Gas flows in S-E binary systems of galaxies

Tidal interaction between the galaxies in binary systems leads to important consequences. Some peculiarities in galactic morphology as well as the transfer of matter from one galaxy to another may be due to this factor. In particular, gas flows in intergalactic space may be formed. Such flows enriching one component with gas from the other may play a substantial role in the evolution of mixed (S-E) pairs. One can mention several facts corroborating the possibility of the gas transfer from the spiral to the elliptical galaxy. High HI content (10(exp 7) to 10(exp 9) solar mass) is detected in nearly 40 E galaxies (Bottinelli and Gougenheim, 1979; Knapp et al., 1985). Such galaxies are often members of pairs or of multiple systems including an S galaxy, which may be the source of gas (Smirnov and Komberg, 1980). Moreover, the gas kinematics and its distribution also indicate an external origin for this gas (Knapp et al., 1985). In many cases there is an outer gaseous disk. The directions of the disk and of stellar rotation don't always coincide (van Gorkom et al., 1985; Varnas et al., 1987). The galaxy colors in S-E pairs are correlated (the Holmberg effect): bluer ellipticals have spiral components that are usually bluer (Demin et al., 1984). The fraction of E galaxies with emission lines (N sub em) in S-E pairs showing traces of tidal interaction is twice as large (N sub em approx. equals 0.24) as in pairs without interaction (N sub em approx. equals 0.12) (Sotnikova, 1988b). Since the presence of emission lines in a galaxy spectrum strongly depends on gas content, this fact also leads to the conclusion that ellipticals in interacting S-E pairs are enriched with gas. These facts may be considered as a serious indication of the existence of gas transfer. Hence, investigation of this process is of interest.

UV observations of x ray binaries

IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) has observed both high and low mass x ray binaries throughout its life. The UV spectra of high mass systems reveal the nature of the massive companion star and the effects of the x ray illumination of the stellar wind. In loss mass systems, the x ray illuminated disk or companion star dominates the UV light. System parameters and the characteristics of the accretion disk can be inferred.

Colliding stellar winds in O-type close binary systems

A study of the stellar wind properties of O-type close binary systems is presented. The main objective of this program was to search for colliding winds in four systems, AO Cas, iota Ori, Plaskett's star, and 29 UW CMa, through an examination of high dispersion UV spectra from IUE and optical spectra of the H alpha and He I lambda 6678 emission lines.

Second catalog of interferometric measurements of binary stars (McAlister and Hartkopf 1988): Documentation for the machine-readable version

The machine-readable version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center, is described. The catalog is a compilation of measurements of binary- and multiple-star systems obtained by speckle interferometric techniques; this version supersedes a previous edition of the catalog published in 1985. Stars that have been examined for multiplicity with negative results are included, in which case upper limits for the separation are given. The second version is expanded from the first in that a file of newly resolved systems and six cross-index files of alternate designations are included. The data file contains alternate identifications for the observed systems, epochs of observation, reported errors in position angles and separation, and bibliographical references.

Physical parameters for three chromospherically active binaries

High-resolution spectroscopy, photoelectric radial-velocity observations, and uvby photometry are reported for three southern late-type binaries. Data obtained at ESO during 1988 and 1989 are combined with previously published results in extensive tables and graphs and analyzed in detail. HD 57853 is found to be at least a triple system with period 122.2 d and components of strongly differing luminosity; the primary component rotates rapidly (v sin i = 22 km/sec) and has an age of about 80 Myr. HD 114630 comprises two components of equal mass (at least 1.07 solar mass) and luminosity, with orbital inclination about 90 deg, period 4.23 d, rotation v sin i = about 17 km/sec, and age about 2 Gyr. HD 119285 has rotational period 12.031 d, with a K2IVe primary rotating at v sin i = 6.5 km/sec and a very low-mass secondary; its X-ray surface flux is estimated as 5.5 x 10 to the 6th erg/sq cm sec.

