Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Studies of the correlations of the two highest transverse momentum (leading) jets in individual Pb+Pb collision events can provide information about the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. In Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, measurements of the leading dijet transverse momentum ($p_T$) correlations are presented. Additionally, measurements in Pb+Pb collisions of the dijet pair nuclear modification factors projected along leading and subleading jet $p_T$ are made. The measurements are performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC with 260 pb –1 of pp data collected in 2017 and 2.2 nb –1 of Pb+Pb data collected in 2015 and 2018. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional leading and subleading jet $p_T$ distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. Results are provided for dijets with leading jet $p_T$ greater than 100 GeV. Measurements of the dijet-yield-normalized $x_{J}$ distributions in Pb+Pb collisions show an increased fraction of imbalanced jets compared to pp collisions; these measurements are in agreement with previous measurements of the same quantity at 2.76 TeV in the overlapping kinematic range. Measurements of the absolutely normalized dijet rate in Pb+Pb and pp collisions are also presented, and show that balanced dijets are significantly more suppressed than imbalanced dijets in Pb+Pb collisions. It is observed in the measurements of the pair nuclear modification factors that the subleading jets are significantly suppressed relative to leading jets with $p_T$ between 100 and 316 GeV for all centralities in Pb+Pb collisions.

Observation of large missing-momentum ( e , e ' p ) cross-section scaling and the onset of correlated-pair dominance in nuclei

Herein we report the first measurement of $x_B$-scaling in $(e,e'p)$ cross-section ratios off nuclei relative to deuterium at large missing-momentum of $350 \leq p_{miss} \leq 600$ MeV/c. The observed scaling extends over a kinematic range of $0.7 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$, which is significantly wider than $1.4 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$ previously observed for inclusive $(e,e')$ cross-section ratios. The $x_B$-integrated cross-section ratios become constant (i.e., scale) beginning at $p_{miss}\approx k_F$, the nuclear Fermi momentum. Comparing with theoretical calculations we find good agreement with Generalized Contact Formalism calculations for high missing-momentum ($> 375$ MeV/c), suggesting the observed scaling results from interacting with nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. For low missing-momenta, mean-field calculations show good agreement with the data for $p_{miss}\le k_F$, and suggest that contributions to the measured cross-section ratios from scattering off single, un-correlated, nucleons are non-negligible up to $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c. Therefore, SRCs become dominant in nuclei at $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c, well above the nuclear Fermi Surface of $k_F \approx 250$ MeV/c.

Nuclear rotation at the fission limit in Rf 254

A ground-state rotational band in the fissile nucleus Rf254 was observed for the first time. Levels up to spin 14 and excitation energy of 1.56 MeV were observed. The Rf254 nuclei were produced using the Pb206(Ti50,2n) fusion-evaporation reaction. It is the weakest reaction channel ever studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. The reaction products were separated from the beam in the Argonne gas-filled analyzer (AGFA). The Rf254 nuclei were implanted into a double-sided Si strip detector at the AGFA focal plane and tagged with subsequent ground-state spontaneous fission decays using temporal and spatial correlations. Prompt γ rays in coincidence with the Rf254 recoils were detected in the Gammasphere array of Ge detectors. In order to identify the ground-state rotational band in Rf254, a method for identifying rotational bands in low statistics γ-ray spectra was developed. The deduced Rf254 kinematic moment of inertia is smaller compared to neighboring even-even nuclei. This is most likely associated with a slightly lower quadrupole deformation and stronger pairing correlations in Rf254. The behavior of the moment of inertia as a function of rotational frequency is similar to that of the lighter N=150 isotones Fm250 and No252.

