Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering Cross Sections at Medium Energies

The weak interactions of neutrinos with other Standard Model particles are well described within the Standard Model of particle physics. However, modern accelerator-based neutrino experiments employ nuclei as targets, where neutrinos interact with bound nucleons, turning a seemingly simple electroweak process into a complex many-body problem in nuclear physics. At the time of writing this Encyclopedia of Particle Physics chapter, neutrino-nucleus interactions remain one of the leading sources of systematic uncertainty in accelerator-based neutrino oscillation measurements. This chapter provides a pedagogical overview of neutrino interactions with nuclei in the medium-energy regime, spanning a few hundred MeV to several GeV. It introduces the fundamental electroweak formalism, outlines the dominant interaction mechanisms - including quasielastic scattering, resonance production, and deep inelastic scattering - and discusses how nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, nucleon-nucleon correlations, meson-exchange currents, and final-state interactions modify observable cross sections. The chapter also presents a brief survey of the foundational and most widely used theoretical models for neutrino-nucleus cross sections, together with an overview of current and upcoming accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments that are shaping the field. Rather than targeting experts, this chapter serves as a primer for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and early-career researchers entering the field. It provides a concise foundation for understanding neutrino-nucleus scattering, its relevance to oscillation experiments, and its broader connections to both particle and nuclear physics.

Measurement of cross sections for mesonless charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with and without protons at MicroBooNE

urrent and upcoming neutrino experiments at Fermilab will rely on liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) as the primary detector technology. To reach the ambitious precision required for their physics goals, a detailed understanding of neutrino-argon scattering must be achieved. For the present Short-Baseline Neutrino program, the dominant reaction channel is charged-current muon neutrino interactions leading to mesonless final states with and without protons. Using a large data set of neutrino interactions recorded by the MicroBooNE LArTPC detector at Fermilab, we report progress towards new measurements of differential cross sections in this channel. The analysis leverages multiple event reconstruction paradigms and observables specifically chosen to maximize sensitivity to nuclear effects of interest for improving neutrino scattering models. Related previous cross-section results from MicroBooNE and a preview of what to expect from the new analysis will both be featured in this presentation.

Inclusive and differential cross-sections for dilepton $t\overline{t}$ production measured in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

Differential and double-differential distributions of kinematic variables of leptons from decays of top-quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) are measured using the full LHC Run 2 data sample collected with the ATLAS detector. The data were collected at a pp collision energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 . The measurements use events containing an oppositely charged e μ pair and b-tagged jets. The results are compared with predictions from several Monte Carlo generators. While no prediction is found to be consistent with all distributions, a better agreement with measurements of the lepton p T distributions is obtained by reweighting the $t\bar{t}$ sample so as to reproduce the top-quark p T distribution from an NNLO calculation. The inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section is measured as well, both in a fiducial region and in the full phase-space. The total inclusive cross-section is found to be $σ_{t\bar{t}}=$ 829 ± 1 (stat) ± 13 (syst) ± 8 (lumi) ± 2 (beam) pb, where the uncertainties are due to statistics, systematic effects, the integrated luminosity and the beam energy. This is in excellent agreement with the theoretical expectation.

Simultaneous Unbinned Differential Cross-Section Measurement of Twenty-Four Z+jets Kinematic Observables with the ATLAS Detector

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins. In this analysis, a machine learning method called omnifold is used to produce a simultaneous measurement of twenty-four Z +jets observables using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Unlike any previous fiducial differential cross-section measurement, this result is presented unbinned as a dataset of particle-level events, allowing for flexible reuse in a variety of contexts and for new observables to be constructed from the twenty-four measured observables.

