Single-Photon Generation: Materials, Techniques, and the Rydberg Exciton Frontier

Due to their quantum nature, single-photon emitters (SPE) generate individual photons in bursts or streams. They are paramount in emerging quantum technologies such as quantum key distribution, quantum repeaters, and measurement-based quantum computing. Many such systems have been reported in the last three decades, from rubidium atoms coupled to cavities to semiconductor quantum dots and color centers implanted in waveguides. This review article highlights different solid-state and atomic systems with on-demand and controlled single-photon generation. We discuss and compare the performance metrics, such as purity and indistinguishability, for these sources and evaluate their potential for different applications. Finally, a new potential single-photon source, based on the Rydberg exciton in solid-state metal oxide thin films, is introduced, where we discuss its promising features and unique advantages in fabricating quantum chips for quantum photonic applications.

Inference of Induced Fracture Geometries Using Fiber-Optic Distributed Strain Sensing in Hydraulic Fracture Test Site 2

Fiber-optic Distributed Strain Sensor observations in a vertical well allow rapid inference of the time evolution of nearby hydraulic fracture heights and their vertical aperture distributions during stimulation and depressurization. We describe a computationally efficient deconvolutional model based on an elastostatic kernel for fracture opening within an isotropic, homogeneous, linear elastic medium. Furthermore, an application of this model to observations from the Hydraulic Fracture Test Site 2 reveals that ultimate fracture heights are typically greater than those indicated by microseismic monitoring, and some hydraulic fractures continue their upward growth for several hours after high-pressure injections ceased.

tell: a Python package to model future total electricity loads in the United States

The purpose of the Total ELectricity Load (tell) model is to generate 21st century profiles of hourly electricity load (demand) across the Conterminous United States (CONUS). tell loads reflect the impact of climate and socioeconomic change at a spatial and temporal resolution adequate for input to an electricity grid operations model. tell uses machine learning to develop profiles that are driven by projections of climate/meteorology and population. tell also harmonizes its results with United States (U.S.) state-level, annual projections from a national- to global-scale energy-economy model. This model accounts for a wide range of other factors affecting electricity demand, including technology change in the building sector, energy prices, and demand elasticities, which stems from model coupling with the U.S. version of the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM-USA). tell was developed as part of the Integrated Multisector Multiscale Modeling (IM3) project. IM3 explores the vulnerability and resilience of interacting energy, water, land, and urban systems in response to compound stressors, such as climate trends, extreme events, population, urbanization, energy system transitions, and technology change

baseflow: a MATLAB and GNU Octave package for baseflow recession analysis

baseflow is a MATLAB® toolbox designed for baseflow recession analysis, a technique used in hydrologic science to infer aquifer properties from streamflow. By leveraging widely available streamflow data, baseflow can be used to estimate aquifer properties such as hydraulic conductivity and drainable porosity over the modern instrumental stream gage record. The toolbox is intended for analysis of measured streamflow values recorded on a daily timestep, and is tailored for shallow, unconfined riparian aquifers that discharge groundwater laterally into adjacent streams. Additionally, baseflow can analyze the collective behavior of individual hillslope aquifers constituting hydrologic catchments, known as “watersheds”, from a nonlinear dynamical systems perspective. The toolbox incorporates recent advances in baseflow recession analysis to enable objective estimations of aquifer properties, and their sensitivity to methodological decisions, at both hillslope and catchment scales.

On symmetry-resolved generalized entropies

Symmetry-resolved entanglement, capturing the refined structure of quantum entanglement in systems with global symmetries, has attracted a lot of attention recently. In this manuscript, introducing the notion of symmetry-resolved generalized entropies, we aim to develop a computational framework suitable for the study of excited state symmetry-resolved entanglement as well as the dynamical evolution of symmetry-resolved entanglement in symmetry-preserving out-of-equilibrium settings. We illustrate our framework using the example of (1+1)-d free massless compact boson theory, and benchmark our results using lattice computation in the XX chain. As a byproduct, our computational framework also provides access to the probability distribution of the symmetry charge contained within a subsystem and the corresponding full counting statistics.

CReST-VCT System Integration Framework

In this paper, we propose a system integration framework for deploying the Coordinated Real-time Sub-Transmission Volt-var Control Tool (CReST VCT) functionality between the transmission system, the distribution system, and DERs. This represents one possible set of design choices to implement the coordinated optimization capabilities in an operating environment. The framework provides the following: An architectural reference model that describes how the CReST VCT solution maps into a broader grid architecture that accommodates and enables higher levels of DER penetration and utilization: A system integration reference model that defines a possible allocation of CReST VCT functionality within a utility’s operational environment. This includes one possible system design approach for allocation of functionality within software and protocol selections across the various interfaces; A list of potential performance and security issues that should be considered during an implementation. This framework does not represent a specific implementation of the CReST VCT algorithm or integration into a specific utility environment. It is intended to serve as a reference for those who plan to implement such a solution into their environment. The general model provided by the framework can be tailored to a specific environment based on its specific constraints and requirements.

