Dynamics of change of lipid and monoamine metabolisms and the blood coagulation system during experimental atherosclerosis caused by restriction of movement

Shifts in lipid, catecholamine, and blood coagulation systems following various periods (1, 2, 3, and 4 months) of experimentally induced atherosclerosis were studied. The same indices were studied in the tissues of the myocardium, liver, and brain stem-reticular formation after decapitation of the animals at the end of the experiment. Periodic motion restriction caused an increase in blood beta-lipoproteins in the rabbits at the beginning of the experiment. An increase in general cholesterol content and a decrease in the lecithincholesterol index were established at the end of the experiment. Myocardial beta-lipoprotein and brain stem reticular formation general cholesterol contents were elevated; catecholamine content was increased at the end of the experiment. In the initial months, free adrenaline basically increased, while in later months blood adrenaline decreased and blood noradrenaline increased.

The electric potential of particles in interstellar space released from a nuclear waste payload

Mechanisms for charging a grain in the interplanetary medium include: (1) capture of solar wind electrons; (2) capture of solar wind protons; (3) ejection of electrons through the photoelectric effect due to the solar radiation; (4) escape of beta particles from beta emitters in the grain; and (5) escape of alpha particles from alpha emitters in the grain. The potentials on both nonradioactive and radioactive grains are considered with relation to particle size and time, and the distance from the Sun. Numerical results are presented where the waste mix is assumed to be PW-4b.

STS-1 operational flight profile. Volume 3: Ascent, cycle 3

The ascent opeational flight profile for the space transportation system 1 flight is designed (1) to limit the maximum undispersed dynamic pressure to 580 lb/sq ft, (2) to follow the design load indicator profiles where q alpha is a specified profile and q beta is desired to be as close to zero as passible, and (3) to maximize nominal and abort performance. Significant trajectory parameters achieved are presented. A maximum dynamic pressure of 575 lb/sq ft was achieved, a minimum q alpha of -2187 lb-deg/sq ft was achieved, and q beta was limited to approximately + or - 100 lb-deg/sq ft in the high q region of the trajectory. The trajectory performance allows a press to main engine cutoff capability with one space shuttle main engine out at 262 seconds ground elapsed time. The orbital maneuvering system burns achieve a final orbit of 150.9 x 149.9 x 149.8 n. mi. and the desired inclination of 40.3 degrees.

Effect of starting powder characteristics on density, microstructure and low temperature oxidation behavior of a Si3N48w/o Y2O3 ceramic

The densification and oxidation behavior of Si3N4 - 8w/oY2O3 prepared from three commercial starting powders were studied. Bars of SN 402, SN 502, and CP 85/15 were sintered for 3 to 4.5 hours at 1750 C. A second set was hot pressed for 2 hours at 1750 C. The microstructures were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, densities were determined, and the phase compositions were determined by X-ray diffraction. Densification and microstructure were greatly influenced by the starting powder morphology and impurity content. Although SN 402 exhibited the maximum weight lose, the highest sintered and hot pressed densities were obtained with this powder. All powders had both equiaxed and elongated grains. Sintered bars were composed of beta silicon nitride and n-melelite. In contrast, hot pressed bars contained beta silicon nitride, H-phase, and J-phase, but no melelite. Yttria distribution in sintered bars was related to the presence of cation impurities such as Ca, Fe, and Mg. A limited oxidation study at 750 C in air showed no instability in these Si3N4 - 8 w/oY2O3 specimens, regardless of startin powder.

Elevated temperature flow strength, creep resistance and diffusion welding characteristics of Ti-6Al-2Nb-1Ta-0.8Mo

A study of the flow strength, creep resistance and diffusion welding characteristics of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Nb-1Ta-0.8Mo has been conducted. Two mill-processed forms of this alloy were examined. The forged material had been processed above the beta transus (approximately 1275 K) while the rolled form had been subjected to work below the beta transus. Between 1150 and 1250 K, the forged material was stronger and more creep resistant than the rolled alloy. Both forms exhibit superplastic characteristics in this temperature range. Strain measurements during diffusion welding experiments at 1200 K reveal that weld interfaces have no measurable effect on the overall creep deformation. Significant deformation appears to be necessary to produce a quality diffusion weld between superplastic materials. A 'soft' interlayer inserted between faying surfaces would seemingly allow manufacture of quality diffusion welds with little overall deformation.

