Microscopic Measurement: Need for Nuclear Material Sample Specimen Characterization Capability

The Surveillance, Fabrication, and Off-Site Operations team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is beginning an update to the nuclear material machining lab in Superblock. Plutonium and other nuclear materials tend to accelerate the aging process for equipment and machines that would otherwise be maintainable for long lives. They have their lifespans shortened from deteriorated seals, embrittled polymer components, accelerated corrosion, and damage to electronics from exposure to radioactive materials. The cost of installation of equipment into a glove box (GB) tends to outstrip the cost of the equipment itself. Due to the magnification of cost, the historical approach to equipment installs has been to purchase and install the highest-quality and most robust equipment available to maximize time between failures and updates. To make room for the installation of a new lathe, the inspection GB is being moved to a different location within the machining lab. As part of the overall effort, the equipment within the inspection GB is being revisited. Current measurement capabilities are antiquated and starting to become problematic due to age. Advances in metrology are sought for more comprehensive characterization of scientific samples. This document aims to identify several options for the replacement of current measurement equipment and identify a system for purchase and eventual installation. The intention is not to select the cheapest system, but rather to identify a system that best meets the needs of both the operators and principal investigators (PI). Following the convention of the SYSM-5620 Design Thinking and System Engineering, it was determined that a laser confocal measurement system from Keyence is the most suitable option for our programmatic need. Form factor, capability, and maintainability were considered. Along with stakeholder input, to ensure the best decision for the Nuclear Material Technology Program.

Numerical study on aerosol sampling in a nuclear facility duct with a 90-degree elbow

Due to the challenging design requirements, elbows are often unavoidable in duct configuration, and these 90-degree bends introduce swirl, velocity variations, recirculation, and secondary flow. These disturbances make it difficult for nuclear facilities to meet particle sampling standards. A series of numerical analyses are conducted to track aerosols in a nuclear facility duct having a 90-degree elbow with the assistance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A turbulence model, a continuity, and a momentum, a discrete phase model, and species transport equations are solved simultaneously to track aerosols in the duct. The effect of turbulence models, turbulent dispersion models, droplet drag model, aerosol amount, aerosol spray configuration, guide vanes, and mixers are investigated. Simulation results are analyzed per relevant testing codes such as DOE-HDBK-1169, ASME AG1, ISO 14644-3, ACGIH, and ANSI/HPS N13.1.

Improved Joint FHC+RHC Sterile Analysis with Nu-on-E Sample

The NOvA experiment measures neutrino oscillations in a nearly pure muon neutrino beam. The neutral current (NC) and the muon neutrino charged current (CC) interaction disappearance are studied to search for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations. NOvA consists of two functionally identical detectors placed 14 mrad off-axis of Fermilab's NuMI beamline. The Near Detector (ND) is located 100 m underground on-site at Fermilab, while the Far Detector (FD) sits on the surface 810 km away at Ash River, Minnesota. The NuMI beam is capable of running in forward or reverse horn current modes, creating a predominantly neutrino or antineutrino beam, respectively. For this analysis, a simultaneous near and far detector joint fit approach was utilized. Systematic uncertainties constrain the ND while the statistical uncertainties constrain the FD. For the upcoming analysis, we plan on including a dedicated neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering sample. This interaction is advantageous as it is subject to minimal cross-section uncertainties, which will help reduce degeneracies between other uncertainty categories. This thesis presents the sterile neutrino oscillation sensitivity results using 27.2e+20 POT in FHC mode, 12.6e+20 in RHC mode.

Measured Reaction Rate Ratios of 235 U, 238 U, 237 Np, 239 Pu Samples in the PFUNS 235 U Prompt Fission Neutron Spectrum Criticality Experiment

The Prompt Fission Uranium Neutron Spectrum experiment, an experiment to reduce uncertainties in the high energy tail of the 235 U prompt fission spectrum, achieved success by performing two separate irradiations measuring approximately 40 different IRDFF-II reactions total using over 20 different foil materials at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center in February 2024. The criticality experiment utilized a set of highly enriched uranium hemispherical shells of increasing diameters with a large void in the center where the samples were located. The focus of this work is the first of two PFUNS irradiations focused on irradiating two of each fission foils, one bare and one cadmium covered, along with metal activation foils containing reaction products with short half-lives, such as indium, iron, and gold along with nickel fluence monitors. This work focuses on presenting the initial reaction rate ratio results of the fission foils from the aforementioned first irradiation to assist in nuclear data validation of those species in a nearly pure 235 U prompt fission neutron spectrum and compares to the Lady Godiva and Flattop-25 historic experiments at the Los Alamos Critical Experiments Facility. Future work will combine fission foil and metallic activation foil reaction rate ratio results from both the first and second higher power irradiation and reaction rates for a final spectral adjustment.

Workflow for Process Automation of Soil Gas Results from an Automated Soil Gas-Sampling System for Application in Carbon Storage Projects

Conference presentation at Geoconvention, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, May 12–14, 2025. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) developed an automated workflow for processing soil gas measurements collected from the automated soil gas-sampling systems deployed across the project site. Raw soil gas measurements are collected from each station every 4 hours and automatically uploaded to a cloud database. The workflow begins by writing code to download the data to a workstation automatically, then the data are published to an online dashboard that visualizes the measurements in time-series plots and a process-based decision-making framework. This automated workflow accelerates the time from data acquisition to decision-making. It supports carbon storage project operators by preparing and delivering a live, standardized dataset for quick analysis and source attribution to provide assurance of containment and overall permit compliance.

Application of SAMMY for Non-Destructive Characterization of Irradiated Samples Using Neutron Transmission Measurements at VENUS

This report presents the application of SAMMY (Larson 2008), an R-matrix Bayesian fitting system, for analyzing neutron transmission data to enable non-destructive isotopic identification. Transmission measurements were conducted at the VENUS (Bilheux et al. 2023) beamline of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) using samples with unknown or partially characterized compositions. Through the application of SAMMY’s R-matrix Bayesian fitting capabilities to the measured transmission spectra and comparison against evaluated nuclear data libraries, isotopic constituents can be quantitatively determined based on their characteristic neutron resonance signatures. This methodology demonstrates significant potential for applications in nuclear safeguards, forensics, and post-irradiation examination.