Contribution from intrinsic charm production to fixed-target interactions with the SMOG Device at LHCb

Intrinsic charm, nonperturbative charm in the hadron wavefunction, has long been speculated but has never been satisfactorily proven. Open charm and 𝐽/𝜓 measurements in a fixed-target configuration at the LHCb searched for this contribution but reported no evidence. $\overline{D}$ meson and 𝐽/𝜓 production is calculated for the SMOG fixed-target configuration in the LHCb experiment using a combination of perturbative QCD and intrinsic charm to see whether intrinsic charm would indeed be observable in the SMOG kinematics. Open charm and 𝐽/𝜓 production is calculated to next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Because a gas jet nuclear target is used, cold nuclear matter effects are included in the perturbative calculations. The intrinsic charm is calculated assuming production from a |𝑢⁢𝑢⁢𝑑⁢$\overline{c}$⁢$\rangle$ Fock state. The differential rapidity and transverse momentum distributions in 𝑝+Ne, 𝑝+He, and 𝑝+Ar fixed-target interactions are calculated in the SMOG acceptance and compared to data. The predicted asymmetries between $\overline{D}$ (leading charm) and 𝐷 (nonleading charm) are also shown. The contribution from intrinsic charm is small and decreases with center-of-mass energy. The calculations agree well with the current SMOG data, with or without intrinsic charm.

Measurement of inclusive 𝐽/𝜓 pair production cross section in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at √𝑠=13 TeV

The production cross section of inclusive J/ψ pairs in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is measured with ALICE. The measurement is performed for J/ψ in the rapidity interval 2.5 < y < 4.0 and for transverse momentum p T > 0. The production cross section of inclusive J/ψ pairs is reported to be 10.3 ±2.3(stat.) ±1.3(syst.) nb in this kinematic interval. The contribution from nonprompt J/ψ (i.e., originated from beauty-hadron decays) to the inclusive sample is evaluated. The effective double-parton scattering cross section is computed, neglecting the single-parton scattering contribution.

Semirelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics for the production of energetic neutrons in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions

Relativistic corrections have been made in the nonrelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (amd) simulations to apply to the high-energy neutron production in the 12 C + 12 C and 16 O + 12 C collisions at incident energies of 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The corrections are made in kinematics alone and neither nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings nor meson productions are taken into account, and amd with the relativistic corrections is called semirelativistic amd. The three-nucleon collision (3NC) and Fermi boost in the collision processes are taken into account in the nonrelativistic AMD. Since the relativistic corrections tend to compensate in each other, the difference between the semirelativistic and nonrelativistic results become small. High-energy tails of the available experimental neutron double-differential cross sections, especially at larger angles, are well reproduced by amd with the 3NC term both with nonrelativistic and semirelativistic simulations. Furthermore, these results indicate that the high-energy neutrons are dominantly produced by the 3NC process in this incident energy range.

Measurement of the 25 Al(𝑑,𝑛)⁢ 26 Si reaction and impact on the 25 Al⁢(𝑝,𝛾)⁢ 26 Si reaction rate

The 25 Al(p,γ) 26 Si reaction plays a key role in nucleosynthesis pathways that influence the galactic abundance of 26 Al. A more precise determination of the proton strength of the lowest ℓ = 0 proton resonance in 26 Si is needed to improve reaction-rate calculations. This work measures the 25 Al(d,n) 26 Si proton-transfer reaction in inverse kinematics using a radioactive ion beam at RESOLUT, determining excitation energies and cross sections for the lowest ℓ = 0 resonance associated with the 3 + 3 state at 5.92(2) MeV. Coupled-reaction-channels calculations (FRESCO) are used to extract the ℓ = 0 spectroscopic factor and the corresponding proton width, yielding Γₚ = 2.19(45) eV and a (p,γ) resonance strength of 26(10) meV. This resonance is found to dominate the 25 Al(p,γ) 26 Si reaction rate above 0.2 GK.

Proton removal from Br 73 , 75 to Se 72 , 74 at intermediate energies

Herein we report new experimental data for excited states of 72,74 Se obtained from proton removal from 73,75 Br secondary beams on a proton target. The experiments were performed with the Ursinus-NSCL Liquid Hydrogen Target and the combined GRETINA+S800 setup at the Coupled Cyclotron Facility of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. Within uncertainties, the inclusive cross sections for proton removal from 73,75 Br on a proton target are identical suggesting that the same single-particle orbitals contribute to the proton-removal reaction. In addition, details of the partial cross section fragmentation are discussed. The data might suggest that l = 1, 2, 3, and 4 angular momentum transfers are important to understand the population of excited states of 72,74 Se in proton removal. Available data for excited states of 74 Ge populated through the 75 As(d, 3 He) 74 Ge proton-removal reaction in normal kinematics suggest indeed that the fp and sd shell as well as the 1g 9/2 orbital contribute. A comparison to data available for odd-A nuclei supports that the bulk of the spectroscopic strengths could be found at lower energies in the even-even Se isotopes than in, for instance, the even-even Ge isotopes. In addition, the population of high-J states seems to indicate that multi-step processes contribute to proton-removal reactions at intermediate energies in these collective nuclei.

