Towards complete assignment of the infrared spectrum of the protonated water cluster H + (H 2 O) 21

The spectroscopic features of protonated water species in dilute acid solutions have been long sought after for understanding the microscopic behavior of the proton in water with gas-phase water clusters H + (H 2 O) n extensively studied as bottom-up model systems. We present a new protocol for the calculation of the infrared (IR) spectra of complex systems, which combines the fragment-based Coupled Cluster method and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, and demonstrate its accuracy towards the complete and accurate assignment of the IR spectrum of the H + (H 2 O) 21 cluster. The site-specific IR spectral signatures reveal two distinct structures for the internal and surface four-coordinated water molecules, which are ice-like and liquid-like, respectively. The effect of inter-molecular interaction between water molecules is addressed, and the vibrational resonance is found between the O-H stretching fundamental and the bending overtone of the nearest neighboring water molecule. The revelation of the spectral signature of the excess proton offers deeper insight into the nature of charge accommodation in the extended hydrogen-bonding network underpinning this aqueous cluster.

Momentum-independent magnetic excitation continuum in the honeycomb iridate H 3 LiIr 2 O 6

Understanding the interplay between the inherent disorder and the correlated fluctuating-spin ground state is a key element in the search for quantum spin liquids. H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 is considered to be a spin liquid that is proximate to the Kitaev-limit quantum spin liquid. Its ground state shows no magnetic order or spin freezing as expected for the spin liquid state. However, hydrogen zero-point motion and stacking faults are known to be present. The resulting bond disorder has been invoked to explain the existence of unexpected low-energy spin excitations, although data interpretation remains challenging. Here, we use resonant X-ray spectroscopies to map the collective excitations in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 and characterize its magnetic state. In the low-temperature correlated state, we reveal a broad bandwidth of magnetic excitations. The central energy and the high-energy tail of the continuum are consistent with expectations for dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions between dynamically fluctuating spins. Furthermore, the absence of a momentum dependence to these excitations are consistent with disorder-induced broken translational invariance. Our low-energy data and the energy and width of the crystal field excitations support an interpretation of H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 as a disordered topological spin liquid in close proximity to bond-disordered versions of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid.

Low-temperature hydroformylation of ethylene by phosphorous stabilized Rh sites in a one-pot synthesized Rh-(O)-P-MFI zeolite

Zeolites containing Rh single sites stabilized by phosphorous were prepared through a one-pot synthesis method and are shown to have superior activity and selectivity for ethylene hydroformylation at low temperature (50°C). Catalytic activity is ascribed to confined Rh 2 O 3 clusters in the zeolite which evolve under reaction conditions into single Rh 3+ sites. These Rh 3+ sites are effectively stabilized in a Rh-(O)-P structure by using tetraethylphosphonium hydroxide as a template, which generates in situ phosphate species after H 2 activation. In contrast to Rh 2 O 3 , confined Rh0 clusters appear less active in propanal production and ultimately transform into Rh(I)(CO) 2 under similar reaction conditions. As a result, we show that it is possible to reduce the temperature of ethylene hydroformylation with a solid catalyst down to 50°C, with good activity and high selectivity, by controlling the electronic and morphological properties of Rh species and the reaction conditions.

Bulk high-temperature superconductivity in pressurized tetragonal La 2 PrNi 2 O 7

The Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) bilayer nickelate, La 3 Ni 2 O 7 , was recently found to show signatures of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) at pressures above 14 GPa . Subsequent investigations achieved zero resistance in single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Yet, obviousdiamagnetic signals, the other hallmark of superconductors, are still lacking owing to the flamentary nature with low superconducting volume fraction. The presence of a new 1313 polymorph and competing R–P phases obscured proper identification of the phase for HTSC. Thus, achieving bulk HTSC and identifying the phase at play are the most prominent tasks. Here we address these issues in the praseodymium (Pr)-doped La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 polycrystalline samples. We find that substitutions of Pr for La efectively inhibit the intergrowth of diferent R–P phases, resulting in a nearly pure bilayer structure. For La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 , pressure-induced orthorhombic to tetragonalstructural transition takes place at P c ≈ 11 GPa, above which HTSC emerges gradually on further compression. The superconducting transition temperatures at 18–20 GPa reach $T$ $^{onset}_{c}$ = $82.5$ $K$ and $T$ $^{zero}_{c}$ = $60$ $K$, which are the highest values, to our knowledge, among known nickelate superconductors. Importantly, bulk HTSC was testified by detecting clear diamagnetic signals below about 75 K with appreciable superconducting shielding volume fractions at a pressure of above 15 GPa. Further, our results not only resolve the existing controversies but also provide directions for exploring bulk HTSC in the bilayer nickelates.

Magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1–x) Ga 2x O 4

CuAl 2 O 4 is a ternary oxide spinel with Cu 2+ ions (s = 1/2) primarily populating the A-site diamond sublattice. The compound is reported to display evidence of spin glass behavior but possess a non-frozen magnetic ground state below the transition temperature. On the other hand, the spinel CuGa 2 O 4 displays spin glass behavior at ~ 2.5 K with Cu 2+ ions more readily tending to the B-site pyrochlore sublattice. Therefore, we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1-x) Ga 2x O 4 examining the evolution of the magnetic behavior as Al 3+ is replaced with a much larger Ga 3+ ion. Our results show that the Cu 2+ ions tend to migrate from tetrahedral to octahedral sites as the Ga 3+ ion concentration increases, resulting in a concomitant change in the glassy magnetic properties of the solution. Results indicate glassy behavior for much of the solution with a general trend towards decreasing magnetic frustration as the Cu 2+ ion shifts to the B-site. However, the x = 0.1 and 0.2 members of the system do not show glassy behavior down to our measurement limit (1.9 K) suggesting a delayed spin glass transition. We suggest that these two members are additional candidates for investigation to access highly frustrated exotic quantum states.

A heterogeneous iridium single-atom-site catalyst for highly regioselective carbenoid O–H bond insertion

Transition-metal-catalysed carbenoid insertion of hydroxyl groups represents a robust and versatile method to forge C–O bonds. Achieving site-selective functionalization of alcohols using this transformation has undoubted synthetic value but remains challenging. Here we report a strategy for selective carbenoid O–H insertion that exploits an engineered heterogeneous iridium single-atom catalyst, thus providing opportunities for organic transformations by merging material science and catalysis. This catalytic protocol delivers excellent selectivities (up to 99:1) for the functionalization of aliphatic over phenolic O–H bonds, whereas the analogous homogeneous catalyst, Ir(ttp)COCl (ttp = 5,10,15,20-tetra-p-tolylporphyrinato), provided modest preferences. Density-functional-theory calculations suggest that the site-selectivity derives from the lower oxidation state of the iridium metal centre in the heterogeneous catalyst and its impact on the absorption energies of the reactants. These results showcase an example of a heterogeneous single-atom catalyst providing superior site-selectivity and provide a complementary strategy to address challenges in catalysis for organic synthesis. Photophysics of O-band and transition metal color centers in monolithic silicon for quantum communications

Color centers in the O-band (1260–1360 nm) are crucial for realizing long-coherence quantum network nodes in memory-assisted quantum communications. However, only a limited number of O-band color centers have been thoroughly explored in silicon hosts as spin-photon interfaces. This study explores and compares two promising O-band color centers in silicon for high-fidelity spin-photon interfaces: T and *Cu (transition metal) centers. During T center generation process, we observed the formation and dissolution of other color centers, including the copper-silver related centers with a doublet line around 1312 nm (*Cu$^0_n$), near the optical fiber zero dispersion wavelength (around 1310 nm). We then investigated the photophysics of both T and *Cu centers, focusing on their emission spectra and spin properties. The *Cu$^0_0$ line under a 0.5 T magnetic field demonstrated a 25% broadening, potentially due to spin degeneracy, suggesting that this center can be a promising alternative to T centers.

