Spacecraft Orbit Design and Analysis (SODA), version 1.0 user's guide

The Spacecraft Orbit Design and Analysis (SODA) computer program, Version 1.0 is described. SODA is a spaceflight mission planning system which consists of five program modules integrated around a common database and user interface. SODA runs on a VAX/VMS computer with an EVANS & SUTHERLAND PS300 graphics workstation. BOEING RIM-Version 7 relational database management system performs transparent database services. In the current version three program modules produce an interactive three dimensional (3D) animation of one or more satellites in planetary orbit. Satellite visibility and sensor coverage capabilities are also provided. One module produces an interactive 3D animation of the solar system. Another module calculates cumulative satellite sensor coverage and revisit time for one or more satellites. Currently Earth, Moon, and Mars systems are supported for all modules except the solar system module.

Aeolian removal of dust from photovoltaic surfaces on Mars

It is well documented that Mars is totally engulfed in huge dust storms nearly each Martian year. Dust elevated in these global dust storms, or in any of the numerous local dust storms could settle on photovoltaic surfaces and seriously hamper photovoltaic power system performance. Using a recently developed technique to uniformly dust simulated photovoltaic surfaces, samples were subjected to Martian-like winds in an attempt to determine whether natural aeolian processes on Mars would sweep off the settled dust. The effects of wind velocity, angle of attack, height off the Martian surface, and surface coating material were investigated. Principles which can help to guide the design of photovoltaic arrays bound for the Martian surface were uncovered. Most importantly, arrays mounted with an angle of attack approaching 45 deg show the most efficient clearing. Although the angular dependence is not sharp, horizontally mounted arrays required significantly higher wind velocities to clear off the dust. From the perspective of dust-clearing it appears that the arrays may be erected quite near the ground, but previous studies have suggested that saltation effects can be expected to cause such arrays to be covered by sand if they are set up less than about a meter from the ground. Providing that the surface chemistry of Martian dusts is comparable to our test dust, the materials used for protective coating may be optimized for other considerations such as transparency, and chemical or abrasion resistance. The static threshold velocity is low enough that there are regions on Mars which experience winds strong enough to clear off a photovoltaic array if it is properly oriented. Turbulence fences proved to be an ineffective strategy to keep dust cleared from the photovoltaic surfaces.

The effect of leveling coatings on the atomic oxygen durability of solar concentrator surfaces

Space power systems for Space Station Freedom will be exposed to the harsh environment of low earth orbit (LEO). Neutral atomic oxygen is the major constituent in LEO and has the potential of severely reducing the efficiency of solar dynamic power systems through degradation of the concentrator surfaces. Several transparent dielectric thin films have been found to provide atomic oxygen protection, but atomic oxygen undercutting at inherent defect sites is still a threat to solar dynamic power system survivability. Leveling coatings smooth microscopically rough surfaces, thus eliminating potential defect sites prone to oxidation attack on concentrator surfaces. The ability of leveling coatings to improve the atomic oxygen durability of concentrator surfaces was investigated. The application of a EPO-TEK 377 epoxy leveling coating on a graphite epoxy substrate resulted in an increase in solar specular reflectance, a decrease in the atomic oxygen defect density by an order of magnitude and a corresponding order of magnitude decrease in the percent loss of specular reflectance during atomic oxygen plasma ashing.

Recent results from advanced research on space solar cells at NASA

The NASA program in space photovoltaic research and development encompasses a wide range of emerging options for future space power systems, and includes both cell and array technology development. The long range goals are to develop technology capable of achieving 300 W/kg for planar arrays, and 300 W/sq m for concentrator arrays. InP and GaAs planar and concentrator cell technologies are under investigation for their potential high efficiency and good radiation resistance. The Advanced Photovoltaic Solar Array (APSA) program is a near term effort aimed at demonstrating 130 W/kg beginning of life specific power using thin (62 pm) silicon cells. It is intended to be technology transparent to future high efficiency cells and provides the baseline for development of the 300 W/kg array.

The photo-colorimetric space as a medium for the representation of spatial data

Spatial displays and instruments are usually used in the context of vehicle guidance, but it is hard to find applicable spatial formats in information retrieval and interaction systems. Human interaction with spatial data structures and the applicability of the CIE color space to improve dialogue transparency is discussed. A proposal is made to use the color space to code spatially represented data. The semantic distances of the categories of dialogue structures or, more general, of database structures, are determined empirically. Subsequently the distances are transformed and depicted into the color space. The concept is demonstrated for a car diagnosis system, where the category cooling system could, e.g., be coded in blue, the category ignition system in red. Hereby a correspondence between color and semantic distances is achieved. Subcategories can be coded as luminance differences within the color space.

Temperature and melt solid interface control during crystal growth

Findings on the adaptive control of a transparent Bridgman crystal growth furnace are summarized. The task of the process controller is to establish a user specified axial temperature profile by controlling the temperatures in eight heating zones. The furnace controller is built around a computer. Adaptive PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) and Pole Placement control algorithms are applied. The need for adaptive controller stems from the fact that the zone dynamics changes with respect to time. The controller was tested extensively on the Lead Bromide crystal growth. Several different temperature profiles and ampoule's translational rates are tried. The feasibility of solid liquid interface quantification by image processing was determined. The interface is observed by a color video camera and the image data file is processed to determine if the interface is flat, convex or concave.

