Far-ultraviolet studies. V - Rocket observation of the diffuse cosmic background

A far-ultraviolet spectrometer and several far-ultraviolet photometers have been carried to an altitude of 347 km to measure the spectrum of three regions at high galactic latitudes. After correction for O I airglow and for stars in the field of view, a nearly uniform residual intensity of 285 plus or minus 32 photons per (sq cm s sr A) is found over the spectral range 1230-1680 A, along with some evidence for a sharp rise in intensity longward of 1680 A. It is argued that the signal is not likely to be due to light scattering from interstellar dust. The flat spectrum could represent the integrated light of distance galaxies. The sharp rise must be due to some other phenomenon.

Correcting for Background in Flowing Plasma Measurements

Movable langmuir probe measures charge-exchange plasma density and flow in vicinity of an ion engine. Angular dependence of probe current is utilized to determine plasma flow direction at probe location. By rotating target, data are shown to be independent of target-sputtered ions.

Local redistribution of blood under the effect of fixation stress against a background of hypokinesia

Fixation stress was used as a model of emotional disturbance. The effect of previous restrictions on mobility on the local redistribution of blood resulting from fixation stress was examined. Disturbances in carbohydrate which result from prolonged hypokinesia was studied. Radioactivity was used to determine the local redistribution of blood. Modified factor analysis was used to study the results of the experiment.

NASA's Role in Aeronautics: A Workshop. Volume 7: Background papers

The nature and implications of the current state of U.S. aviation in a world setting are examined as well as their significance for NASA's role in the nation's aeronautical future. The outlook for the 1980's is examined from the point of view of legislation, economics and finance; petroleum; manpower, metallic materials, general aviation; military aviation; transport aircraft developments; and helicopters. Possible NASA assistance to DOD and the FAA is examined and the evolution of NACA and NASA in aeronautics and of NASA's aeronautics capabilities are described.

Historical background and design evolution of the transonic aircraft technology supercritical wing

Two dimensional wind tunnel test results obtained for supercritical airfoils indicated that substantial improvements in aircraft performance at high subsonic speeds could be achieved by shaping the airfoil to improve the supercritical flow above the upper surface. Significant increases in the drag divergence Mach number, the maximum lift coefficient for buffer onset, and the Mach number for buffet onset at a given lift coefficient were demonstrated for the supercritical airfoil, as compared with a NACA 6 series airfoil of comparable thickness. These trends were corroborated by results from three dimensional wind tunnel and flight tests. Because these indicated extensions of the buffet boundaries could provide significant improvements in the maneuverability of a fighter airplane, an exploratory wind tunnel investigation was initiated which demonstrated that significant aerodynamic improvements could be achieved from the direct substitution of a supercritical airfoil on a variable wing sweep multimission airplane model.

Design requirements for SRB production control system. Volume 1: Study background and overview

The solid rocket boosters assembly environment is described in terms of the contraints it places upon an automated production control system. The business system generated for the SRB assembly and the computer system which meets the business system requirements are described. The selection software process and modifications required to the recommended software are addressed as well as the hardware and configuration requirements necessary to support the system.

Radiative properties of the background stratospheric aerosols and implications for perturbed conditions

A series of Mie scattering calculations has been performed to define the wavelength-dependent, single scattering properties of aerosols present in the stratosphere during July 1979. Additional radiative transfer computations were conducted to assess the impact of aerosols on the earth's radiation budget. For these purposes, an extensive set of measurements of aerosol characteristics that were obtained in Alaska from aircraft and satellite platforms was used. At that time, the optical depth was too small for aerosols to significantly impact earth's climate. But the optical depth of the stratospheric aerosol layer has been large enough during some volcanically perturbed periods for the aerosols to have caused a noticeable warming of the stratosphere and cooling of the troposphere.

The soft X-ray diffuse background and the structure of the local interstellar medium

Data from five rocket flights of the Wisconsin soft X-ray sky survey, covering the southern galactic hemisphere with 6.5 deg spatial resolution between 0.1 and 2.0 keV, are presented as intensity maps. Analysis of the data in two energy bands below 0.3 keV is presented here. These low-energy X-rays appear to be emitted from a plasma of about one-million K, the bulk of which is closer to the sun than even the nearest 5 x 10 to the 19th/sq cm of neutral gas. No evidence is found for the presence of nearby small (radius of about 0.6 pc) clouds of cool neutral gas, as has been proposed by McKee and Ostriker (1977). The X-ray measurements are consistent with the small amounts of local neutral material inferred from Lyman-alpha absorption measurements.

Mapping the infrared background radiation from the Shuttle

The Spacelab-2 Small Helium-Cooled Infrared Telescope will be used to map extended astronomical sources of low surface brightness emission, to measure the Shuttle induced environment and to develop techniques for managing large volumes of superfluid helium in space. The instrument is an f/4 15.2-cm Herschelian telescope with ten photoconductor detectors in the focal plane. This paper describes the hardware and software aspects of the instrument with emphasis on mission operations. In particular, a description is given of the observing plan formulated to meet the scientific and engineering objectives, the scan drive system, the precautions in design and operation necessary to prevent the sun, moon, and earth from adversely affecting the observations, the implications of thruster firings, and the on-board experiment computer application software to control the scanning of the telescope and support on-board displays.

Modulation/demodulation techniques for satellite communications. Part 1: Background

Basic characteristics of digital data transmission systems described include the physical communication links, the notion of bandwidth, FCC regulations, and performance measurements such as bit rates, bit error probabilities, throughputs, and delays. The error probability performance and spectral characteristics of various modulation/demodulation techniques commonly used or proposed for use in radio and satellite communication links are summarized. Forward error correction with block or convolutional codes is also discussed along with the important coding parameter, channel cutoff rate.

Preparing for an influx of foreign students in technical writing courses: Understanding their background

The cultural and historical influences that students from foreign countries bring with them to technical and report writing classes, in particular those influences that would affect their receipt of instruction in American principles for written prose are examined. The grouping of sentences into idea units and into paragraphs, and the grouping of the paragraphs into whole structures are considered. The different cultures, different habits and norms for handling prose, and the dictates for style and structure and sufficiency and approach are also considered.

Neurochemical background and approaches in the understanding of motion sickness

The problems and nature of space motion sickness were defined. The neurochemical and neurophysiological bases of vestibular system function and of the expression of motion sickness wre reviewed. Emphasis was given to the elucidation of the neuropharmacological mechanisms underlying the effects of scopolamine and amphetamine on motion sickness. Characterization of the ascending reticular activating system and the limbic system provided clues to the etiology of the side effects of scopolamine. The interrelationship between central cholinergic pathways and the peripheral (autonomic) expression of motion sickness was described. A correlation between the stress of excessive motion and a variety of hormonal responses to that stress was also detailed. The cholinergic system is involved in the efferent modulation of the vestibular hair cells, as an afferent modulator of the vestibular nuclei, in the activation of cortical and limbic structures, in the expression of motion sickness symptoms and most likely underscores a number of the hormonal changes that occur in stressful motion environments. The role of lecithin in the regulation of the levels of neurotransmitters was characterized as a possible means by which cholinergic neurochemistry can be modulated.