Probing polarization-tunable sub-terahertz spin pumping in bimodal α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is an insulating antiferromagnet possessing a room temperature canted phase induced by the super-exchange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), resulting in enhanced spin pumping and spin transport over uniaxial antiferromagnets. In this work we resonantly excite the quasi-ferromagnetic (acoustic) and purely antiferromagnetic (optical) spin-dynamical modes in bulk and thin-film heterostructures of α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt at room temperature, inducing inverse-spin-Hall-voltages up to 255 GHz. Following recent measurements of optical-mode spin-pumping in α-Fe 2 O 3 , we observe a novel and exotic microwave polarization mapping along with amplified spin-charge conversion in the optical branch and discuss the implications of layer thickness on acoustic and optical spin-modes. The results provide a deeper understanding of spin-wave selection rules for canted antiferromagnets and their potential use in nanoscale terahertz spintronics.

Negative thermal expansion and the role of hybridization in perovskite-type PbTiO 3 -Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5) O 3

PbTiO 3 -BiMeO 3 ferroelectrics have attracted much attention due to not only their extremely large polarization and piezoelectricity but also their controllable thermal expansion. In this study, we present a new binary system of (1 - x)PbTiO 3 -xBi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 possessing large tetragonality and enhanced spontaneous polarization. Interestingly, a combination of near zero thermal expansion and negative thermal expansion over a temperature range of RT to T C (~550 °C) has been observed in tetragonal 0.85PbTiO 3 -0.15Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 . The comprehensive structure analysis addressed that the abnormal thermal expansion is coupled to the spontaneous volume ferroelectrostriction. Moreover, the chemical bonding investigation by a maximum entropy method further attests that the covalent hybridization of Pb/Bi–O bonds plays a vital role in the improved ferroelectricity and interacts with thermal vibration to dominate the crossover from positive to negative thermal expansion. fINALLY, The present studies would give direct evidence to verify the theoretical calculations and could be extended to reveal the nature of thermal expansion in ferroelectrics.

Negative and zero thermal expansion in α-(Cu 2-x Znx)V 2 O 7 solid solutions

Negative or zero thermal expansion (NTE or ZTE) of materials is intriguing for controllable thermal expansion. In this work, we report a series of orthorhombic α-Cu 2- x Zn x V 2 O 7 ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2), in which the volumetric coefficients of thermal expansion are successfully tuned from -10.19 × 10 -6 K -1 to -1.58 × 10 -6 K -1 in the temperature range of 100–475 K by increasing the content of Zn 2+ . It has been revealed that the transverse vibrations of oxygen bonded with vanadium are dominant in the contraction of the bc plane, leading to the overall volume NTE in α-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 . The introduction of Zn 2+ densifies the crystal structure, which is presumed to suppress the space of transverse vibrations and results in the ZTE in α-Cu 1.8 Zn 0.2 V 2 O 7 . This work presents an effective method to realize ZTE in anisotropic framework systems.

Energetics of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on alkaline earth metal doped TiO 2

The process of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on the surface of nano-oxide semiconductors is important in the overall performance of artificial photosynthesis and other applications. In this study, we explored the thermodynamics of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on TiO 2 as a function of surface chemistry. We applied gas adsorption calorimetry to investigate the energetics of adsorption of those molecules on the surface of anatase nanoparticles. In an attempt to increase TiO 2 surface affinity to CO 2 and H 2 O, TiO 2 was doped with alkaline earth metals (MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO) by manipulating the chemical synthesis. Adsorption studies using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy at different temperatures indicate that due to the segregation of alkaline earth metals on the surface of TiO 2 nanoparticles, both CO 2 and subsequent H2O adsorption amounts could be increased. CO 2 adsorbs in two different manners, forming carbonates which can be removed at temperatures lower than 700 °C, and a more stable linear adsorption that remains even at 700 °C. Additionally to the surface energetic effects, doping also increased specific surface area, resulting in further improvement in net gas adsorption.

