Colin Gum and the discovery of the Gum nebula

The research of Colin Gum in the field of astronomy is reviewed. It includes a radio survey at 200 MHz, a photographic survey for HII regions in the Southern Milky Way from longitude 220 deg to 20 deg, and a catalogue of 85 physically separate regions. He suggested that certain faint nebulosities were part of a large, nearby H II region excited by gamma Velorum and zeta Puppis. He was also concerned with 21-cm studies.

Production of gamma rays in the crab nebula pulsar

The gamma-ray flux at energies above 50 MeV from NP0532 is evaluated for a pulsar model in which the optical and X-radiation is produced by synchrotron effect. Synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering are considered as production mechanisms of the gamma-rays. The theoretical estimates are compared with the experimental values.

Gamma-ray absorption for a beam model of the Crab nebula pulsar NP0532

A model is discussed for determining gamma ray absorption from NP0532 by estimating the effect of beaming as indicated by the pulsations. The main absorption process is considered to be that of pair production in the intense photon field which occurs during the pulse. The results indicate that for this model, absorption does not occur below 10 GeV.

Observation of Pulsed Gamma Rays with Energies Greater than 250 keV from the Crab Nebula Pulsar NP 0532

Data from a balloon flight experiment using an Na I scintillation spectrometer were analyzed for gamma ray pulsation. The payload was carried to a nominal atmospheric depth of 3.5 g/cm2. A superposed epoch analysis was performed on a 12,000 second portion of the data spanning a total time interval of 16,700 seconds at float altitude. A positive pulsed contribution was observed at the expected apparent frequency of NP 0532 having the typical double pulse structure. The results indicate a time-averaged pulse photon flux of 0.00144 + or - 0.00057 photons/sq cm/sec in the energy interval from 250 keV to 2.3 MeV. This represents a time-averaged pulsed power of 0.000649 + or - 0.000257 keV/sq cm/sec/keV. The ratio of interpulse to main pulse was found to be 2.4 + or - 1.9. The analysis indicates a positive photon flux from 250 keV to 725 keV of 0.00120 + or - 0.00052 photons/sq cm/sec.

Kinematics of the Huygenian region of the Orion nebula

The nebular (O II) lambda 3726 and (O III) lambda 5007 radial velocity measures of Wilson, et al (1959) are presented in contour map form. The space motions of theta 1 and theta 2 Orionis and the nebular measures are discussed.

Giant loops: A new kind of nebula

Four enormous, loop-shaped features were found in ground-based surveys of the low-frequency galactic radio emission. With diameters of 40 to 116 deg, they include the Cetus Arc and the North Polar Spur and were formerly called the radio spurs.

The peculiar nebula M2-9.

The spectrum of M2-9 is analyzed and its strong infrared excess and internal motions are described. It is suggested that M2-9 is a previously unannounced member of the class of objects possessing strong Fe II emission lines in their spectra and having prominent infrared continua.