Aromatic polyimides containing a dimethylsilane-linked dianhydride

A high-temperature stable, optically transparent, low dielectric aromatic polyimide is prepared by chemically combining equimolar quantities of an aromatic dianhydride reactant and an aromatic diamine reactant, which are selected so that one reactant contains at least one Si(CH3)2 group in its molecular structure, and the other reactant contains at least one -CF3 group in its molecular structure. The reactants are chemically combined in a solvent medium to form a solution of a high molecular weight polyamic acid, which is then converted to the corresponding polyimide.

Cirrus radiative characteristics and the radiative impact of small particles

An understanding of the way radiation interacts with clouds is vital for understanding the sensitivity of the earth's climate to both natural and anthropogenic changes in the atmosphere. Cirrus clouds are thought to be an important modulator of climate sensitivity. The feedback effect of cirrus on climate can be positive or negative depending upon the microphysics and scattering properties of the cloud. These properties of cirrus clouds are not well understood partly because of their thin tenuous nature and partly because of their microphysical properties. The high altitude and cold temperatures within these clouds along with their transparency greatly increase the difficulty in which accurate measurements can be obtained and interpreted both by aircraft and remote sensing. Therefore, the understanding of the interaction of radiation in cirrus clouds is crucial to determining the ways in which these clouds interact with climate forcings. The sensitivity of the radiative budgets of cirrus cloudiness to their microphysical composition and the environments in which they occur is examined. Especially important is the impact of small particles on the radiative properties of cirrus. Remote sensing estimates of the effective crystal size of cirrus and in situ measurements show large differences up to 100 microns. Thus it becomes important to identify the sources of these differences. For this reason, simulations of actual FIRE cases are compared with the in situ radiative observations and inferences are made concerning the cause of the discrepancies.

A circular combustor configuration with multiple injection ports for mixing enhancement

A circular combustor design by Ghorashi (1988) which resembles a continuously-stirred tank reactor with multiple injection ports is presented with a view to the enhanced control of mixing, NO(x) reduction, and combustion efficiency maximization. Attention is given to the prototype apparatus for this type of circular combustor, which takes the form of a transparent cold-flow reactor for flow visualization studies under 'chemically frozen' conditions.

Galaxy formation and the origin of the ionizing flux at large redshift

The absence of any continuous Ly-alpha opacity from the intergalactic medium at z = 3-4.5 can be understood if a significant population of star-forming galaxies is present at these redshifts. It is shown that such galaxies can be present within the galaxy populations at B = 22 to 27. The expected ionization produced during galaxy formation is analyzed in terms of highly model-independent metal production arguments and it is concluded that (if such galaxies are dust-free and transparent to ionizing photons) then at least 4(H0/50 km/s Mpc)-cubed percent of galaxy formation would have to have occurred in this redshift range.

Recoverable distributed shared virtual memory - Memory coherence and storage structures

This paper examines the problem of implementing rollback recovery in multicomputer distributed shared virtual memory environments, in which the shared memory is implemented in software and exists only virtually. A user-transparent checkpointing recovery scheme and new twin-page disk storage management are presented to implement a recoverable distributed shared virtual memory. The checkpointing scheme is integrated with the shared virtual memory management. The twin-page disk approach allows incremental checkpointing without an explicit undo at the time of recovery. A single consistent checkpoint state is maintained on stable disk storage. The recoverable distributed shared virtual memory allows the system to restart computation from a previous checkpoint due to a processor failure without a global restart.

Trellis-coded multidimensional phase modulation

A 2L-dimensional multiple phase-shift keyed (MPSK) (L x MPSK) signal set is obtained by forming the Cartesian product of L two-dimensional MPSK signal sets. A systematic approach to partitioning L x MPSK signal sets that is based on block coding is used. An encoder system approach is developed. It incorporates the design of a differential precoder, a systematic convolutional encoder, and a signal set mapper. Trellis-coded L x 4PSK, L x 8PSK, and L x 16PSK modulation schemes are found for L = 1-4 and a variety of code rates and decoder complexities, many of which are fully transparent to discrete phase rotations of the signal set. The new codes achieve asymptotic coding gains up to 5.85 dB.

Highly efficient pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well lasers for monolithic integration

Highly efficient ridge waveguide pseudomorphic single quantum well lasers, emitting at 980 nm, have been fabricated from an In(0.2)Ga(0.8)As/GaAs/AlGaAs graded-index separate confinement heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The laterial index guiding provided by the ridge reduces the anomalously large lateral loss of optical power found in gain-guided structures, thereby reducing the internal loss by more than 50 percent. The low threshold current (7.6 mA) and high differential quantum efficiency (79 percent) obtained under continuous operation as well as the transparency of the GaAs substrate to the emitted radiation render these lasers attractive for Ga-As-based optoelectronic integration.

Sources of variability in satellite-derived estimates of phytoplankton production in the eastern tropical Pacific

As a proxy for satellite CZCS observations and concurrent measurements of primary production rates, data from 138 stations occupied seasonally during 1967-1968 in the offshore eastern tropical Pacific were analyzed in terms of six temporal groups and our current regimes. Multiple linear regressions on column production Pt show that simulated satellite pigment is generally weakly correlated, but sometimes not correlated with Pt, and that incident irradiance, sea surface temperature, nitrate, transparency, and depths of mixed layer or nitracline assume little or no importance. After a proxy for the light-saturated chlorophyll-specific photosynthetic rate P(max) is added, the coefficient of determination ranges from 0.55 to 0.91 (median of 0.85) for the 10 cases. In stepwise multiple linear regressions the P(max) proxy is the best predictor for Pt.
