High Temperature Moderator Cladding Report

The hydrogen permeation system at LANL has been modified and improved to perform high temperature testing of metals and metal/ceramic samples. This will allow us to demonstrate the ability to reduce hydrogen permeation for microreactor materials. For this program, two metals have been chosen for analysis, stainless steel as a base metal and TZM based on its high temperature properties and anticipated higher H permeation resistance. Samples have been fabricated and coated with Al 2 O 3 via atomic layer deposition in order to evaluate the potential to reduce hydrogen permeation with a thin layer ceramic coating. Current efforts include literature review of systems and sample fabrication to demonstrate feasibility, future work will focus on collecting hydrogen permeation data.

DRiFT - Release 1.0.0 Organic Scintillators

DRiFT (a Detector Response Function Toolkit) is LANL-developed software that postprocesses output from the extensively validated radiation transport code, MCNP [1], and generates realistic nuclear instrumentation response. DRiFT is designed to be flexible, enabling users to specify detector type and many experimental settings, as well as accommodating the addition of their own desired features. Although DRiFT development has included scintillator [2], gas [3], and semiconductor features [4], the focus of this release is on organic scintillator and associated capabilities. Organic scintillators are widely used in the areas of nuclear safeguards and nuclear non-proliferation efforts [5, 6]. DRiFT has several diagnostic and detector physics features relevant to detailed scintillator simulations including: tracking source particle information, scintillation light production, the effects of PMT quantum efficiency and gain, and digitizer settings. Users can select responses from many scintillator and PMT types supported natively by DRiFT, or add their own by following the instructions in this document. We acknowledge that DRiFT is under active development, bug reports and general questions and comments should be directed to Madison Andrews, madison@lanl.gov. This manual is divided into four parts: I) An overview of DRiFT, including how to obtain and install the executable, II) A description of the detector physics related to scintillators available, III) a description of more general DRiFT features the user may find useful, and IV) a description of the test suite and examples made available with the code release.

Corrosion Testing Proposal -1: Assessment of the Corrosion of Stainless Steel Subjected to an Aqueous Solution of Hydrochloric Acid

This corrosion-test proposal outlines the methods to promote rapid pitting corrosion on various pitting resistant stainless steels under controlled conditions. This study can be performed in-whole or in- part as the Corrosion Working Group (CWG) leadership of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) deems pertinent. This proposal is in response to CWG’s need to understand the mechanisms and the possible detrimental failure of the 316L SAVY (an acronym that represents the first initial of the four co-developers, Stone, Anderson, Veirs, Yarbro) 4000 container design currently in service. This detrimental failure evolved from a question that the CWG arrived to by consensus as “What is the critical pit depth that would comprise the design wall-strength of the SAVY-4000?”

225 Ac/ 213 Bi Generator Based on Millifluidics Controlled Electrodeposition

Radioisotopes provide both diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatments for cancer and other diseases. In the US, millions of radioisotope doses are given to patients per year. Radiopharmaceutical generators are widely used to provide such short-lived medical radioisotopes in a clinical setting. These generators work by exploiting chemical differences in a parent/daughter isotope relationship. Actinium-225 (half-life 10 d) is used to provide clinically useful amounts of daughter isotopes 213 Bi (46 m). An integrated millifluidic 225 Ac/ 213 Bi radiopharmaceutical generator device was engineered to produce 213 Bi labeled biomolecules. Using recent LANL successes in additive manufacturing of small-scale fluidic devices, a disposable device was developed that integrates three steps for the production of 213 Bi labeled antibodies: 1) 213 Bi separation from 225 Ac parent, 2) 213 Bi antibody labeling, and 3) purification of the labelled antibody.

External Release of Organic Scintillator DRiFT Software - Technology Evaluation and Demonstration Project Accomplishments [Slides]

Overview and Objectives: DRiFT post processes radiation transport output from MCNP, and generates realistic nuclear instrumentation response; Organic scintillator response has been developed, tested, and validated with measurements, these instruments are widely used in nuclear safeguards. At the beginning of this project, DRiFT was only available to LANL employees with access to yellow High Performance Computing clusters. Additionally, there are many complicated external software dependencies. Our TED project request proposed using funds to: Comment and clean up code, friendly testing, generating test suites and examples; Expansion of scintillator types natively supported by DRiFT; External release of DRiFT accompanied by documentation. We accomplished all objectives (and many others), they are highlighted in these slides.

