Developing breakthroughs in accelerator science and translating them into applications for the nation’s health, wealth and security.
Robust electro-static (ES) device embodiments, with application to energy storage flywheels as an example, are described that provide reliable, high-efficiency operation in the presence of thermal and mechanical perturbations, as well as seismic events. Electro-static generators and motors, when augmented with magnetic bearings, passive three-dimensional stabilization techniques and dynamic touch-down bearings, enable robust performance in the face of these environmental concerns, as well as efficient operation during typical operational sequences, including spin-up and steady-state modalities.

This paper presents a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform to evaluate the performance of voltage regulation using an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) for grid operations to control legacy and grid-edge voltage control devices and coordinate with distributed energy management systems (DERMS) to manage high penetrations of photovoltaics (PV) on a utility distribution system. The HIL platform provides realistic laboratory testing, including accurate modeling (legacy devices, grid-edge devices, and PV) of the real-world distribution system from a utility partner, a real controller (ADMS), software controller DERMS, hardware grid-edge devices, and standard communications protocols. The test results show proper functionalities of the integrated platform and the performance of voltage regulation of the coordinated control systems. Based on laboratory testing, the utility can set up the same grid-automation system to manage DERs, legacy devices, and grid-edge devices to achieve their system-level control and operation objectives (e.g., voltage regulation), thus de-risking potential issues (e.g., instability) for field deployment.

Systems and methods for cooling include one or more computing structures, a heat rejection system configured to cool coolant, and one or more heat exchangers configured to selectively transfer heat from coolant in the intra-structure cooling system to coolant in the heat rejection system. Each computing structure includes one or more cooled servers and an intra-structure cooling system configured to selectively provide coolant to the one or more cooled servers. A controller is configured to adjust cooling of the coolant in accordance with ambient temperature information, to decrease cooling of the coolant if the coolant temperature falls below a first coolant threshold temperature by disengaging one or more heat exchangers, and to turn on additional servers if the coolant temperature is below the first cool and threshold and all heat exchangers have been disengaged.