Elastic scattering of 3 He + 4 He with the SONIK scattering chamber

Measurements of the elastic scattering cross section of 3 He and 4 He are important in order to improve constraints on theoretical models of 4 He ⁢( 3 He ,𝛾)⁢ 7 Be, a key reaction in Big Bang nucleosynthesis and solar neutrino production. The astrophysical 𝑆 factor for this reaction is a significant source of uncertainty in the standard-solar-model prediction of the 7 Be and 8 B solar neutrino fluxes. The elastic scattering measurements reported in the literature do not extend to low energies and lack proper uncertainty quantification. A new measurement of the 4 He ⁢( 3 He, 3 He)⁢ 4 He reaction has been made at center-of-mass energies 𝐸c.m.=0.38−3.13 MeV using the Scattering of Nuclei in Inverse Kinematics (SONIK) scattering chamber: a windowless, extended gas target surrounded by an array of 30 collimated silicon charged particle detectors situated at TRIUMF. This is the first elastic scattering measurement of 3 He + 4 He made below 500 keV and it has greater angular range and better precision than previous measurements. The elastic scattering data were analyzed using both 𝑅-matrix and halo effective field theory frameworks, and values of the 𝑠-wave scattering length and effective range were extracted. Here, the resulting improvement in knowledge of the 𝑠-wave effective-range function at low energies reduces the overall uncertainty in 𝑆 34 at solar energies.

Deuterium-tritium fusion γ -ray spectrum at MeV energies with application to reaction-in-flight inertial confinement fusion measurements

In inertial confinement fusion implosions, tertiary reaction-in-flight processes create deuterium-tritium fusion reactions [ T ( d , n ) 4 He ] with an incident particle moving at MeV energies instead of the thermonuclear keV temperatures. Additional relativistic kinematic treatments were added to a nuclear resonance code, , and resulting calculations showed an upshifting of the deuterium-tritium fusion γ -ray pathway [ T ( d , γ ) 5 He ] for MeV interactions. Using the calculated spectra, a representative reaction-in-flight γ -ray emission for ICF implosions was estimated. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Pseudo-neutrino versus recoil formalism for 4-body phase space and applications to nuclear decay

It is well known that the traditional treatment of radiative corrections that utilizes the “true” neutrino momentum$\overrightarrow{p}_v$ in the differential decay rate formula could lead to a ~α/π systematic error in certain observables due to the mistreatment of 4-body kinematics. Here, I investigate the theory structure of one of the proposed solutions, the “v'-formalism”, in the nonrecoil limit appropriate for neutron and nuclear β decays. I derive an elegant master formula for the 4-body phase space and use it to reanalyze the spectrum-dependent “outer” radiative corrections to the β decay of a polarized spin-half nucleus; a complete set of analytic expressions is provided for readers to straightforwardly obtain the final numerical results. Furthermore, I compare it to the “recoil formalism” where the energy of the recoil nucleus is fixed.

Ne 21 energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold

Nuclei around Ne 20 exhibit an interplay of different excitations caused by different aspects of nuclear structure, including single-particle and multiparticle configurations and collective rotations. One-nucleon transfer reactions selectively probe single-particle structures in these nuclei. These nuclei are also important to astrophysics, with a number of important reactions proceeding through this mass region. Energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold in Ne 21 are of importance to nuclear structure. The Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction was measured and the corresponding spectroscopic nuclear information was extracted. States in Ne 21 were populated using the Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction in forward kinematics. Protons were identified in the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) Enge split-pole spectrograph and angular distributions were extracted. Spin-party assignments were made and neutron partial widths were determined based on distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. Several new energy levels were observed at energies of 7176, 7235, 7250, and 7337 keV, and spin-parities are reported which generally agree with previous results where literature was available. Spin and parity assignments are reported for several energy levels along with estimated neutron widths for those states above the neutron threshold ( S n = 6761 keV ). Results from this study are placed in context with a review of the available literature on all known states in this energy region of Ne 21 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Jet-hadron correlations with respect to the event plane in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions in STAR

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with 15 < 𝑝 T,jet < 20 and 20 < 𝑝 T,jet < 40 ⁢GeV/𝑐 were reconstructed with the anti-𝑘 T algorithm with radius parameter setting of 𝑅 = 0.4 in the 20–50% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collision data.