CRADA Final Report: Open Microgrid Platform

Current microgrid control technology is mostly proprietary, expensive, and inflexible. An open-source, vendor-neutral, publish-subscribe controller will significantly lower the barrier to entry for new technologies and market entrants: inverter, battery, and load control manufacturers; cloud and services providers; and energy aggregators. An OpenFMB controller can significantly reduce the acquisition, integration, and ongoing operating and maintenance costs and increase revenue opportunities for energy producers and consumers. It allows distributed energy resource (DER) owners to replace individual DER components as richer-function, lower-cost devices become available or to incorporate new forecast and optimization algorithms as they are developed. A standard, secure, full-function DER field controller will also provide a low-cost means for grid operators to effectively manage the variability and uncertainty of solar photovoltaics (PV). Under the terms of this CRADA, ORNL has worked with Open Energy Solutions (OES) to advance the transition of ORNL’s existing open-source microgrid controller into a platform geared toward mainstream implementation. Using a more prevalent and memory-safe programming language, Rust, OES has converted ORNL’s current generation on-grid optimization into an application more suitable for industry use. The results of the ported optimization were analyzed by inputting the same arguments in both the current-generation and next-generation optimizers and verifying that the results were equivalent.

Cybersecurity Certification Recommendations for Interconnected Grid Edge Devices and Inverter Based Resources

Escalating deployment of PV and grid-edge devices on the distribution grid has increased the sustainability and efficiency of the electric grid. However, the increasing number of distributed energy resources (DERs) deployed creates a heightened cyber-physical interdependency on the distribution grid and thus creates more vectors for cyber-attacks to exploit through information and communication technology (ICT) systems and networks. For example, control signal packets can be modified, intercepted, or corrupted due to vulnerabilities in communication protocols used by microgrid controllers and grid edge devices for power control. Therefore, to mitigate and prevent cyber-attacks on grid edge devices and the inverter-based resources connected to the distribution grid, the U.S. Department of Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) awarded funding to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) to research, develop, and harmonize cybersecurity standards for Photovoltaic (PV) systems and for other kinds of DERs. To help develop a standard for DER cybersecurity, NREL established certification recommendations and test cases, in consensus with the solar industry and UL, for ensuring intrinsic design security for DERs. These recommendations were developed to bolster the cybersecure functionalities such as TLS, MAC, CRL, session resumption/renegotiation, and password, system, and service security management within the DER devices. The proposed test cases verify authentication, authorization, confidentiality, and data integrity for data and communications of DERs that use Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). They were also developed to protect DER communications from eavesdropping, replay, man-in-the-middle, denial of service (DoS), spoofing through security certificates, least-privilege violation, and brute-force credentials. This report, which has been validated and reviewed by UL, expands upon those test cases to provide DER cybersecurity certification recommendations which increase DER resiliency and help to mitigate cyber-attacks. UL's collaboration with NREL and approval of this document will accelerate the adoption of a UL standard for DER cybersecurity.

Cambium Documentation: Version 2021

Cambium is a tool that assembles structured data sets of simulated hourly emission, cost, and operational data for modeled futures of the U.S. electric sector with metrics designed to be useful for long-term decision-making. It was built to expand the metrics reported in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Standard Scenarios - an annually released set of projections of how the U.S. electric sector could evolve across a suite of different potential futures, looking forward through 2050 (Cole et al. 2021) Information about Cambium and related publications can be found at https://nrel.gov/analysis/cambium.html, and the Cambium data sets for the Standard Scenarios can be viewed and downloaded at https://cambium.nrel.gov/. In this documentation, we define the metrics reported in Cambium databases (Section 4) and document the Cambium-specific methods for calculating those metrics (Section 5). As this document is intended to cover multiple Cambium data releases, we do not document specific scenarios here - for individual data releases, readers should look for an accompanying report that describes the assumptions and data that underlie that specific release. For Cambium databases that are built on NREL's Standard Scenarios, for example, reports describing the scenarios can be found on the Standard Scenarios web site (https://www.nrel.gov/analysis/standard-scenarios.html).

Exploring Si Heterojunction Solar Cell Degradation: Bulk and Interface Processes Analyzed by Simulations and Experiments in Order to Develop Mitigation Strategies

The Si technology with the highest conversion efficiency is a-Si/c-Si heterojunction (HJ) PV. Its market penetration, however, is slowed by reports that fielded HJ modules degraded at twice the rate of regular c-Si modules. Our very recent work confirmed this degradation and attributed it to enhanced recombination at the a-Si/c-Si interface, caused by the slow, order-of-magnitude increase of the defect density. We propose to comprehensively explore degradation mechanisms in Si HJ cells by combining simulations and experiments. Theoretically, we will: (1) simulate structure of a-Si and a-Si/c-Si interfaces, identify defects; (2) determine statistics of energy barriers that control defect formation; (3) compute growth of defect density from the barrier distribution, and the resulting degradation of Voc. Experimentally, we will: (1) create a series of HJ-cell-representative stacks with varying layer thicknesses and deposition conditions by using PECVD tools; (2) use temperature and injection-dependent lifetime spectroscopy to determine effective lifetimes; (3) deconvolve the data to separate bulk and interface effects, and the effects of charge density and interface defects to analyze long time degradation. The goal is to identify material and device degradation mechanisms, to develop mitigation strategies for improved stability, such as the introduction of capping layers and hydrogen diffusion control.
