SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual (V.5.0)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Characterization of the Redesigned Extended MITL for HERMES III

Modeling and simulation of the legacy HERMES III Magnetically Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) has been performed using EMPHASIS, an unstructured time-domain electromagnetic (UTDEM) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation software. This design when used lost roughly half of its current before the pulse reached the load. The cause of the current loss in the MITL was found to be the vacuum impedance changes along the MITL. The MITL was then redesigned to maintain constant impedance and simulated in EMPHASIS once again. Following predicting simulation results, the new MITL was then built, installed, and tested, showing minimal current loss and good agreement with simulation and theoretical results, all of which are reported here. Additionally, an analysis of experimental voltage calculation techniques using cathode and anode currents is performed and compared to simulation results.

Mapped Moments to a Cartesian Grid (MMCG) Value-Added Product Report

Objective analysis (OA) is a method of mapping unstructured data to a structured grid. In the context of scanning radar data, OA is used to interpolate data in antenna coordinates (range, azimuth, and elevation) onto a regularly spaced Cartesian grid (Trapp and Doswell 2000). The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Mapped Moments to a Cartesian Grid (MMCG) Value-Added Product (VAP) uses the Python ARM Radar Toolkit (Py-ART), a data model-driven interactive architecture for working with weather radar data, to map the data to a Cartesian grid (Helmus and Collis 2016). MMCG, with Py-ART built in, has the ability to take radar data in antenna coordinates and map the gates to a Cartesian grid using inverse distance weight functions such as Cressman (square) and Barnes (exponential), but also can filter the data during the interpolation. MMCG also allows arbitrary formulations for the radius of influence, which are matched to particular radar scanning strategies. This creates a complex parameter space for optimizing the retention of storm structure detail while minimizing artifacts. MMCG takes data processed with ARM’s Corrected Precipitation Radar Moments in Antenna Coordinates (CMAC) VAP and maps it to a Cartesian grid as the output product. A variety of fields that have been mapped to the Cartesian grid are then saved to plots to complement each grid file.

Physics of the Serrano Sn Transport Package

Serrano is a software package for simulating photon transport in moving material. It presently supports 1-D, unstructured 2-D for a wide variety of element types, and 3-D for tetrahedra and hexahedra. The package is designed to be a component of larger codes, such as radiation hydrodynamics codes. Only the radiation transport equations are solved by Serrano itself.

SCEPTRE 2.3 Quick Start Guide

This report provides a summary of notes for building and running the Sandia Computational Engine for Particle Transport for Radiation Effects (SCEPTRE) code. SCEPTRE is a general- purpose C++ code for solving the linear Boltzmann transport equation in serial or parallel using unstructured spatial finite elements, multigroup energy treatment, and a variety of angular treatments including discrete ordinates (Sn) and spherical harmonics (Pn). Either the first-order form of the Boltzmann equation or one of the second-order forms may be solved. SCEPTRE requires a small number of open-source Third Party Libraries (TPL) to be available, and example scripts for building these TPL are provided. The TPL needed by SCEPTRE are Trilinos, Boost, and Netcdf. SCEPTRE uses an autotools build system, and a sample configure script is provided. Running the SCEPTRE code requires that the user provide a spatial finite-elements mesh in Exodus format and a cross section library in a format that will be described. SCEPTRE uses an xml-based input, and several examples will be provided.

A-SST Initial Specification

The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO), in partnership with IARPA, are investigating innovative, efficient, and scalable computer architectures that are capable of executing next-generation large scale data-analytic applications. These applications are increasingly sparse, unstructured, non-local, and heterogeneous. Under the Advanced Graphic Intelligence Logical computing Environment (AGILE) program, Performer teams will be asked to design computer architectures to meet the future needs of the DoD and the Intelligence Community (IC). This design effort will require flexible, scalable, and detailed simulation to assess the performance, efficiency, and validity of their designs. To support AGILE, Sandia National Labs will be providing the AGILE-enhanced Structural Simulation Toolkit (A-SST). This toolkit is a computer architecture simulation framework designed to support fast, parallel, and multi-scale simulation of novel architectures. This document describes the A-SST framework, some of its library of simulation models, and how it may be used by AGILE Performers.
