Modulation of polar auxin transport identifies the molecular determinants of source–sink carbon relationships and sink strength in poplar

Abstract Source-to-sink carbon (C) allocation driven by the sink strength, i.e., the ability of a sink organ to import C, plays a central role in tissue growth and biomass productivity. However, molecular drivers of sink strength have not been thoroughly characterized in trees. Auxin, as a major plant phytohormone, regulates the mobilization of photoassimilates in source tissues and elevates the translocation of carbohydrates toward sink organs, including roots. In this study, we used an ‘auxin-stimulated carbon sink’ approach to understand the molecular processes involved in the long-distance source–sink C allocation in poplar. Poplar cuttings were foliar sprayed with polar auxin transport modulators, including auxin enhancers (AE) (i.e., IBA and IAA) and auxin inhibitor (AI) (i.e., NPA), followed by a comprehensive analysis of leaf, stem and root tissues using biomass evaluation, phenotyping, C isotope labeling, metabolomics and transcriptomics approaches. Auxin modulators altered root dry weight and branching pattern, and AE increased photosynthetically fixed C allocation from leaf to root tissues. The transcriptome analysis identified highly expressed genes in root tissue under AE condition including transcripts encoding polygalacturonase and β-amylase that could increase the sink size and activity. Metabolic analyses showed a shift in overall metabolism including an altered relative abundance levels of galactinol, and an opposite trend in citrate levels in root tissue under AE and AI conditions. In conclusion, we postulate a model suggesting that the source–sink C relationships in poplar could be fueled by mobile sugar alcohols, starch metabolism-derived sugars and TCA-cycle intermediates as key molecular drivers of sink strength.

Polarization whorls from M87* at the event horizon telescope

The event horizon telescope (EHT) is anticipated to soon produce polarimetric images of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the neighbouring galaxy M87. There are indications that this black hole is rapidly spinning. General relativity predicts that such a high-spin black hole has an emergent conformal symmetry near its event horizon. In this paper, we use this symmetry to analytically predict the polarized near-horizon emissions to be seen at the EHT and find a distinctive pattern of whorls aligned with the spin.

The local ordering of polar solvents around crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets in solution

The crystalline graphitic carbon nitride, poly-triazine imide (PTI) is highly unusual among layered materials since it is spontaneously soluble in aprotic, polar solvents including dimethylformamide (DMF). The PTI material consists of layers of carbon nitride intercalated with LiBr. When dissolved, the resulting solutions consist of dissolved, luminescent single to multilayer nanosheets of around 60–125 nm in diameter and Li+ and Br- ions originating from the intercalating salt. To understand this unique solubility, the structure of these solutions has been investigated by high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction. Although the diffraction patterns are dominated by inter-solvent correlations there are clear differences between the X-ray diffraction data of the PTI solution and the solvent in the 4–6 Å -1 range, with real space differences persisting to at least 10 Å. Structural modelling using both neutron and X-ray datasets as a constraint reveal the formation of distinct, dense solvation shells surrounding the nanoparticles with a layer of Br - close to the PTI-solvent interface. This solvent ordering provides a configuration that is energetically favourable underpinning thermodynamically driven PTI dissolution.

Two-pion contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization with staggered quarks

We present results from the first lattice QCD calculation of the two-pion contributions to the light-quark connected vector-current correlation function obtained from staggered-quark operators. We employ the MILC Collaboration’s gauge-field ensemble with 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of highly improved staggered sea quarks at a lattice spacing of a ≈ 0.15 fm with a light sea-quark mass at its physical value. The two-pion contributions allow for a refined determination of the noisy long-distance tail of the vector-current correlation function, which we use to compute the light-quark connected contribution to hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) with improved statistical precision. We compare our results with traditional noise-reduction techniques used in lattice QCD calculations of the light-quark connected HVP, namely, the so-called fit and bounding methods. We observe a factor of roughly 3 improvement in the statistical precision in the determination of the HVP contribution to the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment over these approaches. We also lay the group theoretical groundwork for extending this calculation to finer lattice spacings with increased numbers of staggered two-pion taste states.

Probing Dipolar Interactions between Rydberg Atoms and Ultracold Polar Molecules

Here, we probe resonant dipolar interactions between ultracold 40 K ⁢ 87 Rb molecules and Rydberg 87 Rb atoms in an optically trapped ensemble. Through state-selective ionization detection of the KRb molecules, we observe resonant energy transfer at 2.227 GHz from Rydberg atoms to molecules under a tunable external electric field. We measure a broadening up to 3.5 MHz, for the Rb Rydberg excitation spectrum, which matches a Monte Carlo simulation that describes a Rydberg atom and neighboring molecules evolving under a dipole-dipole interacting Hamiltonian. The demonstrated interspecies dipolar interaction is a key ingredient for hybrid Rydberg-polar molecule systems, where the advantages of each system can be leveraged and combined.

