Intervalley electron-hole exchange interaction and impurity-assisted recombination of indirect excitons in WS 2 and WSe 2 monolayers

The variety of excitonic states in tungsten-based dichalcogenide monolayers stems from unique interplay between the spin and valley degrees of freedom. One of the exciton species is the indirect exciton (momentum or valley dark), which is responsible for a series of resonances when the monolayer is charge neutral. We investigate the short-range electron-hole exchange interaction of the indirect exciton, as well as its recombination mechanism mediated by impurities. The analysis provides thorough understanding of the energy and polarization of the zero-phonon indirect exciton resonance in the emission spectrum.

Spin dynamics and exchange interaction in orthoferrite TbFeO 3 with non-Kramers rare-earth ion

The low-temperature spin dynamics of the orthorhombic TbFeO 3 perovskite has been studied. It has been found that the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum of the investigated compound contains two modes corresponding to different sublattices. It is shown that the iron subsystem orders antiferromagnetically at T N =632 K and exhibits the high-energy magnon dispersion. The magnetic dynamics of this subsystem has been described within the linear spin wave theory and the in-plane and out-of-plane exchange anisotropy has been demonstrated. The approach proposed previously to describe the magnon dispersion in the TmFeO 3 compound has been used. Three levels of the nondispersive crystal electric field corresponding to Tb 3+ ions have been found in the energy region below 40 meV at about 17, 26, and 35 meV. The behavior of the magnetic correlation length of the terbium subsystem has been determined by studying the diffuse scattering at different temperatures. The evolution of this subsystem has been numerically described within the point charge model. In conclusion, it is shown that the numerical data agree satisfactorily with the experiment and with the general concept of the single-ion approximation applied to the rare-earth subsystem of orthorhombic perovskites.

Noncollinear ground states of solids with a source-free exchange correlation functional

In this paper, we expand upon the source-free (SF) exchange correlation (XC) functional developed by Sangeeta Sharma and coworkers to plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) based on the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. This constraint is implemented by the current authors within the VASP source code, using a fast Poisson solver that capitalizes on the parallel three-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) implemented in VASP. Using this modified XC functional, we explore the improved convergence behavior that results from applying this constraint to the GGA-PBE+U+J functional. In the process, we compare the noncollinear magnetic ground state computed by each functional and their SF counterpart for a select number of magnetic materials in order to provide a metric for comparing with experimentally determined magnetic orderings. We observe significantly improved agreement with experimentally measured magnetic ground-state structures after applying the source-free constraint. Furthermore, we explore the importance of considering probability current densities in spin-polarized systems, even under no applied field. We analyze the XC torque as well, in order to provide theoretical and computational analyses of the net XC magnetic torque induced by the source-free constraint. Along these lines, we highlight the importance of properly considering the real-space integral of the source-free local magnetic XC field. Our analyses on probability currents, net torque, and constant terms draw additional links to the rich body of previous research on spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT), and pave the way for future extensions and corrections to the SF corrected XC functional.

Two-photon exchange from intermediate state resonances in elastic electron-proton scattering

In this paper, we use a recently developed dispersive approach to compute the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to elastic electron-proton scattering, including contributions from hadronic $J^P=1/2^\pm$ and $3/2^\pm$ resonant intermediate states below~1.8~GeV. For the transition amplitudes from the proton ground state to the resonant excited states we employ new exclusive meson electroproduction data from CLAS at $Q^2 \lesssim 5$~GeV$^2$, and we explore the effects of both fixed and dynamic widths for the resonances. Among the resonant states, the $N(1520)~\!3/2^-$ becomes dominant for $Q^2 \gtrsim 2$~GeV$^2$, with a sign opposite to the comparably sized $\Delta(1232)~\!3/2^+$ contribution, leading to an overall increase in the size of the TPE correction to the cross section relative to the nucleon only contribution at higher $Q^2$ values. The results are in good overall agreement with recent $e^+ p$ to $e^- p$ cross section ratio and polarization transfer measurements, and provide compelling evidence for a resolution of the electric to magnetic form factor ratio discrepancy.

Comparing different density-matrix expansions for long-range pion exchange

Empirical energy density functionals (EDFs) are generally successful in describing nuclear properties across the table of nuclides. But their limitations motivate using the density-matrix expansion (DME) to embed long-range pion interactions into a Skyrme functional. Recent results on the impact of the pion were both encouraging and puzzling, necessitating a careful re-examination of the DME implementation. In this study, we take the first steps, focusing on two-body scalar terms in the DME. Exchange energies with long-range one-pion contributions are well approximated by all DME implementations considered, with preference for variants that do not truncate at two derivatives in every EDF term. The use of the DME for chiral pion contributions is therefore supported by this investigation. For scalar-isovector energies it is important to treat neutrons and protons separately. The results are found to apply under broad conditions, although self-consistency is not yet tested.