Performance of the Zeeman analyzer system of the McDonald Observatory 2.7 meter telescope

The paper describes a multichannel photoelectric Zeeman analyzer at the coude spectrograph of the McDonald 2.7 m reflector. A comparison of Lick and McDonald observations of HD 153882 reveals no significant difference in slopes or zero points of the two magnetic fields indicating that the systematic scale difference of 30-40% is probably instrumental in origin. Observations of the magnetic variable beta Cor Bor revealed a more nearly sinusoidal magnetic curve with less internal scatter than the photographically determined field measures of the Lick and Mauna Kea Zeeman systems. Investigation of periodicity in the secularly varying magnetic minima of beta Cor Bor did not yield evidence of previously noted periodicities other than that expected from the time structure of the data sampling.

The Galaxy as the origin of gamma-ray bursts

The gamma-ray burst spectrum N(greater than S) versus S is reviewed and found to be inconsistent with a completely isotropic distribution. Extragalactic distributions are considered but rejected in favor of a galactic origin. Spherical halo models, particularly those with central concentration, are found to be unacceptable. Noncentrally concentrated disk models are acceptable, especially those with larger scale height (beta) distributions. Spiral structure effects prevent the total rejection of small beta distributions but impose space density requirements which exclude many extreme Population I candidates. Integrated burst luminosities range from about 10 to the 38th to 2 x 10 to the 39th ergs while burst rate densities vary between about 10 to the -6th and 10 to the -8th/cu pc yr; both are uniquely determined by the distribution scale height. It is shown that galactic burst sources must be repetitive with repetition rates between about 10 to the -5th/yr and about 10 to the 6th/yr depending on the source space density and the importance of beaming. Bursts are unimportant in the galactic energy balance and, on average, in the energy history of their sources. They may, however, dominate specific events.

Echelle efficiencies - Theory and experiment

The effect of one echelle spectrograph design factor, orientation of the incident light bundle, is examined. Comparison of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of echelle grating efficiencies are given for R2 echelles used in three possible configurations: alpha greater than beta, alpha smaller than beta, and the quasi-Littrow mode. The throughput-resolution products for these various cases are also compared.

The interaction of molten silicon with silicon aluminum oxynitrides

Silicon aluminum oxynitride solid solutions (sialons) based on beta-Si3N4 and Si2N2O behave differently in contact with molten silicon. The Si2N2O-based sialons convert to almost pure Si3N4, apparently through a two-step decomposition and solution-precipitation reaction, whereas the beta-Si3N4 sialons are preferentially attacked at the grain boundaries. The composition of the grain-boundary phase appears to control the rate of reaction.

IUE observations of long period eclipsing binaries - A study of accretion onto non-degenerate stars

IUE observations made in 1978-1979 recorded a whole class of interacting long-period binaries similar to beta Lyrae, which includes RX Cas, SX Cas, V 367 Cyg, W Cru, beta Lyr, and W Ser, called the W Serpentis stars. These mass-transferring binaries with relatively high mass transfer rate show two prominent features in the far ultraviolet: a continuum with a color temperature higher than the one observed in the optical region (about 12,000 K), and a strong emission line spectrum with the N V doublet at 1240 A, C IV doublet at 1550 A and lines of Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, Fe III, AI III, etc. These phenomena are discussed on the assumption that they are due to accretion onto non-degenerate stars.

Leading-edge deflection optimization for a highly swept arrow wing configuration

Tests were also conducted to determine the sensitivity of the lateral stability derivative C sub l sub beta to geometric anhedral. The optimized leading edge deflection was developed by aligning the leading edge with the incoming flow along the entire span. Owing to the spanwise variation of upwash, the resulting optimized leading edge was a smooth, continuously warped surface. For the particular configuration studied, levels of leading edge suction on the order of 90 percent were achieved with the smooth, continuously warped leading edge contour. The results of tests conducted to determine the sensitivity of C sub l sub beta to geometric anhedral indicate values of delta C sub l sub beta/delta T which are in reasonable agreement with estimates provided by simple vortex lattice theories.

Effect of excessive saccharose administration on metabolic processes in the liver of rabbits with restricted mobility

The administration of saccharose (3 g per 1 kg for 2 months) intensified changes encountered in hypokinesia. There was a more marked increase in the content of cholesterol, pre-beta and beta-lipoproteins, phospholipids, and glycosaminoglycans in the blood. At the same time, the administration of saccharose improved the course of metabolic processes in the liver of immobilized rabbits, restored to normal levels the reduced glycogen level, the rate of glycolysis and the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids and their discharge in the cystic bile.

