Magnetic skyrmion diode: Unidirectional skyrmion motion via symmetry breaking of potential energy barriers

In this work, we realize a magnetic skyrmion diode operated by a unidirectional skyrmion transport that flows in only one direction, which is highly significant for information processing in spintronic and nanoelectronic devices. We easily control the skyrmion transport by engineering asymmetric shapes of geometric structures. Here, we present a simple method to describe the underlying mechanism behind the unidirectional skyrmion transport by characterizing the topography of potential energy surfaces from a purely geometric perspective. Our approach enables a deeper physical insight into skyrmion transport manipulation and efficient design of skyrmion-based devices in geometric structures.

Nonsymmorphic symmetry and field-driven odd-parity pairing in Ce Rh 2 As 2

Recently, evidence has emerged for a field-induced even- to odd-parity superconducting phase transition in CeRh 2 As 2 . In this paper we argue that the P4/nmm nonsymmorphic crystal structure of CeRh 2 As 2 plays a key role in enabling this transition by ensuring large spin-orbit interactions near the Brillouin zone boundaries, which naturally leads to the required near-degeneracy of the even- and odd-parity channels. We further comment on the relevance of our theory to FeSe, which crystallizes in the same structure.

Pairing symmetry of twisted bilayer graphene: A phenomenological synthesis

One of the outstanding questions in the study of twisted bilayer graphene—from both experimental and theoretical points of view—is the nature of its superconducting phase. In this paper we perform a comprehensive synthesis of existing experiments, and argue that experimental constraints are strong enough to allow the structure of the superconducting order parameter to be nearly uniquely determined. In particular, we argue that the order parameter is nodal, and is formed from an admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. This argument is made on phenomenological grounds, without committing to any particular microscopic model of the superconductor. Existing data is insufficient to determine the orbital parity of the order parameter, which could be either p wave or d wave. We propose a way in which the measurement of Andreev edge states can be used to distinguish between the two.

Identifying $\textit{f}$-electron symmetries of UTe 2 with O-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The recent discovery of spin-triplet superconductivity emerging from a nonmagnetic parent state in UTe 2 has stimulated great interest in the underlying mechanism of Cooper pairing. Experimental characterization of short-range electronic and magnetic correlations is vital to understanding these phenomena. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and atomic-multiplet-based modeling to shed light on the active debate between $5f^26d^1$-based models with singlet crystal field states versus $5f^3$-based models that predict atomic Kramers doublets and much greater $5\textit{f}$ itinerancy. In this work, the XAS and RIXS data are found to agree strongly with predictions for a $5f^26d^1$-like valence electron configuration with weak intradimer magnetic correlations, and provide a context for interpreting recent investigations of the electronic structure and superconducting pairing mechanism.

Three-state Potts nematic order in stacked frustrated spin models with SO(3) symmetry

Here, we propose stacked two-dimensional lattice designs of frustrated and SO(3) symmetric spin models consisting of antiferromagnetic (AF) triangular and ferromagnetic (FM) sixfold symmetric sublattices that realize emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ Potts nematic order. Considering bilinear-biquadratic spin interactions, our models describe an SO(3)-symmetric triangular lattice AF subject to a fluctuating magnetization arising from the FM coupled sublattice. We focus on the classical AFM-FM windmill model and map out the zero- and finite-temperature phase diagram using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical calculations. We discover a state with composite Potts nematic order above the ferrimagnetic three-sublattice up-up-down ground state and relate it to Potts phases in SO(3)-broken Heisenberg and Ising AFMs in external magnetic fields. Finally, we show that the biquadratic exchange in our model is automatically induced by thermal and quantum fluctuations in the purely bilinear Heisenberg model, easing the requirements for realizing these lattice designs experimentally.