Renormalization of one-pion exchange in chiral effective field theory for antinucleon-nucleon scattering

The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) is studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($\chi$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}N$) system. The OPE potential is cut off at a certain distance and contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well with the same radius. We investigate the dependence on the cutoff radius of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the low partial waves in $\overline{N}N$ scattering. We show that renormalization requires additional contact interactions compared to the expectation based on naive dimensional analysis. Results after renormalization are compared with the state-of-the-art energy-dependent partial-wave analysis of $\overline{N}N$ data. We compare our conclusions with applications of $\chi$EFT to the nucleon-nucleon system.

X Y Z spectroscopy at electron-hadron facilities. III. Semi-inclusive processes with vector exchange

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of X Y Z states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the χ c 1 ( 1 P ) and X ( 3872 ) , whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of vector meson dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near the threshold to be enhanced by a factor of ∼ 2 – 3 compared to the exclusive reaction and well-suited for a first observation in photoproduction. Calculating the two-photon exchange contribution to K L → μ + μ − decay

We present a theoretical framework within which both the real and imaginary parts of the complex, two-photon exchange amplitude contributing to K L → μ + μ − decay can be calculated using lattice quantum chromodynamics. The real part of this two-photon amplitude is of approximately the same size as that coming from a second-order weak strangeness-changing neutral-current process. Thus a test of the standard model prediction for this second-order weak process depends on an accurate result of this two-photon amplitude. A limiting factor of our proposed method comes from low-energy three-particle π π γ states. The contribution from these states will be significantly distorted by the finite volume of our calculation—a distortion for which there is no available correction. However, a simple estimate of the contribution of these three-particle states suggests their contribution to be at most a few percent allowing their neglect in a lattice calculation with a 10% target accuracy. Demonstration of collinear factorization breaking due to collinear-to-soft Glauber exchanges for a 2 → 3 exclusive process at leading twist

We exhibit an exclusive process, namely the photoproduction of a π 0 γ pair with large invariant mass, which violates collinear factorization. We explicitly demonstrate that this is due to the fact that there exists diagrams with gluon exchange in t channel, contributing at the leading power, for which are . This is caused by the pinching of the contour integration of the plus and minus light-cone components of the Glauber gluon momentum. We argue that this leads to the observed “end pointlike” divergence of the convolution integral at leading order and leading power when collinear factorization is naïvely assumed. Unusual Exchange Couplings and Intermediate Temperature Weyl State in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Understanding magnetism and its possible correlations to topological properties has emerged to the forefront as a difficult topic in studying magnetic Weyl semimetals. Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 is a newly discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal with a kagome lattice of cobalt ions and has triggered intense interest for rich fantastic phenomena. In this study, we report the magnetic exchange couplings of Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 using inelastic neutron scattering and two density functional theory (DFT) based methods: constrained magnetism and multiple-scattering Green’s function methods. Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 exhibits highly anisotropic magnon dispersions and linewidths below T C , and paramagnetic excitations above T C . The spin-wave spectra in the ferromagnetic ground state is well described by the dominant third-neighbor “across-hexagon” J d model. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that both the symmetry-allowed 120° antiferromagnetic orders support Weyl points in the intermediate temperature region, with distinct numbers and the locations of Weyl points. Our study highlights the important role Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 can play in advancing our understanding of kagome physics and exploring the interplay between magnetism and band topology.

Arrested Phase Separation in Double-Exchange Models: Large-Scale Simulation Enabled by Machine Learning

In this work, we present large-scale dynamical simulations of electronic phase separation in the single-band double-exchange model based on deep-learning neural-network potentials trained from small-size exact diagonalization solutions. We uncover an intriguing correlation-induced freezing behavior as doped holes are segregated from half filled insulating background during equilibration. While the aggregation of holes is stabilized by the formation of ferromagnetic clusters through Hund’s coupling between charge carriers and local magnetic moments, this stabilization also creates confining potentials for holes when antiferromagnetic spin-spin correlation is well developed in the background. The dramatically reduced mobility of the self-trapped holes prematurely disrupts further growth of the ferromagnetic clusters, leading to an arrested phase separation. Implications of our findings for phase separation dynamics in materials that exhibit colossal magnetoresistance effect are discussed.