Simulator investigation of arrow-wing low-speed handling qualities

Low speed handling qualities of arrow wings were investigated with a piloted simulator. Existing aerodynamic data were used from NASA SCAT 15F tunnel tests augmented with Lockheed low speed wind tunnel test data. Two arrow wing planforms were chosen for the simulation effort a Mach 2.0 design and a Mach 2.7 design. These designs are in the SCAT 15F Mach 2.7 design family, having the same beta AR and beta cot lambda. Piloted simulation results indicate that both the Mach 2.0 and Mach 2.7 planforms have satisfactory longitudinal flying qualities. However, in the control of bank angle the Mach 2.0 planform demonstrates satisfactory handling qualities while the Mach 2.7 planform is unacceptable. This situation applies for crosswind landings at FAA limits and for lineup in heavy turbulence. The low speed superiority of the Mach 2 planform with its lower sweep and higher aspect ratio is also shown by its ability to approach at least 8 m/s slower than the Mach 2.7 planform without degradation in handling qualities.

The multicategory case of the sequential Bayesian pixel selection and estimation procedure

A Bayesian technique for stratified proportion estimation and a sampling based on minimizing the mean squared error of this estimator were developed and tested on LANDSAT multispectral scanner data using the beta density function to model the prior distribution in the two-class case. An extention of this procedure to the k-class case is considered. A generalization of the beta function is shown to be a density function for the general case which allows the procedure to be extended.

Lu-Hf total-rock isochron for the eucrite meteorites

The isotope Lu-176 (2.6% of natural lutetium) decays by beta(-) to Hf-176, with a long half life. The first Lu-Hf isochron is presented. The eucrite meteorites, a suite of planetary igneous rocks of known age, 4,550 Myr, define a 10-point total-rock isochron with a slope of 0.0934 + or - 40, leading to a value of 3.53 + or - 0.14 x 10 to the 10th yr for the beta(-) decay half life of Lu-176. The isochron intercept of 0.27973 + or - 12 gives the initial Hf-176/Hf-177 for the inner solar system at the time of accretion.

Theoretical foundations for quantitative paleogenetics. III - The molecular divergence of nucleic acids and proteins for the case of genetic events of unequal probability

Theoretical equations are derived for molecular divergence with respect to gene and protein structure in the presence of genetic events with unequal probabilities: amino acid and base compositions, the frequencies of nucleotide replacements, the usage of degenerate codons, the distribution of fixed base replacements within codons and the distribution of fixed base replacements among codons. Results are presented in the form of tables relating the probabilities of given numbers of codon base changes with respect to the original codon for the alpha hemoglobin, beta hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome c and parvalbumin group gene families. Application of the calculations to the rabbit alpha and beta hemoglobin mRNAs and proteins indicates that the genes are separated by about 425 fixed based replacements distributed over 114 codon sites, which is a factor of two greater than previous estimates. The theoretical results also suggest that many more base replacements are required to effect a given gene or protein structural change than previously believed.

Dynamics of micrometeoroids

The spatial and orbital distributions of meteoroids of mass less than 10 to the -8 g are discussed. Pioneer 8 and 9, HEOS-2 and Helios 1 observations of the smallest meteoroids leaving the solar system in hyperbolic orbits due to radiation pressure (beta particles), intermediate mass particles arriving from the heliocentric spacecraft apex direction (alpha meteoroids) and the largest micrometeoroids observed with no preferred directionality (sporadic meteoroids) are reviewed, and evidence for the three groups of dynamically different micrometeoroids in lunar microcrater statistics is indicated. The collisional model of the origin of dust particles from the dispersion of sporadic meteoroids of cometary origin due to the Poynting-Robertson effect and collisions is then applied to account for the dynamics of the beta and alpha micrometeoroids.

Simultaneous measurements of magnetotail dynamics by IMP spacecraft

Pressure in the magnetotail is investigated using observations obtained by IMP spacecraft. Using combined field and plasma data, the approximate balance of pressure between the high beta plasma sheet and the low beta tail lobes is demonstrated. The changes in this pressure during substorms and the characteristics of the plasma and field that produce it are discussed. A distance of about 15 earth radii separates an inner region where the plasma sheet thins during the hour before substorm onset from an outer region where the plasma sheet thins within 5 or 10 min of the time of onset. Substorm onset and plasma sheet expansion in the inner region are simultaneous if the spacecraft is near the equatorial plane. This expansion may be delayed as much as a few tens of minutes if the spacecraft is at high latitudes.
