Design and Operation of a Multi-Bed Catalytic Micro-Reactor for the Study of Co-Processing of Bio-Oils with VGO

An industry wide shift from fossil-based fuel to renewable fuel sources including biomass, municipal waste, and plastics will require new process monitoring methods to minimize transitional risks including off specification product formation and catalyst deactivation. This project aims to provide a machine learning based process monitoring tool composed of online, slipstream mass spectra for use in biomass refineries and co-processing in existing refineries allowing operators to monitor product qualities and adjust process conditions accordingly. In order to maximize the robustness of the tool, large volumes of data must be collected to fine tune model parameters which consists of both micro and pilot scale mass spectral data. Micro-scale data is collected with a multi-tube micro-reactor housing up to six catalysts in horizontal beds, coupled with a molecular beam mass spectrometer. A pyrolizer equipped with an auto-sampler streamlines the micro-scale data collection process. This type of pyrolizer/micro-reactor configuration does not exist on the market, and therefore had to be created for the purposes of this project. The design and commissioning of this reactor will be presented in detail. This reactor set-up is highly flexible and increases throughput of analysis. For catalyst testing, each bed can be individually selected simply by turning valves. For catalyst reduction and regeneration, simultaneous flow through all six beds is used. The reproducibility of the system was first assessed with whole biomass pyrolysis along with pyrolysis of calibration standards. Initial work on this system evaluated two FCC catalysts, equilibrium catalyst (E-cat), and a proprietary catalyst from Johnson Matthey specifically design for co-processing of bio-oil with vacuum gas oil (VGO). This work used model compounds and VGO which illuminated differences in products produced by the catalysts.

Passive selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and method for low-temperature combustion (LTC) engine

A combustion mode module is configured to switch operation of a low-temperature combustion (LTC) engine between a spark ignition (SI) mode, a positive valve overlap (PVO) mode, and a negative valve overlap (NVO) mode. A spark control module is configured to control a spark plug to generate a spark in a cylinder of the LTC engine when the LTC engine is operating in the SI mode. A valve control module is configured to control intake and exhaust valves of the cylinder to yield a PVO and a NVO when the LTC engine is operating in the PVO mode and the NVO mode, respectively. An air/fuel (A/F) control module is configured to adjust a desired A/F ratio of the LTC engine to a rich A/F ratio when operation of the LTC engine is switched to the PVO mode from either one of the SI mode and the NVO mode.

Co-Processing Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oils and Hydrothermal Liquefaction Biocrudes in Fluid Catalytic Cracking and Hydroprocessing in Refineries

Co-processing of biogenic feedstocks within the existing petroleum infrastructure represents an opportunity to incorporate large volumes of bio-carbon into transportation fuels. However, upgrading intermediate liquids from biomass and waste to final products efficiently and economically, while minimizing impacts to existing refinery infrastructure, remains a notable barrier to commercialization. The co-processing project, Bio-oil Co-processing with Refinery Streams, aimed to generate foundational knowledge for processing renewable intermediates in petroleum refineries and offer co-processing strategies, as well as develop new methods for biogenic carbon tracking and measurement.

Stochastic Kinetics of Nanocatalytic Systems

Catalytic reaction events occurring on the surface of a nanoparticle constitute a complex stochastic process. Although advances in modern single-molecule experiments enable direct measurements of individual catalytic turnover events occurring on a segment of a single nanoparticle, we do not yet know how to measure the number of catalytic sites in each segment or how the catalytic turnover counting statistics and the catalytic turnover time distribution are related to the microscopic dynamics of catalytic reactions. Here, we address these issues by presenting a stochastic kinetics for nanoparticle catalytic systems. We propose a new experimental measure of the number of catalytic sites in terms of the mean and variance of the catalytic event count. By considering three types of nanocatalytic systems, we investigate how the mean, the variance, and the distribution of the catalytic turnover time depend on the catalytic reaction dynamics, the heterogeneity of catalytic activity, and communication among catalytic sites. This work enables accurate quantitative analyses of single-molecule experiments for nanocatalytic systems and enzymes with multiple catalytic sites.