Asymptotic form of the charge-exchange cross section in three-body rearrangement collisions

A three-body general-type rearrangement collision is considered in which the initial and final bound states are described by hydrogen-like wave functions. It is shown that the charge-exchange amplitude in the first Born approximation can be expanded at all incident energies in terms of the inverse powers of the principal quantum number (n). By expanding the exchange amplitude in this way, it is demonstrated conclusively that the cross section for capture into the s, p, and d states as well as for the sum over all the angular-momentum states is proportional to 1/n-cubed plus terms proportional to higher inverse odd powers of n. It is found that the low-lying levels cannot be scaled to the 1/n-cubed law irrespective of the value of the incident energy except in the case of capture into the s states in accordance with the Oppenheimer-Brinkman-Kramers approximation. Zeros and minima in the differential cross sections are given in the limit of high principal quantum number for electron capture by protons from atomic hydrogen and for positronium formation by proton-atomic hydrogen collisions.

Measurement of charged-current $\nu_\mu$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ cross sections on hydrocarbon in a shallow inelastic scattering region

This MINERvA analysis is the first neutrino and antineutrino study of a shallow inelastic scattering region, which is the transition region between resonant production and deep inelastic scattering processes. This transition is explicitly included in this study by expanding the scope of shallow inelastic scattering to include not only the mainly lower-$Q^2$ nonresonant pion production but also the kinematic region where pion production off quarks within the nucleon becomes significant with $Q^2$ below the onset of the deep-inelastic scattering region defined in this analysis. To reduce the resonance background the kinematic region 1.5 $<$$W$$<$ 2 GeV/$c^2$ was chosen. In addition to the inclusive differential cross section measurements, to emphasize SIS interactions off quarks within the nucleon a sample with $Q^2$$\geq$ 1 GeV/$c^2$ was also analyzed. The measurements of one-dimensional cross sections at $\left\langle E_\nu \right\rangle \sim 6$ GeV on hydrocarbon of $Q^2$, Bjorken x and muon momentum variables are compared with modified predictions from the GENIE 2 neutrino generator as well as predictions of other neutrino simulators GiBUU, NEUT, NuWro and an alternative GENIE 3 version. Significant discrepancies both in shape and magnitude between measurements and neutrino simulator predictions of all variables have been observed.

Measuring the Multi-Neutron Antineutrino Cross Section at Low Charged Hadron Energy in MINERvA

Current and future accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments need neutrino interaction models with smaller systematic uncertainties to resolve much of delta CP phase space. Final state interactions (FSI) and scattering off of correlated nuclei (2p2h) are poorly understood processes that currently contribute large uncertainties to leading models. These processes have proven difficult to study because they often produce relatively low energy nucleons. Protons up to about 100 MeV are below the detection threshold of some accelerator neutrino detectors, and neutrons are usually discounted as undetectable. This poster presents a measurement of the multi-neutron antineutrino cross section at low available energy using the MINERvA detector at Fermilab. This interaction channel is particularly sensitive to FSI and 2p2h interactions. A sideband-driven background constraint that greatly reduces uncertainties on the result will be presented. The measured cross section is compared to GENIE v3 models with different FSI treatments and the SuSA model's 2p2h predictions.

An upper limit for the absorption cross section of the oxygen C 3 Delta u - a 1 Delta g transition

Frederick and Cicerone (1985) have proposed that photodissociation of O2 (a 1 Delta g) by the process O2 (a 1 Delta g) + h-nu + O2 (C 3 Delta u) to O(3 P) + O(3 P) may be a major source of odd oxygen in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere. They argued that, since the process is forbidden only by change in the spin multiplicity, it might have been a cross section intermediate between a fully allowed and a strictly forbidden transition, i.e., 10 to the -20th to 10 to the -19th sq cm near 250 nm. In order to test this proposal, absorption by O2 (a 1 Delta g) has been measured in the 190-290 nm wavelength region. No absorption above the detection limit could be observed for O2 (a 1 Delta g) concentrations of (4-7) x 10 to the 15th/cu cm. An upper limit of 8 x 10 to the -22 sq cm was calculated for the cross section.

