Magnetic Diffuse Scattering of YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 on Kagome and Triangular Lattices

In this work, the magnetic diffuse scattering of YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 with alternating kagome and triangular lattices has been studied through neutron scattering measurements on single-crystal samples. In YBaCo 4 O 7 , the line-shape-magnetic-diffuse scattering is observed around the magnetic transition temperature, which is consistent with the Monte Carlo simulation. In LuBaCo 4 O 7 , the line-shape-magnetic-diffuse scattering has not been detected. At low temperature, the propagation vectors of the observed magnetic reflections are different between YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 . The structural distortion in RBaCo 4 O 7 is suggested to play a critical role for the magnetic properties.

Metallic diffusion measured by a modified Knudsen technique

Diffusion coefficient of a metal in high temperature system is determined. From the measurement of the weight loss from a Knudsen cell, the vapor pressure of the escaping species can be calculated. If the only way this species can enter the Knudsen cell is by diffusion through a foil, the weight loss is diffusion flux.

Solutions for Reacting and Nonreacting Viscous Shock Layers with Multicomponent Diffusion and Mass Injection

Numerical solutions are presented for the viscous shocklayer equations where the chemistry is treated as being either frozen, equilibrium, or nonequilibrium. Also the effects of the diffusion model, surface catalyticity, and mass injection on surface transport and flow parameters are considered. The equilibrium calculations for air species using multicomponent: diffusion provide solutions previously unavailable. The viscous shock-layer equations are solved by using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The flow is treated as a mixture of inert and thermally perfect species. Also the flow is assumed to be in vibrational equilibrium. All calculations are for a 45 deg hyperboloid. The flight conditions are those for various altitudes and velocities in the earth's atmosphere. Data are presented showing the effects of the chemical models; diffusion models; surface catalyticity; and mass injection of air, water, and ablation products on heat transfer; skin friction; shock stand-off distance; wall pressure distribution; and tangential velocity, temperature, and species profiles.

Composition dependence of ion diffusion coefficients in gas mixtures at arbitrary field strengths

Expressions for the diffusion coefficient of ions in gas mixtures are obtained from momentum transfer theory, and are given in terms of the diffusion coefficients and drift velocities of the ions in the pure component gases. Blanc's law holds exactly at all field strengths if the mean free time between collisions is independent of velocity (Maxwell model), but otherwise there may be either positive or negative deviations from Blanc's law at high fields. Such deviations are of comparable magnitude for the diffusion coefficients and the mobility, but are not identical. Specific cases of inverse-power potentials are treated in further detail, and some numerical examples are given for rigid-sphere interactions.

Comparison of aerogrids and punched plates for smoothing flow from short annular diffusers

Scale model tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of aerogrids and punched plates in producing flat velocity profiles downstream of short diffusers as would be used between the compressor and combustor of advanced aircraft engines. The diffuser had an area ratio of 4.17 and a length-to-inlet-height ratio of 2.07. The aerogrids tested were plates containing 1123 contoured venturis in parallel with geometric blockages of 83, 74, and 61 percent, respectively. The punched plates contained 1123 sharp-edged orifices with blockages of 58 and 30 percent. The results show that aerogrids, with higher effective blockage for the same pressure loss, are more effective flow-smoothing devices than the punched plates. Also, the overall pressure loss decreases and the exit velocity profile becomes flatter as either type of grid is moved closer to the diffuser exit plane.

Self-diffusion of carbon and oxygen in dolomite.

Self-diffusion of carbon and oxygen in dolomite was measured by isotopic exchange with CO2 at 645-785 C at 120-935 bars pressure. Several runs were also made with calcite under comparable experimental conditions. The principal findings of this study are that (1) the self-diffusion coefficients of both carbon and oxygen in dolomite are approximately 100 times larger than the values in calcite over the temperature range investigated and (2) oxygen self-diffusion in calcite is accelerated by high CO2 pressure.

Cosmic-ray diffusion coefficient in interplanetary space.

The authors of three recent papers reporting cosmic-ray electron differential intensities near the earth during 1966 and 1968 in the rigidity range above 500 MV have concluded that the observations are not compatible with a diffusion coefficient that can be written as a product of a rigidity-dependent part and a part that is a function of heliocentric distance. It is shown in this paper that, with an interstellar electron spectrum and a near-earth spectrum given, a diffusion coefficient of the above form can always be determinedand the conclusion noted above cannot be sustained. Diffusion coefficients appropriate to the observations are given.

Augmentation of heat transfer by subsonic diffusion at a nearly separated state

Measurements of mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and wall heat transfer were obtained in a 13 deg total angle of divergence conical diffuser coupled to a constant diameter recovery section. The results indicated that the boundary layer was in a nearly separated state. Turbulence intensity levels approaching 0.4 were observed in the latter stages of diffusion. The convective heat transfer was always equal to or higher than corresponding values for fully developed pipe flow at the same Reynolds number. The augmentation in heat transfer was greatest during the latter stages of diffusion where the Stanton number was nearly three times the pipe flow value.

Hydrogen adsorption and diffusion, and subcritical-crack growth in high strength steels and nickel base alloys

Embrittlement, or the enhancement of crack growth by gaseous hydrogen in high strength alloys, is of primary interest in selecting alloys for various components in the space shuttle. Embrittlement is known to occur at hydrogen gas pressures ranging from fractions to several hundred atmospheres, and is most severe in the case of martensitic high strength steels. Kinetic information on subcritical crack growth in gaseous hydrogen is sparse at this time. Corroborative information on hydrogen adsorption and diffusion is inadequate to permit a clear determination of the rate controlling process and possible mechanism in hydrogen enhanced crack growth, and for estimating behavior over a range of temperatures and pressures. Therefore, coordinated studies of the kinetics of crack growth, and adsorption and diffusion of hydrogen, using identical materials, have been initiated. Comparable conditions of temperature and pressure will be used in the chemical and mechanical experiments. Inconel 718 alloy and 18Ni(200) maraging steel have been selected for these studies. Results from these studies are expected to provide not only a better understanding of the gaseous hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon itself, but also fundamental information on hydrogen adsorption and diffusion, and crack growth information that can be used directly for design.

