tabular form along with a tabular summary of all the rocket, balloon, and aircraft campaigns in 1976.

A two parameter survey of periodic orbits in the restricted problem of three bodies

Within the context of the restricted problem of three bodies the effects caused by varying the mass ratio of the primaries and the eccentricity of their orbits, upon periodic orbits of the infinitesimal mass which are numerical continuations of circular orbits in the ordinary problem of two bodies are shown. A recursive power series technique is used to numerically integrate the equations of motion as well as the first variational equations in order to generate a two parameter family of perodic orbits and identify the linear stability characteristics. Seven such families are investigated with equally spaced mass ratios from 0.0 to 1.0 and eccentricities of the orbits of the primaries in a range 0.0 to 0.6. Stable orbits are associated with large distances of the infinitesimal mass from the perturbing primary, nearly circular motion of the primaries, and small mass ratios of the primaries. Unstable orbits for the infinitesimal mass are associated with small distances from the perturbing primary, highly elliptic orbits of the primaries and large mass ratios.

Spectrophotometry of comet Kohoutek (1973f) during pre-perihelion period

Scans of the head of comet Kohoutek obtained during the pre-perihelion period with a photoelectric spectrum scanner are discussed. The mean relative flux distributions and the continuum energy distribution of the head of comet Kohoutek are given and normalized to 479 nm. The emission features of CN, C3, Ch, and the principal Swan band sequences of C2 and Na are identified and discussed. The adopted monochromatic values relative to 479 nm are given and plotted along with the energy distribution of the sun.

Short time transient periodicities from Cyg X-1

The temporal behavior of three new events of modulated optical emission from Cyg X1, detected in July 1975, is presented. Short time periodicities in the optical band are investigated. Single photon pulses from the photomultiplier are recorded on magnetic tape together with a very accurate 1 kHz reference frequency. During playback of the tape, the reference signal gives a 1 ms timing to a scaler interfaced with a small processor and the number of photon per millisecond is recorded on a digital tape.

Variations in the spectra and pulse period of GX301-2

Spectra from observations of GX301-2 (3U1223-62) by the Goddard X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8 show an absorption edge due to cool iron with column densities of a few x 10 to the 19th power/cm squared. A decrease in intensity was associated with increased absorption and a spectrum similar to those of binary X-ray sources in absorption dips. Observed variations of the pulse period are consistent with Doppler shifts for reasonable orbit parameters.

Comparison of periodic and other characteristics of geomagnetic and meterological rocket data

The temporal variations in stratospheric winds and temperatures with the geomagnetic field elements were compared. From a periodic analysis of the geomagnetic field elements the amplitude and phase of the quasibiennial, annual, and semiannual waves are given for stations from 1 degree S to 89 degree N. These results are then compared with corresponding waves reported in rocketsonde wind and temperature data. The annual waves are found to be coupled as a result of the annual variation in the dynamo effect of the wind in the lower ionosphere. The semiannual waves are also found to be coupled and three possible causes for the extra tropical stratospheric semiannual wind wave are discussed. Time variance spectra for the interval from 4 days to 44 days in both zonal winds and horizontal geomagnetic field intensity are compared for years when major midwinter warmings occur and years when only minor warmings occur. The noted differences are suggested to arise from upward propagating planetary waves which are absorbed or refracted in varying amounts depending on the prevailing circulation.

Observation of gamma rays with a 4.8 hour periodicity from CYG X-3

Energetic (E35 MeV) Gamma rays were observed from Cyg X-3 with the SAS-2 Gamma ray telescope. They are modulated at the 4.8 sup h period observed in the X-ray and infrared regions, and within the statistical error are in phase with this emission. The flux above 100 MeV has an average value of (4.4 + or - 1.1)x 10 to the -6 power/sq cm/sec. If the distance to Cyg X-3 is 10 kpcs, this flux implies a luminosity of more than 10 to the 37th power ergs/s if the radiation is isotropic and about 10 to the 36th power ergs/s if the radiation is restricted to a cone of one steradian, as it might be in a pulsar.

Quantization and symmetry in periodic coverage patterns with applications to earth observation

The general orbit-coverage problem in a simplified physical model is investigated by application of numerical approaches derived from basic number theory. A system of basic and general properties is defined by which idealized periodic coverage patterns may be characterized, classified, and delineated. The principal common features of these coverage patterns are their longitudinal quantization, determined by the revolution number R, and their overall symmetry.

Explorer 45 /S3-A/ observations of the magnetosphere and magnetopause during the August 4-6, 1972, magnetic storm period

The Explorer 45 (S3-A) satellite performed extensive field and particle measurements in the heart of the magnetosphere during the double magnetic storm period of August 4-6, 1972. Both the ground level magnetic records and the magnetic field deformations measured along the orbit by the satellite indicated the existence of only a moderate ring current. This was confirmed by the measurements of the total proton energy density by the on-board particle detectors, which showed a maximum energy density less than the densities observed during the December 1971 and June 1972 magnetic storms. The plasmapause in the noon quadrant was eroded continuously from the onset of the first storm at the beginning of August 4 to an altitude below L = 2.07 at about 1800 hours on August 5. Throughout the entire orbit during which the second sudden commencement occurred, a large amount of low-frequency electric and magnetic field noise was encountered. The most remarkable observation during this orbit was the contraction of the magnetopause to distances inside the satellite location at L = 5.2.

Periodic solutions to systems of reaction-diffusion equations

Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of temporally periodic 'dissipative structure' solutions in weak diffusion with the reaction rate terms dominant in a generic system of reaction-diffusion differential equations. The enumerator index i of the equations denotes the density or concentration of the ith participating molecular or biological species, and D sub i is the diffusivity constant for the ith species while Q sub i (c), an algebraic function of the n-tuple c, expresses the local rate of production of the ith species due to chemical reactions or biological interactions.

On the periodic coordination of linear stochastic systems

The decentralized stochastic control of a linear dynamic system consisting of several subsystems is considered. A two-level approach is used by the introduction of a coordinator who collects measurements from the local controllers periodically and in return transmits coordinating parameters. Two types of coordination are considered: open-loop feedback and closed loop. The resulting control laws are found to be intuitively attractive.

Behavior of low-energy protons and alpha particles during a disturbed time period

The paper presents observations of 130- to 1200-keV protons and 40- to 420-keV/nucleon alpha particles made on the earth-orbiting spacecraft Imp 8 and Imp 7 during an active solar period in September 1974, concentrating, in particular, on an energetic storm particle (ESP) event observed in association with an interplanetary shock wave on September 21. It is found that the observed variations in the proton-to-alpha particle ratios and spectral indices can be explained either by 'pileup' or by acceleration models of ESP events. Several instances of local acceleration of particles in the near-earth environment are also discussed.