Stimulated Raman-scattering threshold behavior of binary mixture micrometer-sized droplets

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from binary liquid mixture micrometer-sized droplets irradiated by nanosecond laser pulses exhibits previously unreported features. SRS emission at wavelength shifts corresponding to combination frequencies of the individual component Stokes shifts are observed in droplets but not in bulk mixtures. Furthermore, droplet SRS thresholds are determined by component refractive indices and concentrations, in contrast to bulk thresholds, for which self-focusing likely plays a dominant role.

Ground states of partially connected binary neural networks

Neural networks defined by outer products of vectors over (-1, 0, 1) are considered. Patterns over (-1, 0, 1) define by their outer products partially connected neural networks consisting of internally strongly connected, externally weakly connected subnetworks. Subpatterns over (-1, 1) define subnetworks, and their combinations that agree in the common bits define permissible words. It is shown that the permissible words are locally stable states of the network, provided that each of the subnetworks stores mutually orthogonal subwords, or, at most, two subwords. It is also shown that when each of the subnetworks stores two mutually orthogonal binary subwords at most, the permissible words, defined as the combinations of the subwords (one corresponding to each subnetwork), that agree in their common bits are the unique ground states of the associated energy function.

Evolution of starspots in the long-period RS CVN binary V1817 Cygni = HR 7428

Photometry between 1982 and 1989, published and unpublished, is analyzed. The ellipticity effect produces variability with a full amplitude of 0.033 m in V. A recent time of light minimum (JD 2445988.0 + or - 0.3 d) combined with an old spectroscopic time of conjunction from the 1920's yields a much improved orbital period (108.854 + or - 0.003). Removal of the ellipticity effect reveals starspot variability. Four different spots were observed at various times, two of them present simultaneously in the light curve during 1985. Mean spot lifetimes were around 2 years and the largest amplitude attributed to starspots was 0.04 m in V during 1986. Derived rotation periods for two spots were 5.3 + or - 1.2 percent slower than synchronous and 3.0 + or - 0.4 percent faster. The differential rotation coefficient for the K2 giant is k = 0.25 + or - 0.04, compared to k = 0.186 for the sun. V1817 Cygni has the longest orbital period of any binary known to execute synchronous rotation.

X-ray illuminated stellar winds - Ionization effects in the radiative driving of stellar winds in massive X-ray binary systems

This paper presents calculations of the effect of changing X-ray ionization conditions on the radiative force experienced by the stellar wind material in a massive X-ray binary system. The radiative line force from the radiation field of the primary is parameterized in terms of the Castor et al. (1975) force multiplier. The results show that the line force decreases sharply, but in a nonlinear way, with increasing X-ray ionization. The dynamic consequences of this effect are discussed.

The orbital ephemeris and eclipse transitions of the low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748 - 676

Using the eclipses as fiducial markers, an updated ephemeris for EXO 0748 - 676 is derived and evidence is found that between February 1985 and March 1989 the 3.82-h orbital period of EXO 0748 - 676 decreased with a time scale of -5 x 10 to the 6th yr. The sense of this change is the same as that predicted by simple models for the evolution of low-mass X-ray binaries containing main-sequence companions, but is a factor about 100 faster than expected. This rapid change in orbital period could result from the expansion of the companion due to the effects of X-ray heating. The eclipse transition durations are variable, with the shortest observed taking 1.5 s and the longest 40 s. This latter figure is about an order of magnitude too large to be due to absorption effects in the atmosphere of the secondary assuming a Roche geometry and likely stellar temperature. Either flaring activity or the presence of an X-ray heated evaporative wind or a corona may enhance the scale height of the companion's atmosphere producing the extended eclipse transitions.

The effect of an electric field on the morphological stability of the crystal-melt interface of a binary alloy. III - Weakly nonlinear theory

The effect of a constant electric current on the crystal-melt interface morphology during directional solidification at constant velocity of a binary alloy is considered. A linear temperature field is assumed, and thermoelectric effects and Joule heating are neglected; electromigration and differing electrical conductivities of crystal and melt are taken into account. A two-dimensional weakly nonlinear analysis is carried out to third order in the interface amplitude, resulting in a cubic amplitude equation that describes whether the bifurcation from the planar state is supercritical or subcritical. For wavelengths corresponding to the most dangerous mode of linear theory, the demarcation between supercritical and subcritical behavior is calculated as a function of processing conditions and material parameters. The bifurcation behavior is a sensitive function of the magnitude and direction of the electric current and of the electrical conductivity ratio.