Effect of bottom topography, eddy diffusivity, and wind variation on circulation in a two-layer stratified lake

The steady-state, wind-driven circulation is calculated in a stratified lake composed of two layers having uniform but unequal densities and eddy diffusivities. The position of the thermocline and the velocities in both layers are calculated from an asymptotic solution of the shallow lake equations when the Ekman number in the epilimnion (upper layer) is of order one but the ratio of hypolimnion (lower layer) to epilimnion eddy diffusivities is much less than one. Large differences in the thermocline shape and the velocities occur between the solution for uniform wind stress and the one for unit order wind stress gradients. For the latter solution the hypolimnion eddy diffusivity magnitude and the bottom topography have a large and important effect.

Space simulation ultimate pressure lowered two decades by removal of diffusion pump oil contaminants during operation

The complex problem why large space simulation chambers do not realize the true ultimate vacuum was investigated. Some contaminating factors affecting diffusion pump performance have been identified and some advances in vacuum/distillation/fractionation technology have been achieved which resulted in a two decade or more lower ultimate pressure. Data are presented to show the overall or individual contaminating effect of commonly used phthalate ester plasticizers of 390 to 530 molecular weight on diffusion pump performance. Methods for removing contaminants from diffusion pump silicone oil during operation and reclaiming contaminated oil by high vacuum molecular distillation are described.

The development and preliminary application of an invariant coupled diffusion and chemistry model

In many real-world pollution chemical reaction problems, the rate of reaction problems, the rate of reaction may be greatly affected by unmixedness. An approximate closure scheme for a chemical kinetic submodel which conforms to the principles of invariant modeling and which accounts for the effects of inhomogeneous mixing over a wide range of conditions has been developed. This submodel has been coupled successfully with invariant turbulence and diffusion models, permitting calculation of two-dimensional diffusion of two reacting (isothermally) chemical species. The initial calculations indicate the ozone reactions in the wake of stratospheric aircraft will be substantially affected by the rate of diffusion of ozone into the wake, and in the early wake, by unmixedness.

Pressure recovery performance of conical diffusers at high subsonic Mach numbers

The pressure recovery performance of conical diffusers has been measured for a wide range of geometries and inlet flow conditions. The approximate level and location (in terms of diffuser geometry of optimum performance were determined. Throat Mach numbers from low subsonic (m sub t equals 0.2) through choking (m sub t equals 1.0) were investigated in combination with throat blockage from 0.03 to 0.12. For fixed Mach number, performance was measured over a fourfold range of inlet Reynolds number. Maps of pressure recovery are presented as a function of diffuser geometry for fixed sets of inlet conditions. The influence of inlet blockage, throat Mach number, and inlet Reynolds number is discussed.

Monte-Carlo analysis of rarefied-gas diffusion including variance reduction using the theory of Markov random walks

Molecular diffusion through a rarefied gas is analyzed by using the theory of Markov random walks. The Markov walk is simulated on the computer by using random numbers to find the new states from the appropriate transition probabilities. As the sample molecule during its random walk passes a scoring position, which is a location at which the macroscopic diffusing flow variables such as molecular flux and molecular density are desired, an appropriate payoff is scored. The payoff is a function of the sample molecule velocity. For example, in obtaining the molecular flux across a scoring position, the random walk payoff is the net number of times the scoring position has been crossed in the positive direction. Similarly, when the molecular density is required, the payoff is the sum of the inverse velocity of the sample molecule passing the scoring position. The macroscopic diffusing flow variables are then found from the expected payoff of the random walks.

O(minus 2) grain boundary diffusion and grain growth in pure dense MgO

Grain growth behavior in fully dense compacts of MgO of very high purity was studied, and the results compared with other similar behaving materials. The activation energy for the intrinsic self-diffusion of Mg(2minus) is discussed along with the grain boundary diffusion of O(2minus). Grain boundary diffusion of O(2minus) is proposed as the controlling mechanism for grain growth.

A study of the unidentified interstellar diffuse features.

The interstellar diffuse lines at 5780 and 5797 A have been observed in 66 stars using the Washburn Observatory echelle spectrograph coupled with an image tube. At a resolution of 0.17 A, the profiles of these diffuse lines are asymmetric and steeper to the blue. There is also a broad, shallow feature shortward of 5780 A. The FWHM of 5780 and 5797 are respectively 2.7 A and 1.1 A. Equivalent widths of 5780, 5797 have been measured at a resolution of 0.26 A, and they present a very tight correlation. It is very likely that these two diffuse lines are carried by the same agent. This investigation proposes that the two lines are produced by the pure electronic transitions of the impurity centers in solid grains, with the broad, shallow absorption feature shortward of 5780 A as the absorption sideband associated with the parent pure electronic line.

Dynamics of moisture diffusion through a partially liquid filled porous matrix.

Models for unsteady water transport in fuel cell configurations of Bacon-Pratt and Whitney type are derived. Tests with a specially constructed isothermal cell producing no water and order of magnitude analysis show that diffusion through the liquid alone cannot account for the observed behavior. An analytical solution which includes diffusion in both the liquid and the gas spaces of the matrix is in better agreement with the data than models which consider diffusion in either the liquid or in the gas phase alone.
