Extending Grid Computing to Remote Locations

NASA Glenn Research Center, in cooperation with NASA Ames and geologists from the University of Cincinnati and Bowling Green State University has extended the computational capabilities of the information Power Grid to remote research sites. The combination of satellite (EOS) data acquisition and the IPG processing provides geologists with the ability to identify the key mineralogical features at the research site. The underlying connectivity for this research environment is provided by the Numerical Research and Education Network (NREN) using a combination of terrestrial and mobile satellite-based networking solutions. Our approach not only speeds the process of scientific discovery, but also serves as a simple demonstration of NASA's capacity for geological classification and exploration of remote sites such as the Martian surface. The NASA Glenn Demonstrations combines satellite (EOS) data acquisition and the computational capabilities or the Information Power Grid (IPG) to provide geologists with the ability to identify key mineralogical features in near real-time of an area in study. This capability could someday allow geological classification of rocks and minerals of remote sites such as the Martian surface.

Integrated Nondestructive Evaluation and Finite Element Analysis Predicts Crack Location and Shape

This study describes the finite-element analyses and the NDE modality undertaken on two flywheel rotors that were spun to burst speed. Computed tomography and dimensional measurements were used to nondestructively evaluate the rotors before and/or after they were spun to the first crack detection. Computed tomography data findings of two- and three-dimensional crack formation were used to conduct finite-element (FEA) and fracture mechanics analyses. A procedure to extend these analyses to estimate the life of these components is also outlined. NDE-FEA results for one of the rotors are presented in the figures. The stress results, which represent the radial stresses in the rim, clearly indicate that the maximum stress region is within the section defined by the computed tomography scan. Furthermore, the NDE data correlate well with the FEA results. In addition, the measurements reported show that the NDE and FEA data are in parallel.

The locations of cosmic explosions

When massive stars exhaust their fuel they collapse and often produce the extraordinarily bright explosions known as core-collapse supernovae. Recently, it has become apparent that stellar collapse can power the even more brilliant relativistic explosions known as long-duration gamma-ray bursts. In some cases, a gamma-ray burst and a supernova have been observed from the same event. One would thus expect that gamma-ray bursts and supernovae should be found in similar environments. Here we show that this expectation is wrong. Using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the host galaxies of long-duration gamma-ray bursts and core-collapse supernovae, we demonstrate that while the distribution of the supernovae in their hosts traces the blue light of young stars, the gamma-ray bursts are much more concentrated on the very brightest regions of their hosts. Furthermore, the host galaxies of the gamma-ray bursts are significantly fainter and more irregular than the hosts of the supernovae. Together these results suggest that long-duration gamma-ray bursts are associated with the very most massive stars and may be restricted to galaxies of limited chemical evolution. Our results directly imply that long-duration gamma-ray bursts are relatively rare in galaxies such as our own Milky Way.

Followup to Columbia Investigation: Reinforced Carbon/Carbon From the Breach Location in the Wing Leading Edge Studied

Initial estimates on the temperature and conditions of the breach in the Space Shuttle Columbia's wing focused on analyses of the slag deposits. These deposits are complex mixtures of the reinforced carbon/carbon (RCC) constituents, insulation material, and wing structural materials. Identification of melted/solidified Cerachrome insulation (Thermal Ceramics, Inc., Augusta, GA) indicated that the temperatures at the breach had exceeded 1760 C.

A Search for Early Optical Emission at Gamma-Ray Burst Locations by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI)

The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) views nearly every point on the sky once every 102 minutes and can detect point sources as faint as R approx. 10th magnitude. Therefore, SMEI can detect or provide upper limits for the optical afterglow from gamma-ray bursts in the tens of minutes after the burst when different shocked regions may emit optically. Here we provide upper limits for 58 bursts between 2003 February and 2005 April.

Epicenter location by analysis for interictal spikes

The MEG recording is a quick and painless process that requires no surgery. This approach has the potential to save time, reduce patient discomfort, and eliminates a painful and potentially dangerous surgical step in the treatment procedure.

Practical Methods for Estimating Software Systems Fault Content and Location

Over the past several years, we have developed techniques to discriminate between fault-prone software modules and those that are not, to estimate a software system's residual fault content, to identify those portions of a software system having the highest estimated number of faults, and to estimate the effects of requirements changes on software quality.

Locating Geometric Primitives by Pruning the Parameter Space

This paper examines the extraction of geometric primitives from two- and three-dimensional image data. The geometric primitives are represented by parametric manifolds in the image space, such as circles, planes, and cylinders.

Status of the international GPS service in terms of co-location and local ties

The IGS network today consists of 364 stations managed by about, 100 different agencies worldwide. The RINEX observations are contributed to the IGS Data Centers, which permanently archive the data and make it freely available to all users. The primary customer of the data set is the IGS Analysis Centers, which acquire the data for generation of precise GPS products such as ephemerides, clocks, earth orientation parameters, and station position and velocities.