SPT-3G D1: CMB temperature and polarization power spectra and cosmology from 2019 and 2020 observations of the SPT-3G main field

Here, we present measurements of the temperature and E-mode polarization angular power spectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from observations of 4% of the sky with SPT-3G, the current camera on the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The maps used in this analysis are the deepest used in a CMB TT / TE / EE analysis to date. The maps and resulting power spectra have been validated through blind and unblind tests. The measurements of the lensed EE and TE spectra are the most precise to date at ℓ = 1800 – 4000 and ℓ = 2200 – 4000 , respectively. Combining our TT / TE / EE spectra with previously published SPT-3G CMB lensing results, we find parameters for the standard Λ cold dark matter ( Λ CDM ) model consistent with Planck and ACT DR6 with comparable constraining power. We report a Hubble constant of H 0 = 66.66 ± 0.60 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 from SPT-3G alone, 6.2 σ away from local measurements from SH0ES. For the first time, combined ground-based ( SPT + ACT ) CMB primary and lensing data have reached Planck’s constraining power on some parameters, a milestone for CMB cosmology. The combination of these three CMB experiments yields the tightest CMB constraints to date, with H 0 = 67.19 ± 0.38 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 , and the amplitude of clustering σ 8 = 0.8137 ± 0.0037 . CMB data alone show no evidence for physics beyond Λ CDM , however, we observe a 2.8 σ difference in Λ CDM between CMB and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) results from DESI-DR2, which is relaxed in extended models. The combination of CMB and BAO yields 2 − 3 σ shifts from Λ CDM in the curvature of the Universe, the amplitude of CMB lensing, or the dark energy equation of state. It also drives mild preferences for models that address the Hubble tension through modified recombination or variations in the electron mass in a nonflat Universe. This work highlights the growing power of ground-based CMB experiments and lays a foundation for further cosmological analyses with SPT-3G.

Hadronic Vacuum Polarization for the Muon 𝑔 − 2 from Lattice QCD: Long-Distance and Full Light-Quark Connected Contribution

We present results for the dominant light-quark connected contribution to the long-distance window of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon 𝑔 − 2 from lattice quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, with a new determination of the lattice scale on MILC’s physical-mass HISQ ensembles, using the Ω− baryon mass, we obtain a result of 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙,LD}_{𝜇}$⁡(conn) = 400.2⁢(2.3) stat ⁢(3.7) syst ⁢[4.3] total × 10 −10 . Summing this result with our recent determinations of the light-quark connected contributions to the short- and intermediate-distance windows, we obtain a subpercent precision determination of the light-quark-connected contribution to HVP of 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙}_{𝜇}$⁡(conn) = 655.2⁢(2.3) stat ⁢(3.9) syst ⁢[4.5]total×10 −10 . Finally, as a consistency check, we verify that an independent analysis of the full contribution is in agreement with the sum of individual windows. We discuss our future plans for improvements of our HVP calculations to meet the target precision of the Fermilab 𝑔 − 2 experiment.

Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.

Time-dependent density-functional theory of high-order harmonic generation from noble-gas atoms driven by orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields

An orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) field of frequency ratio 1 : 2 is known to generate both odd and even harmonic spectra in the mutually orthogonal directions of the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields, respectively. Recollision angles of an ionized electron driven back to its parent ion by an OTC field are inferred from the intensity ratio of odd and even harmonics, where the relative phase delays between the two-color fields can be used in time-resolved measurements on a subcycle time scale. Here, we present the ab initio, many-electron calculation of time-resolved recollision angles of noble-gas atoms driven by an OTC field, based on the time-dependent density-functional theory. Our results agree well with experimental data by Shafir et al. in Nat. Phys. 5, 412 (2009) of helium atom and New J. Phys. 12, 073032 (2010) of neon atom.

Transitions between Rydberg states in two-color corotating circularly polarized laser pulses

We present a study of higher-order Raman (Λ, V, and S) transitions between Rydberg states involving the absorption and emission of at least three photons in the interaction of two-color corotating circularly polarized laser pulses with the hydrogen atom. Our analysis is based on results of numerical solutions of the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Here, the results for the interaction with (ω,2ω) fields show that the simultaneous interaction with both fields results in an excited state distribution over a broad range of magnetic quantum numbers. Indications of the impact of the Λ, V, and S transitions are found via the analysis of final distributions resulting from the preparation of the atom in specific Rydberg states. Furthermore, we show that similar mechanisms for the redistribution of population between Rydberg states are present in two-color fields with larger differences in the central frequencies, i.e., (ω,3ω) and (ω,4ω) fields.

Furthermore, the results exhibit the opposite threshold behavior compared to the only previous calculations, but are in agreement with the most recent measurements for the Q(1), R(1), and Q(3) transitions.