Form Factors and Two-Photon Exchange in High-Energy Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering

We report new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer squared (Q$^2$) up to 15.75 (GeV/c)$^2$. These data allow for improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and nearly double the Q$^2$ range of direct longitudinal/transverse separated cross sections. A comparison of our results to polarization measurements establishes the presence of hard two-photon exchange in the $e$-$p$ elastic scattering cross section at > 95 % confidence level for Q$^2$ up to 8 (GeV/c)$^2$.

Dynamic Response of an Electron Gas: Towards the Exact Exchange-Correlation Kernel

Precise calculations of dynamics in the homogeneous electron gas (jellium model) are of fundamental importance for design and characterization of new materials. In this work, we introduce a diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique based on algorithmic Matsubara integration that allows us to compute frequency and momentum resolved finite temperature response directly in the real frequency domain using series of connected Feynman diagrams. The data for charge response at moderate electron density are used to extract the frequency dependence of the exchange-correlation kernel at finite momenta and temperature. These results are as important for development of the time-dependent density functional theory for materials dynamics as ground state energies are for the density functional theory.

Exchange-Driven Intermixing of Bulk and Topological Surface States by Chiral Excitons in Bi 2 Se 3

Topological surface states (TSS) in the prototypical topological insulator (TI) Bi 2 Se 3 are frequently characterized using optical probes, but electron-hole interactions and their effect on surface localization and optical response of the TSS remain unexplored. Here, we use ab initio calculations to understand excitonic effects in the bulk and surface of Bi 2 Se 3 . We identify multiple series of chiral excitons that exhibit both bulk and TSS character, due to exchange-driven mixing. Further, our results address fundamental questions about the degree to which electron-hole interactions can relax the topological protection of surface states and dipole selection rules for circularly polarized light in TIs by elucidating the complex intermixture of bulk and surface states excited in optical measurements and their coupling to light.

First Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry in the Pure W -Boson-Exchange Decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K +

Based on 4.4 fb − 1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure W -boson-exchange decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K + is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be α Ξ 0 K + = 0.01 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.03 ( syst ) . This result reflects the noninterference effect between the S - and P -wave amplitudes. The phase shift between S - and P -wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are δ p − δ s = − 1.55 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad or 1.59 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad . Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions from 𝑡-Channel String Exchange in AdS Spaces

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that is valid for all skewness. Our approach leverages conformal moments, representing them as the sum of spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐴-form factor and skewness-dependent spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐷-form factor, derived from 𝑡-channel string exchange in AdS spaces consistent with Lorentz invariance and unitarity. This model-independent framework, satisfying the polynomiality condition due to Lorentz invariance, uses Mellin moments from empirical data to estimate these form factors. With just five Regge slope parameters, our method accurately produces various nucleon quark GPD types and symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs through pertinent Mellin-Barnes integrals. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data, promising to improve the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, by avoiding the deconvolution problem at any skewness, for the first time.

Range-separated thermal hybrid exchange-correlation density functional for accurate band-gap calculations of warm dense matter

Here, in this study, we present a range-separated thermal hybrid exchange-correlation (XC) functional, termed RS-KDT0, which provides highly accurate band-gap predictions at elevated temperature while reducing the computational cost relative to thermal global hybrid functionals. At zero temperature, RS-KDT0 recovers the widely used ground-state range-separated hybrid functional HSE06. To assess its performance across temperature regimes, we conducted static calculations of electronic pressure, band gaps, and band structures. RS-KDT0 exhibits the same level of accuracy as HSE06 in the low-temperature regime and demonstrates improved agreement with finite-temperature GW calculations at elevated temperatures when compared to other thermal XC functionals such as the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)-level KDT16 and the global hybrid KDT0.

A Data Exchange Interface for a Standards Based Data Integration Platform

The modern electrical grid is a complex and a data rich system, requiring several sub-systems to provide the capability and support needed to perform functions such as distributed energy resource management, outage management, and fault location and isolation, to name a few. There is a need to develop software solutions and platforms that provide an integrated infrastructure to allow interoperability between these subsystems, while leveraging the abundant data available from today’s grid. In this paper, we present the development and deployment of an application service to integrate GridAPPS-D which is an open source, standards-based software platform with SurvalentONE, a commonly used DNP3 based ADMS platform that allows operation, monitoring, analysis, restoration, and optimization of network operations. We present details of the integration architecture, including its implementation, and provide results from functional testing of the architecture on a 13 bus IEEE system. The results validate that the integration is successful and is able to provide a two-way exchange of communication and translation between different communication protocols.