The optimal co-doping of SrFe 1-x Co x O 3-δ oxygen carriers in redox applications

Although the oxygen carrier SrCoO 3 has higher redox activity than SrFeO 3 , cobalt is both more expensive and scarcer than iron, which would hinder the wide implementation of SrCoO 3 . For these reasons, doping SrFeO 3 with Co is a potential compromise, benefitting the redox properties of SrFeO 3 , while still limiting the overall amount of cobalt being used. In this work, to find the optimal level of Co-doping, density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the Co-doping effect on the oxygen vacancy formation and oxygen migration in SrFe 1- x Co x O 3- δ ( x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5). Our findings show that the oxygen vacancy formation energies ( E f ) decrease with the increase of Co content resulting from the increased composition of the O-2p band at the Fermi level upon Co doping. In particular, the E f decreases nearly 0.5 eV between the x = 0 and x = 0.25 samples while E f only decreases 0.1 eV further as Co content is increased to x = 0.5. We obtain that x = 0.25 is an optimal cost/benefit ratio for Co doping, which is preserved at both low oxygen vacancy concentrations ( δ = 0.0625 values listed above) and at high concentrations of δ = 0.1875 and 0.375. Kinetically, the oxygen migration barrier has slight change upon Co doping due to the similar size of Co and Fe. Therefore, considering both redox activity and economics in reversible oxygen storage applications, x = 0.25 is suggested as the optimal Co-doping value in SrFe 1- x Co x O 3- δ .

Theoretical H + O 3 rate coefficients from ring polymer molecular dynamics on an accurate global potential energy surface: assessing experimental uncertainties

Thermal rate coefficients and kinetic isotope effects have been calculated for an important atmospheric reaction H/D + O 3 → OH/OD + O2 based on an accurate permutation invariant polynomial-neural network potential energy surface, using ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) and variational transition-state theory (VTST) with multidimensional tunneling. The RPMD approach yielded results that are generally in better agreement with experimental rate coefficients than the VTST and QCT ones, especially at low temperatures, attributable to its capacity to capture quantum effects such as tunneling and zero-point energy. Additionally, the theoretical results support one group of existing experiments over the other. In addition, rate coefficients for the D + O 3 → OD + O 2 reaction are also reported using the same methods, which will allow a stringent assessment of future experimental measurements, thus helping to reduce the uncertainty in the recommended rate coefficients of this reaction.

Characterizing the solid hydrolysis product, UF 4 (H 2 O) 2.5 , generated from neat water reactions with UF 4 at room temperature

Uranium tetrafluoride (UF 4 ) is an important intermediate in the production of UF 6 and uranium metal. Room temperature hydrolysis of UF 4 was investigated using a combination of Fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 19 F NMR), Raman and infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and microscopy measurements. UF 4 (H 2 O) 2.5 was identified as the primary solid hydrolysis product when anhydrous UF 4 was stirred in deionized water. Static NMR and 19 F magic angle spinning NMR measurements revealed that a small amount of uranyl fluoride can also form when anhydrous UF 4 is left in water, although this species comprises less than 5% of the total sample with the remaining parts being UF 4 (H 2 O) 2.5 . Since UF 4 is generally considered to be stable under ambient conditions, these findings mark the first time that a room temperature reaction between UF 4 and water has been detected and analyzed without interference from additional chemical reagents. The Raman characterization of UF 4 (H 2 O) 2.5 presented herein is the first on record. Since UF 4 is one of the most used intermediates during chemical conversion of uranium ore to uranium metal for nuclear fuel and weapons, the results presented herein are applicable to numerous nuclear science fields where solid state detection of uranium is of value, including nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear forensics, and environmental remediation.

