Two-Dimensional Tantalum Carbo-Selenide for Hydrogen Evolution

Herein, we report the synthesis of two-dimensional Ta 2 Se 2 C (2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C) nanosheets using electrochemical lithiation in multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C followed by sonication in deionized water. Multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C was obtained via solid-state synthesis of Fe x Ta 2 Se 2 C followed by chemical etching of Fe. 2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C exhibited promising electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction from water compared to multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C and 2D-TaSe 2 . 2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C showed an overpotential at 10 mA·cm -2 (η 10 ) of 264 mV, a Tafel slope of 91 mV·dec -1 , and an electrochemically active surface area of 17.61 m ECSA 2 ·g catalyst -1 . The high performance could be attributed to the large surface area of single sheets which hence maximizes the number of exposed catalytic sites and increased density of vacancies, observed with transmission electron microscopy, during synthesis and processing.

Selenium infiltrated hierarchical hollow carbon spheres display rapid kinetics and extended cycling as lithium metal battery (LMB) cathodes

Lithium metal–selenium (Li–Se) batteries offer high volumetric energy but are limited in their cycling life and fast charge characteristics. Here a facile approach is demonstrated to synthesize hierarchically porous hollow carbon spheres that host Se (Se@HHCS) and allow for state-of-the-art electrochemical performance in a standard carbonate electrolyte (1 M LiPF 6 in 1:1 EC:DEC). The Se@HHCS electrodes display among the most favorable fast charge and cycling behavior reported. For example, they deliver specific capacities of 442 and 357 mA h g -1 after 1500 and 2000 cycles at 5C and 10C, respectively. At 2C, Se@HHCS delivers 558 mA h g -1 after 500 cycles, with cycling coulombic efficiency of 99.9%. Post-mortem microstructural analysis indicates that the structures remain intact during extended cycling. Per GITT analysis, Se@HHCS possesses significantly higher diffusion coefficients in both lithiation and delithiation processes as compared to the baseline. Furthermore, the superior performance of Se@HHCS is directly linked to its macroscopic and nanoscale pore structure: the hollow carbon sphere morphology as well as the remnant open nanoporosity accommodates the 69% volume expansion of the Li to Li 2 Se transformation, with the nanopores also providing a complementary fast ion diffusion path.

Nanoscale heterogeneity of arsenic and selenium species in coal fly ash particles: analysis using enhanced spectroscopic imaging and speciation techniques

Coal combustion byproducts are known to be enriched in arsenic (As) and selenium (Se). This enrichment is a concern during the handling, disposal, and reuse of the ash as both elements can be harmful to wildlife and humans if mobilized into water and soils. The leaching potential and bioaccessibility of As and Se in coal fly ash depends on the chemical forms of these elements and their association with the large variety of particles that comprise coal fly ash. The overall goal of this research was to determine nanoscale and microscale solid phase mineral associations and oxidation states of As and Se in fly ash. We utilized nanoscale 2D imaging (30–50 nm spot size) with the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe (HXN) in combination with microprobe X-ray capabilities (~5 μm resolution) to determine the As and Se elemental associations. Speciation of As and Se was also measured at the nano- to microscale with X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The enhanced resolution of HXN showed As and Se as either diffusely located around or comingled with Ca- and Fe-rich particles. The results also showed nanoparticles of Se attached to the surface of fly ash grains. Overall, a comparison of As and Se species across scales highlights the heterogeneity and complexity of chemical associations for these trace elements of concern in coal fly ash.

Targeted synthesis of predicted metastable compounds using modulated elemental reactants

Three metastable compounds predicted to be kinetically stable using an “island” approach were successfully synthesized from designed modulated elemental reactants. Fe0.8V0.2Se2 was synthesized by depositing ultrathin elemental layers in a V|Fe|Se sequence to control the local composition. An alloyed rock salt structured Pb3Mn2Se5 constituent layer, which does not exist as a bulk compound, was synthesized in the heterostructure (Pb3Mn2Se5)0.6VSe2 by depositing a precursor with a V|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se sequence of elemental layers that mimicked the compositional profile of the targeted heterostructure. The heterostructure (PbSe)1+δ(FeSe2)2 was prepared by depositing a precursor with a repeating layering sequence of Fe|Pb|Fe|Se, where each sequence contains the number of atoms required to form a single unit cell. In all three systems, the local compositions in the layer sequence kinetically favored the nucleation and growth of the targeted products during the deposition. The diffusion lengths to form the targeted compounds were short, and the diffusion was limited by postdeposition low temperature annealing to favor the growth of the targeted compounds and avoid the decomposition into a mixture of thermodynamically stable compounds.

Production and characterization of extracellular cellulases from a native strain of Trichoderma harzianum using wheat straw from the Mexicali valley as the carbon source. Producción y caracterización de celulasas Extracelulares a partir de cepa nativa de Trichoderma harzianum usando como fuente de Carbono paja de trigo del valle de Mexicali

The purpose of this study was to produce cellulase enzyme from a native strain Trichoderma harzianum, isolated from crop soil. Cellulase production was carried out by two different methods of fermentation, submerging and solid state fermentation. Mandels mineral medium was used as a source of nitrogen and ammonium sulfate. Dry and ground wheat straw was used in fermentation as a carbon source. Cellulase activity was determined using the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method. The results showed that wheat straw has the potential to be used as a substrate in the production of cellulases. Trichoderma harzianum showed enzymatic activity of 0.125 FPU / ml (filter paper units) and 1. 35 U / ml CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose units) by solid state fermentation (FSS) after 96 hours of fermentation. The optimum pH for the two substrates was determined by testing with citrate buffers (pH 4 to 6), phosphates (pH 6 to 7) and tris-HCL (pH 8 to 9). To determine the optimum temperature the range of 30 ° C to 80 ° C was investigated. Storage tests were performed every seven days over a period of 6 weeks. The optimum activity pH on paper and CMC was found to be 6. The optimum activity temperature is 70 ° C for PF and 80 ° C for CMC.