Effect of anisotropic thermal conductivity on the morphological stability of a binary alloy

A linear morphological stability analysis is presented for a planar interface during unidirectional solidification of a binary alloy, in the case of a crystal having an anisotropic thermal conductivity. A dispersion relation shows that the onset of instability depends on the orientation of the growth direction with respect to principal crystallographic axes and on the orientation of the wavevector of the perturbation. The onset of instability can be either oscillatory (traveling waves) or nonoscillatory in time. For growth along a principal axis of the crystal there is an exchange of stabilities, and the onset of instability is nonoscillatory.

Natural convection in binary gases due to horizontal thermal and solutal gradients

The influence of augmenting and opposing thermal and solutal buoyancy forces on natural convection of binary gases due to horizontal temperature and concentration gradients is examined through comparison of smoke flow visualization and measured temperature and concentration distributions with numerical predictions. The observed flow at the cold wall was unsteady for opposing body forces. The same basic flow structure was observed, but the unsteady flow intensifies as the opposing solutal buoyancy force increases as compared to the thermal buoyancy force. Comparison of predicted and measured temperatures and concentrations is fair overall, but the steady-state analytical model fails to predict the unsteady flow and heat and mass transport for opposing body forces.

Free energy change of off-eutectic binary alloys on solidification

A formula for the free energy difference between the undercooled liquid phase and the stable solid phase is derived for off-eutectic binary alloys in which the equilibrium solid/liquid transition takes place over a certain temperature range. The free energy change is then evaluated numerically for a Bi-25 at. pct Cd alloy modeled as a sub-subregular solution.

Rapid traversal of an image database using binary synthetic discriminant filters

Pattern recognition invariant to image rotations of up to 75 deg, using a single filter, has been demonstrated for binary synthetic discriminant function (BSDF) optical filters, suggesting their use in directed graph-arranged data bases which can be rapidly traversed by means of a filter-plane programmable spatial light modulator (SLM). The filter data base is arranged as a tree structure in which the root node filters are invariant to over 60 deg rotation, while the leaves are 5-deg invariant. Results are presented from experiments with BSDFs designed to recognize in-plane-rotated views of a Space Shuttle Orbiter. Using a magnetooptic SLM that is driven at 350 Hz in the filter plane, orientation identifications requiring less than 30 msec have been achieved after sequencing through only 10 BSDFs.

Computer search for binary cyclic UEP codes of odd length up to 65

Using an exhaustive computation, the unequal error protection capabilities of all binary cyclic codes of odd length up to 65 that have minimum distances at least 3 are found. For those codes that can only have upper bounds on their unequal error protection capabilities computed, an analytic method developed by Dynkin and Togonidze (1976) is used to show that the upper bounds meet the exact unequal error protection capabilities.

The binary Feige 24 - The mass, radius, and gravitational redshift of the DA white dwarf

Observations are reported which refine the binary ephemeris of the Feige 24 system, which contains a peculiar hot DA white dwarf and an M dwarf with an atmosphere illuminated by extreme ultraviolet radiation from the white dwarf. With the new ephemeris and a set of IUE high-dispersion spectra, showing phase-dependent redshifted C IV, N V, and Si IV resonance lines, the orbital velocity, and hence the mass (0.54 + or - 0.20 solar masses), and the gravitational redshift of the white dwarf (14.1 + or - 5.2 km/s) are determined independently. It is shown that the measured Einstein redshift is consistent with an estimated radius for the white dwarf obtained from a model atmosphere solid angle and a parallax measurement. This radius is twice the Hamada-Salpeter radius for the given mass and offers a prospect to investigate the presence of a massive hydrogen envelope in that white dwarf star.