Phonon confinement and interface lattice dynamics of ultrathin high- k rare earth sesquioxide films: the case of Eu 2 O 3 on YSZ(001)

The spatial confinement of atoms at surfaces and interfaces significantly alters the lattice dynamics of thin films, heterostructures and multilayers. Ultrathin films with high dielectric constants (high-k) are of paramount interest for applications as gate layers in current and future integrated circuits. Here we report a lattice dynamics study of high-k Eu 2 O 3 films with thicknesses of 21.3, 2.2, 1.3, and 0.8 nm deposited on YSZ(001). The Eu-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained from nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits broadening of the phonon peaks accompanied by up to a four-fold enhancement of the number of low-energy states compared to the ab initio calculated PDOS of a perfect Eu 2 O 3 crystal. Our analysis demonstrates that while the former effect reflects the reduced phonon lifetimes observed in thin films due to scattering from lattice defects, the latter phenomenon arises from an ultrathin EuO layer formed between the thin Eu 2 O 3 film and the YSZ(001) substrate. Thus, our work uncovers another potential source of vibrational anomalies in thin films and multilayers, which has to be cautiously considered.

In situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation enhances the efficiency of CuIn(S,Se) 2 solar cells prepared from molecular-ink solutions

Here, we report an efficiency enhancement of solution-processed CuIn(S,Se) 2 (CISSe) thin film solar cells via in situ incorporation of Al 2 O 3 . These films were produced using inks containing CuCl, InCl 3 , AlNO 3 (Al/Al + In: 0.1) and thiourea dissolved in methanol. After spin coating of these solutions in air, samples were subjected to a selenization process. Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profiling analysis showed that Al is evenly distributed throughout the bulk of the film. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that AlNO 3 precursor reacted with oxygen to form nanosized amorphous Al 2 O 3 grains located within the bulk and grain boundaries of CISSe, as well as at both the top and bottom interfaces. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.6% (JS C : 35.8 mA cm –2 , V OC : 518 mV, FF: 62.2%, no anti-reflection coating) was achieved with Al–CISSe solar cell devices integrated with CdS (chemical bath deposition, thickness: 80 nm) and ZnO/ITO bilayers (sputtered, thickness: 300 nm). The average PCE (10.1%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 34.5 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 491 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 59.8%) was nearly 4% (absolute) higher than that measured on CISSe baseline cells fabricated from solutions without Al ($\langle$PCE$\rangle$ = 6.4%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 32.8 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 410 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 47.3%). This in situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation is speculated to play a role in the enhancement of the VOC and FF of the devices through passivation of defects in CISSe reducing interface and bulk recombination, as evidenced by a reduced defect density and an increased activation energy of the dominant recombination mechanism from capacitance and temperature-dependent VOC measurements, respectively.

Thermodynamic guiding principles of high-capacity phase transformation materials for splitting H 2 O and CO 2 by thermochemical looping

Here, thermochemical looping splitting of water and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with greenhouse-gas-free (GHG-free) energy has the potential to help address the Gt-scale GHG emissions challenge. Reaction thermodynamics largely contributes to the main bottlenecks of cost reduction for thermochemical looping water/CO 2 splitting cycle. Here, we analyze thermodynamic driving forces in such cycles with two-phase ternary ferrites as model systems. We find that cation configurational entropy chiefly determines the change of partial molar entropy with oxygen stoichiometry. In addition, our phase diagram analysis accurately predicts the optimal Fe ratio for maximal water/CO 2 splitting capacity in thermal reduction and in chemical reduction based cycles, underlining the significance of phase boundary positions. With chemical reduction, >10% CO 2 conversion and high oxygen exchange capacity can both be achieved. Furthermore, our reduced Gibbs free energy model illustrates critical thermodynamic factors that influence the water/CO 2 splitting capacity. Our research reveals the thermodynamic driving forces underlying the unconventional high-capacity Fe-poor ferrites, further explained via phase diagrams of Fe–Co–O, Fe–Ni–O and Fe–Mg–O. Future materials improvements can be guided by our reduced Gibbs free energy model.
