Radial heat flux transformer

Unit moves heat radially from small diameter shell to larger diameter shell, or vice versa, with negligible temperature drop, making device useful wherever heating or cooling of concentrically arranged materials, substances, and structures is desired.

High resolution Fouier transform spectrometer Serial No. 091002: Instruction manual

A description of the spectrometer and procedures for its operation, maintenance, alignments, adjustments, and control functions are presented. The interferometer spectrometer is a modified Model 296 capable of 0.5/cm resolution over the spectral region of 5 to 15 microns configured for operation with the optical head at a temperature of approximately 80 K. Details are given on the optical system and the electronic circuits. The detector used with the optical head is mercury doped germanium kept at a temperature of about 4 K by means of liquid helium. Electronic schematics, and instruction manuals for handling the liquid helium dewars, tape recorder for analog outputs, and playback console are included.

Calculation of turbulent boundary layers with heat transfer and pressure gradient utilizing a compressibility transformation. Part 2: Constant property turbulent boundary layer flow with simultaneous mass transfer and pressure gradient

An analysis of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer, developing under the combined effects of mass transfer and pressure gradient, is presented in this paper. A strip-integral method is employed whereby two of the three governing equations are obtained by integrating the combined momentum and continuity equation to 50 percent and 100 percent, respectively, of the boundary-layer height. The latter equation is the usual momentum-integral equation; the former equation requires specification of shear. Accordingly, Clauser's equilibrium eddy-viscosity law is assumed valid at this point. The third and final equation is obtained by specifying that Stevenson's velocity profiles apply throughout the domain of interest, from which a skin-friction law can be derived. Comparisons of the numerical results with the experiments of McQuaid, which include combined effects of variable pressure gradient and mass transfer, show good agreement.

Earth physics and phase transformations program: A concept and proposal

A program to study the geophysical characteristics of the earth is presented as an integration of the different disciplines that constitute the earth sciences, through the foundation of a generalized geodynamic theory of earth physics. A program is considered for defining the physical constants of the earth's material which parametrize the hydrodynamic equation in the microscopic solid state behavior of the crystals of the lithosphere. In addition, in order to lay the foundation for a generalized theory in earth physics, specific research areas are considered, such as the nature of the kinetics of the phase transitions in mineral assemblages, the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of crystals which are major constituents of mineral assemblages, and the transport properties of pure crystals which are major constituents of mineral assemblages.

Empirical analytic transformations between geographic and corrected geomagnetic coordinates

Based upon a mathematical model of contours of constant corrected geomagnetic latitude in a polar projection of geographic coordinates, analytic equations are developed for converting geographic coordinates to corrected geomagnetic coordinates and vice versa. The equations were programmed for use on a small computer. This treatment is restricted to the Northern Hemisphere.

A Transformation Approach to Optimal Control Problems with Bounded State Variables

A technique is described and utilized in the study of the solutions to various general problems in optimal control theory, which are converted in to Lagrange problems in the calculus of variations. This is accomplished by mapping certain properties in Euclidean space onto closed control and state regions. Nonlinear control problems with a unit m cube as control region and unit n cube as state region are considered.

Transformation of scientists and engineers into managers

The purposes of this research were to determine the principal problems and obstacles faced by specialists during the transition period when they are becoming managers, and to discover ways by which their difficulties might be avoided or overcome. It was found that senior management officials are unaware--or tend to ignore the importance--of the transition process and its problems, that little attention has been given to developing management training to overcome transition problems, and that much of the training which is offered is largely irrelevant to these problems.

Investigation of the aluminium-aluminium oxide reversible transformation as observed by hot stage electron microscopy.

Thin foils of high purity aluminium and an Al-Al2O3 SAP type of alloy were oxidised in a specially designed hot stage specimen chamber in an electron microscope. Below 450 C, amorphous aluminium oxide formed on the foil surface and was first detectable at foil edges, holes, and pits. Islands of aluminium then nucleated in this amorphous oxide. The aluminium islands displayed either a lateral growth with eventual coalescence with other islands, or a reoxidation process which caused the islands to disappear. The aluminium island formation was determined to be related to the presence of the electron beam. A mechanism based upon electron charging due to the electron beam was proposed to explain the nucleation, growth, coalescence, disappearance, and geometry of the aluminium islands.

Phase transformations and exsolution in lunar and terrestrial calcic plagioclases.

A coarse domain structure had been discovered in plagioclase in an electron microscopic study of lunar rocks reported by Christie et al. (1971). The domain structures are described in more detail, and their significance in the light of current knowledge concerning the crystal structures of the plagioclases is discussed. An exsolution texture is also described. On the basis of the scale of exsolution it appears that the Apollo 11 and 12 basalts examined cooled more rapidly than the Apollo 14 basalt, which in turn cooled more rapidly than the Stillwater rock.

Impulse commutating circuit with transformer to limit reapplied voltage

Silicon controlled rectifier opens circuit with currents flowing up to values of 30 amperes. Switching concept halves both current and voltage in middle of commutating cycle thereby lowering size and weight requirements. Commutating circuit can be turned on or off by command and will remain on in absence of load due to continuous gate.