Measurement of forward charged hadron flow harmonics in peripheral PbPb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV with the LHCb detector

Flow harmonic coefficients, v n , which are the key to studying the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions, have been measured in various collision systems and kinematic regions and using various particle species. The study of flow harmonics in a wide pseudorapidity range is particularly valuable to understand the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the QGP. This paper presents the first LHCb results of the second- and the third-order flow harmonic coefficients of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum in the forward region, corresponding to pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.9, using the data collected from PbPb collisions in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV . The coefficients measured using the two-particle angular correlation analysis method are smaller than the central-pseudorapidity measurements at ALICE and ATLAS from the same collision system but share similar features. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Direct cross-section measurement of the weak r -process Sr 88 ( α , n ) Zr 91 reaction in ν -driven winds of core-collapse supernovae

About half of the heavy elements beyond iron are known to be produced by the rapid neutron capture process, known as the r process. However, the astrophysical site producing the r process is still uncertain. Chemical abundances observed in several cosmic sites indicate that different mechanisms should be at play. For instance, the abundances around silver measured in a subset of metal-poor stars indicate the presence of a weak r process. This process may be active in neutrino-driven winds of core collapse supernovae where (α,n) reactions dominate the synthesis of Ζ ≈ 40 elements in the expelled materials. Scarcely measured, the rates of (α,n) reactions are determined from statistical Hauser-Feshbach calculations with α-optical-model potentials, which are still poorly constrained. Further, the uncertainties of the (α,n) reaction rates therefore make a significant contribution to the uncertainties of the abundances determined from stellar modeling. In this work, the 88 Sr (α,n)⁢ 91 Zr reaction which impacts the weak r-process abundances has been probed at astrophysics energy for the first time; directly measuring the total cross sections at astrophysical energies of 8.37–13.09 MeV in the center of mass (3.8–7.5 GK). Two measurements were performed at ATLAS with the electrically segmented ionization chamber MUSIC, in inverse kinematics, while following the active target technique. The cross sections of this α-induced reaction on 88 Sr, located at the shell closure N = 50, have been found to be lower than expected, by a factor of 3, despite recent statistical calculations validated by measurements on neighboring nuclei. This result encourages more experimental investigations of (α,n) reactions, at Ν = 50 and towards the neutron-rich side, to further test the predictive power and reliability of such calculations.

Electroproduction of the Λ/Σ 0 hyperons at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 at forward angles

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nn⁢Λ state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022); B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data were also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Λ/Σ 0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 , W = 2.14 GeV, and θ$^{c.m.}_{γK}$ ≃ 8°. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data are scarce and a low-Q 2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q 2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Λ/Σ 0 hyperon electroproduction. Here, this paper reports on the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p → e' + K + + Λ/Σ 0 reaction at 0.2–0.8 (GeV/c) 2 , and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models.

Investigating Λ baryon production in 𝑝-Pb collisions in jets and the underlying event using angular correlations

First measurements of hadron-Λ (ℎ−Λ) azimuthal angular correlations in 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. These correlations are used to separate the production of associated Λ baryons into three different kinematic regions, namely those produced in the direction of the trigger particle (near side), those produced in the opposite direction (away side), and those whose production is uncorrelated with the jet axis (underlying event). The per-trigger associated Λ yields in these regions are extracted, along with the near- and away-side azimuthal peak widths, and the results are studied as a function of associated particle 𝑝 T and event multiplicity. Comparisons with the dpmjet event generator and previous measurements of the 𝜙⁡(1020) meson are also made. The final results indicate that strangeness production in the highest multiplicity 𝑝-Pb collisions is enhanced relative to low multiplicity collisions in both the jetlike regions and the underlying event. The production of Λ relative to charged hadrons is also enhanced in the underlying event when compared to the jetlike regions. Additionally, the results hint that strange quark production in the away-side of the jet is modified by soft interactions with the underlying event.