Schema Elements for Granta Annual Report

Granta: Materials Intelligence, also known as Granta:MI or Granta, is a commercial database software by Ansys, Inc. that is utilized by the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to organize and store materials data relevant to the complex. The software was first adopted by individual sites in the early 2000’s, but in FY20, enterprise-wide licensing was purchased for the NSE by the Product Realization Integrated Digital Enterprise (PRIDE) program. Currently, there are 375 floating licenses available for users at all sites. There are also two shared instances of Granta; a classified production instance on the Enterprise Secure Network (ESN) and an unclassified development instance. Additionally, some individual sites such as Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) host their own local Granta instances on their own networks that, in general, only their employees can access.

Multi-INT Signature Collection and Exploitation for Security Los Alamos LDRD Report

This project demonstrates the feasibility of a 2-D passive tracking capability for ground-based and airborne moving sources using multi-INT signal processing of acoustic and seismic signals. We leveraged the recent DDSTE-supported investment in rapid deployable sensors (the Los Alamos Rapid-deployable Sensor Array—LARSA), and used uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) as a data source. Moving source types are characterized by their variability with time (exemplified but not limited to the Doppler shift of a passing vehicle) and the signatures used for detection should have similar characteristics. We have demonstrated that time-varying sensor signatures (TVS) combined with time-stable sensor signatures provide a more complete understanding of moving source behavior and drive towards path prediction. Importantly, we have collected a new, relevant LANL dataset of moving sources (small UAV flights and vehicle movement), developed new signatures, and demonstrated a capability to identify, track and forecast the position of TVS.

Multi-INT Signature Collection and Exploitation for Security: Improving Discrimination, Analyses, and Passive Tracking Capabilities for Time- and Distance-Varying Signatures in the Seismoacoustic Regime

This project demonstrates the feasibility of a passive tracking capability for ground-based and airborne moving sources using multiple information streams from acoustic and seismic signals. These moving source types are characterized by their variability with time and distance (exemplified but not limited to the familiar doppler shift of a passing vehicle) and the signatures used for detection should have similar characteristics. We have demonstrated that time-varying sensor signatures (TVS) combined with time-stable sensor signatures provide a more complete understanding of moving source behavior. Importantly, we have collected a new, relevant LANL dataset of moving sources (small uncrewed aerial vehicle flights and ground vehicle movement), developed new signatures, and demonstrated the capability to identify, track and forecast the position of these moving sources.

Strength models for stainless steel 304L alloys

This report provides nominal, weak and strong calibrations of Preston- Tonks-Wallace (PTW) plasticity model [1] parameters for stainless steel 304L alloys. The data sets shown indicate that for these alloys, the material’s prove- nance plays an important role in accurate characterization. First we provide a parameter set fit to compression-tested annealed samples, both quasistatic (QS) and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB), from the MST-8 group at LANL within the last year. Then we compare simulations using the FLAG hydrocode [2], with this and other parameter sets, to data from a Taylor cylinder impact test performed within the same group around 2013.

IER-539 CED-1: Preliminary Design of a New Horizontal Split Table

This report presents the preliminary design (CED-1) of IER-539, focused on a new Horizontal Split Table (HST) critical assembly machine. The Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) funds critical experiment R&D and its Mission and Vision document identifies a long-standing technical gap of a general purpose HST. HSTs have historically been used for experiments that are impractical to assemble on a vertical lift machine (VLM), usually due to their large physical size or weight. While many HSTs were historically employed in the US (including at LLNL), there are currently no surviving HSTs in the US. While there are two critical experiments facilities remaining in the US, the National Critical Experiments Research Center (NCERC) operated by LANL and the Critical Experiments Facility (CX) operated by SNL, these facilities are not equipped with a general purpose HST. There are a number of experiment designs that require an HST, including needs for Defense Programs and Nuclear Energy. Lack of an HST constraints the national ability to perform large and heavy experiments. Large footprints are needed to successfully create mockup experiments for advanced reactors (mock-up cold critical reactor cores, which is a urgent need for new reactor designs using novel materials and longer cycle lengths), to create solution experiments in lattices, or to test nuclear data of heavy metals. A new HST is a vital piece of criticality experiment infrastructure that would allow for the conduct of integral critical experiments to address needs in the nuclear criticality safety, nuclear data, and other DOE stakeholder communities.