Hadron-Argon Cross-Section Measurements at Protodune

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation experiment designed to measure neutrino oscillations with unprecedented precision, specifically seeking to identify CP violation in the lepton sector. DUNE utilizes the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) as its core detecting technology, offering high-resolution imaging to reconstruct neutrino interactions on argon. A primary challenge in this reconstruction is the modeling of hadronic final-state interactions (FSI), where hadrons produced at the initial interaction vertex undergo further scattering before escaping the nucleus. In this thesis, I utilize the ProtoDUNE-SP detector and its 1~GeV/$c$ hadron beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform to present the first measurements of total inelastic $\pi^+$-argon and proton-argon cross sections in an energy regime critical to DUNE. I detail the development and validation of the ``slicing method'', which utilizes a kiloton-scale LArTPC to extract hadron-argon cross sections. These measurements provide an indispensable benchmark for informing DUNE's FSI modeling, and our results show no significant tension with current model predictions. Additionally, I study the impact of FSI modeling on DUNE’s sensitivity to oscillation parameters. This study demonstrates that variations in FSI models may be degenerate with oscillation features, highlighting the necessity of using direct experimental data to refine interaction models. Finally, I provide an outlook on related studies that will further contribute to this effort, supporting the ambitious physics goals of upcoming neutrino oscillation programs including DUNE.

Precise measurement of nuclear interaction cross sections towards neutron-skin determination with R 3 B

The R 3 B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment as a major instrument of the NUSTAR collaboration for the research facility FAIR in Darmstadt is designed for kinematically complete studies of reactions with high-energy radioactive beams. Part of the broad physics program of R 3 B is to constrain the asymmetry term in the nuclear equation-of-state and hence improve the description of highly asymmetric nuclear matter (e.g., in neutron stars). For a precise determination of the neutron-skin thickness – an observable which is directly correlated with the symmetry energy in theoretical calculations – by measuring absolute fragmentation cross sections, it is essential to quantify the uncertainty and challenge the reaction model under stable conditions. During the successful FAIR Phase-0 campaign of R 3 B, we precisely measured the energy dependence of total interaction cross sections in 12 C + 12 C collisions, for a direct comparison with calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory.

Effect of the Mott cross section on the determination of the charge of ultraheavy cosmic rays from emulsion tracks

Energy deposition due to secondary electrons is calculated as a function of distance from the axis of the track of a heavy ion. The calculation incorporates the empirical formulas of Kobetich and Katz (1968) for delta-ray energy dissipation. Both the Mott and Born-approximation expressions for the delta-ray energy distributions are used, and the results are compared. The energy deposition projected along a line perpendicular to the track is also calculated. These results are used to estimate the effect that the use of the Mott cross section would have in the interpretation of photometric measurements on emulsion tracks of trans-iron cosmic-ray particles. It is shown that the use of 50 keV as a characteristic track-formation electron energy to estimate the effect of the Mott cross section systematically overestimates charge as derived from emulsions for Z greater than 20.

Measurements of ${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross sections and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} $) collisions, ${{\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow ({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*)({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 2\ell 2\ell '}$, where ${\ell ,\ell ' = {\mathrm{e}}}$ or ${{\upmu }}$, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, collected during 2016–2018. The ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross section, $\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region ${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$ is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ and ${{\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \gamma }$ couplings.

Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of p T, γ1(2) > 40 (30) GeV for the leading (sub-leading) photon. The differential cross sections as functions of several observables for the diphoton system are measured and compared with theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and fixed-order calculations. The QCD predictions from next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations and multi-leg merged calculations are able to describe the measured integrated and differential cross sections within uncertainties, whereas lower-order calculations show significant deviations, demonstrating that higher-order perturbative QCD corrections are crucial for this process. The resummed predictions with parton showers additionally provide an excellent description of the low transverse-momentum regime of the diphoton system.

EFT for soft drop double differential cross section

We develop a factorization framework to compute the double differential cross section in soft drop groomed jet mass and groomed jet radius. We describe the effective theories in the large, intermediate, and small groomed jet radius regions defined by the interplay of the jet mass and the groomed jet radius measurement. As an application we present the NLL' results for the perturbative moments that are related to the coefficients C 1 and C 2 that specify the leading hadronization corrections up to three universal parameters. We compare our results with Monte Carlo simulations and a calculation using the coherent branching method.
