Advanced Tritium Process Analytics and Optimization via a Digital Twin, SRNL-TR-2023-00550

Improving the process knowledge and understanding of TCAP can be achieved by incorporating advanced tools. This project addresses “Advanced analytics for modeling, forecasting, & optimization of the tritium refinement process” and is being applied to the TCAP process. The value of digitization and advanced analytics for TCAP data are tracking of gas mixtures & inventories is presently a manual effort that is rather cumbersome. Incorporating some automation into the data capture will reduce errors and storing data in an accessible database that can be used for tracking as well as process improvements. In addition, the database approach will enable longer term history to be maintained rather than the current practice of deleting data after six months. The digitized and automated data will allow for models to be developed for the process and will enable the forecasting and optimization.

Deformation behavior of CP-titanium under strain path changes: Experiment and crystal plasticity modeling

The deformation behavior of commercially pure rolled titanium subjected to strain path changes is studied using experiments and a crystal plasticity model. Four different loading combinations are performed at room temperature to study the activation of slip, twinning, de-twinning and double-twinning in hexagonal closed packed titanium. The strain paths considered are: rolling direction compression (RDC) followed by normal direction compression (NDC), RDC followed by transverse direction compression (TDC), NDC followed by RDC, and NDC followed by TDC. An EBSD-based analysis of the distribution of boundary misorientation angles before and after reload was developed to analyze the evolution of {$10\bar{1}2$} tensile and {$11\bar{2}2$} compression twins. This analysis supports the model results concerning the treatment of twin reorientation. A de-twinning and double-twinning model accounting for back stress effects, an important feature of strain path changes, is implemented within the framework of the visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) model along with a dislocation density (DD) based hardening scheme. In the model, plasticity is accommodated by prismatic $\langle$a$\rangle$, basal $\langle$a$\rangle$ and pyramidal $\langle$c+a$\rangle$ slip modes, and {$10\bar{1}2$} tensile and {$11\bar{2}2$} compression twinning modes. The VPSC model predicts the evolution of twinning, de-twinning and double-twinning processes for both tensile and compression twinning modes under strain path change. The model predicts macroscopic stress-strain response, texture evolution, and twin volume fraction that are in agreement with experimental observations. The evolution of texture is investigated in detail by separately analyzing the twinned domains, rather than the evolution of the global texture.

EBIC/TEM investigations of defects in solar silicon ribbon materials

Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate the defect structure of edge defined film growth (EFG) material, web dentritic ribbons (WEB), and ribbon to ribbon recrystallized material (RTR). The most common defects in all these materials are coherent first order twin boundaries. These coherent twins can be very thin, a few atomic layers. Bundles of the twins which contain odd numbers of twins will in optical images appear as a seemingly single first twin boundary. First-order coherent twin boundaries are not electrically active, except at locations where they contain intrinsic (grain boundary) dislocations. These dislocations take up small deviations from the ideal twin relation and play the same role in twin boundaries as conventional and play the some role in twin boundaries as conventional edge and screw dislocations in small angle tilt and twist boundaries.

The microstructure of a selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated NiTi shape memory alloy with superior tensile property and shape memory recoverability

A selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated NiTi with superior tensile property and shape memory recoverability was obtained by using a unique stripe rotation scanning strategy. Here, the alloy characteristics, formation mechanisms and evolution in terms of twins, dislocations and precipitations of the alloy were systematically studied. Compared to the conventional smelting-followed-by-machining, the SLM fabrication process involves rapid solidification and repeated heating, which confer distinctive characteristics to the microstructures of SLM-fabricated NiTi alloys. Rapid solidification promotes the formation of a supersaturation solid solution matrix containing a high concentration vacancies, which in turn aggregate to generate a high density of dislocations. During subsequent repeated heating stages, these dislocations occur thermal motion along three directions of <001 > , <111> and <110 >, leading to the formation of thermal kinks, helical dislocations and wave morphology. Simultaneously, precipitated particles Ti 3 Ni 4 repeatedly nucleate and heterogeneous grow with the movement of dislocation. Such precipitation behavior, termed repeated precipitation, has not been previously reported in the conventional NiTi alloys, suggesting that it could be a unique characteristic of such alloy. After martensitic transformation, only two twins, {1 1¯ 1} type I twin and compound twin, are detected. The twinning lamellae of these two twins, where precipitation and dislocation pile-ups exist, often have uneven thickness and chaotic arrangement. Besides, the unique self-accommodated microstructures, such as secondary {1 1¯ 1} type I twin and compound twin with “herring-bone’’ lamellae, which often appear in the deformed or nanocrystalline NiTi, can also be observed. These unique microstructures may confer the distinctive properties to the SLM-fabricated NiTi.
