Special pliers connect hose containing liquid under pressure

For speed and safety in handling disconnect fittings on a hose carrying liquid under pressure, special pliers have been constructed. A gear and rack mechanism is combined with two or more wide-opening U-shaped jaws which are placed over the quick-disconnect fittings.

A Coaxial Flow Reactor - A Gaseous Nuclear-Rocket Concept

Aspects of a new gaseous nuclear-rocket concept are considered. The principle of this type of cavity reactor is one of maintaining the separation of two coaxial streams - fuel within propellant - rather than attaining the separation of fuel propellant gases within the cavity. An acceptably low uranium consumption rate is possible if the fuel stream can be maintained at an axial velocity which is 1/100 to 1/1000 of the propellant velocity. An elementary hydrodynamic analysis for laminar incompressible flow indicates that the average uranium core velocity may only reach 2 to 11 times the initial core velocity for a typical reactor. The results of a 1-D criticality analysis for a D2O/(235)U system show that the effect of shrinking the fuel region within the reactor cavity is not serious; the effects of moderator heating and structural materials on critical mass are also shown. Overall rocket performance calculations are made for reasonable operating conditions; these results indicate that thrusts from 25,000 to 50,000 pounds and accelerations from 10(exp -1) to 3 g are possible.

Tiros IV Radiation Data Catalog and Users' Manual

The TIROS IV Meteorological Satellite contains a medium resolution scanning radiometer. Two of the channels of this instrument are sensitive to reflected solar radiation and the remaining two respond to emitted thermal radiation from the earth and its atmosphere. The two thermal channels are calibrated in terms of equivalent blackbody temperatures, and the reflected solar radiation channels in terms of effective radiant emittances. The calibration data, along with orbital and attitude data and the radiation data from the satellite, were incorporated in a computer program for an IBM 7090 which was used to produce, in binary form, the "Final Meteorological Radiation Tape" which is the basic repository of all radiation data. After launch, the radiometer displaye d the same degradation of response characteristics as did its predecessors in TIROS II and TIROS III. The onset of degradation results in a departure of the data from the prelaunch laboratory calibration. The cause of degradation has not been determined, and the matter is still being studied at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Before work with the TIROS IV radiation data is attempted, an understanding of the radiometer, its calibration, and the problems encountered in the experiment, especially from response degradation, is essential. The instrumentation design, development work, and the calibrations herein described were performed by the Goddard Space Flight Center Staff, whereas the computer and programming efforts were carried out jointly by the staffs of the National Weather Satellite Center, U. S. Weather Bureau, and the Goddard Space Flight Center. In this Catalog-Manual, the radiometer an d its calibration, data processing, the "Final Meteorological Radiation Tape", the observed degradation patterns, and possible corrections for degradation are discussed. The Catalog-Manual also includes, in two forms, documentation of each orbit of successfully reduced radiation data acquired by TIROS IV. One method of presentation is the Index of Final Meteorological Radiation Tapes and the other is a Subpoint Track, Summary of Available Radiation Data in diagrammatic form.

Thermistor connector assembly increases accuracy of measurements

Isolation of the thermistor from spurious heat transfer for accurately measuring ambient air temperatures is accomplished by a mounting consisting of a transparent plastic film bonded to a U-shaped phenolic board with depositions of aluminum on each face and upper edge, and a variable capacitor for fine tuning.

Effects of prolonged exposure to pure oxygen on human performance

In view of the pure oxygen atmosphere selected for Project Mercury, and in anticipation of subsequent manned space missions of increasing duration, it was apparent that there was a need to obtain more extensive physiological data on the prolonged effects of pure oxygen environments on the crews. This study, conducted by Republic Aviation Corporation under Contract NASR-92, was initiated in collaboration with General Charles Roadman, USAF (MC), Director of Aerospace Medicine (formerly the Office of Life Sciences, NASA Headquarters), and his staff in an effort to provide a greater breadth of scientific data on the prolonged effects of such an environment on human performance. Although the 5 psi environment of Project Mercury was the focal point of the study, a broader appraisal of the effects of pure oxygen in the absence of nitrogen was attempted by including studies at 7.4 psi and 3.8 psi in addition to a control group at sea level atmospheric conditions. After award of the contract, the technical monitoring of the study was provided by the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, where Mr. Edward Michel served as monitor and coordinator for these and related studies subsequently established in laboratories of the U.S. Navy and U. S. Air Force.

Cryogenic seal remains leaktight during thermal displacement

Cryogenic seals protect the surfaces of a plastic member in a low-pressure system subjected to extreme temperature changes. The outer seal is an aluminum expansion ring bonded to the lens outer surface and the inner seal consists of a resin-filled aluminum U-ring bonded to the inner surface.

Renal function and water balance

Routine urinalyses, including microscopic examination, were performed periodically. Protein, sugar, and pH were determined using Hema-Combistix reagent strips manufactured by the Ames Company. When the presence of albumin was suspected from a doubtful reaction of the reagent strip, the sulfasalicylic acid turbidity test for protein was also done. Likewise, to rule out a false positive reaction for glucose, the presence or absence of the latter was also determined using Clinitest Reagent Tablets (Ames). Specific gravity was determined using an urinometer, and acetate with Acetest Tablets (Ames Company). Serum and urinary creatinine clearance were determined once every three days. Methods used in all of the above tests were taken from standard Navy laboratory manuals published by the U. S. Naval Medical School, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.

A Case History of Titanium Stress Corrosion in Nitrogen Tetroxide

An investigation of the incompatibility of titanium in certain grades of nitrogen tetroxide will be discussed as a case history. The methodology used in its resolution will point out some of the dangers associate with compatibility testing. The methodology also will present some of the difficulties associated with coordinating an investigation involving many contractors and U. S. Government agencies. The techniques employed in this investigation are described in considerable detail for the benefit of investigators with similar problems.

Theoretical studies on the relationship between the thermionic work functions of refractory-metal intermetallic compounds and their electronic and crystal structures Final summary report

The Group VIA-Re binary systems are characterized by the presence of several intermediate phases. The u phase is present in all of the systems, but the a-Mn phases occur in only the Mo-Re and W-Re systems. The occurrence of these intermediate phases appears to be governed largely by electronic factors and is predictable on the basis of electron/atom ratio. The thermionic work functions of the intermediate phase materials were experimentally determined. function and the screening of the outermost electrons in the Group VIA metals was found. A correlation between the work As might be expected for purely metallic substances, the work functions were relatively high, in the range 4. 5 to 5. 0 eV, and in each case were bracketed by the work functions of the pure constituents. A discontinuous change in the average work function with composition is proposed, based on a thermodynamical treatment of the electron vapor.