Numerical simulation of RHIC polarized proton run 17 spin flipper experiments

RHIC nine-magnet spin flipper has been operated successfully during RHIC polarized proton Run 17, with 97% spin flip efficiency achieved. The results show the importance of mirror resonance removal, small spin tune spread, and proper spin flipper driving tune sweep speed. Detailed spin tracking simulations, based on a Lorentz force and Thomas-BMT differential equation numerical solver code for accuracy, have been carried out to understand the experimental results. Agreement within measurement accuracy is obtained at injection energy, 23.8 GeV. It is not as tight at 255 GeV, reasons for that are exposed. These measurements and numerical studies allow to determine the sensitivity of spin-flip efficiency to the dispersion slopes at the two Siberian snakes and to the ac dipole frequency sweep speed. They also provide guidance for future developments at BNL’s electron-ion collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Hyperentangled Time-Bin and Polarization Quantum Key Distribution

Fiber-based quantum communication networks are currently limited without quantum repeaters. Satellite-based quantum links have been proposed to extend the network domain. Here, we develop a quantum communication system, suitable for realistic satellite-to-ground communication. With this system, we execute an entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol developed by Bennett, Brassard, and Mermin (BBM92), achieving quantum bit-error rates (QBERs) below 2% in all bases. More importantly, we demonstrate low-QBER execution of a higher-dimensional hyperentanglement-based QKD protocol, using photons simultaneously entangled in polarization and time bin, leading to significantly higher secure key rates, at the cost of increased technical complexity and system size. We show that our protocol is suitable for a space-to-ground link, after incorporating Doppler-shift compensation, and verify its security using a rigorous finite-key analysis. Additionally, we discuss system-engineering considerations relevant to those and other quantum communication protocols and their dependence on what photonic degrees of freedom are utilized.

Anomalous phonon-mode dependence in polarized Raman spectroscopy of the topological Weyl semimetal TaP

Topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have attracted widespread interest due to the chiral Weyl fermions and surface Fermi arcs that enable unique optical and transport phenomena. In this work, we present angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy of TaP, a prototypical noncentrosymmetric WSM, for five excitation wavelengths ranging from 364 to 785 nm. The Raman-active modes, $A_1$, $B^1_1$, and $B^2_1$ modes, exhibit two main unique features beyond the conventional Raman theory. First, the relative intensities of Raman-active modes change as a function of the excitation wavelength. Second, angle-resolved polarized Raman spectra show systematic deviation from the Raman tensor theory. In particular, the $B^1_1$ mode is absent for 633-nm excitation, whereas the $B^2_1$ mode shows an unusual twofold symmetry instead of a fourfold symmetry for 488-, 532-, and 633-nm excitations. Finally, these unconventional phenomena are attributed to the interference effect in the Raman process owing to the existence of multiple carrier pockets with almost the same energy but different symmetries.

Possible signatures of mixed-parity superconductivity in doped polar SrTi O 3 films

Superconductors that possess both broken spatial inversion symmetry and spin-orbit interactions exhibit a mix of spin singlet and triplet pairing. In this work, we report on measurements of the superconducting properties of electron-doped, strained SrTiO 3 films. These films have an enhanced superconducting transition temperature and were previously shown to undergo a transition to a polar phase prior to becoming superconducting. We show that some films show signatures of an unusual superconducting state, such as an in-plane critical field that is higher than both the paramagnetic and orbital pair breaking limits. Furthermore, nonreciprocal transport, which reflects the ratio of odd versus even pairing interactions, is observed. Together, these characteristics indicate that these films provide a tunable platform for investigations of unconventional superconductivity.

Absolute crystal and magnetic chiralities in the langasite compound Ba 3 NbFe 3 Si 2 O 14 determined by polarized neutron and x-ray scattering

Here, we present a combined polarized neutron and x-ray scattering study on two enantiopure langasite single crystals aimed at the determination of their absolute structural and magnetic chiralities and the coupling between them. Our respective data sets unambiguously reveal two samples of opposite structural chirality, where the magnetic handedness is pinned by the structural one. Simple energy considerations of the magnetic exchange and single-ion anisotropy parameters reveal that it is not the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction but the local single-ion anisotropy on a triangular plaquette which plays a key role in stabilizing one of the two magnetic helices.

Magnetic structure of Fe 16 N 2 determined by polarized neutron diffraction on thin-film samples

Strain-free Fe 16 N 2 thin films were obtained on MgO (001) single-crystal substrates with Cr seed layers. Additionally, x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the film is textured in all three spatial directions with crystallographic orientation determined by epitaxial constraints from the substrate. Average grain size was estimated to be in the range of tens of nanometers. Ten pieces of 40-nm-thick Fe 16 N 2 thin-film samples were stacked together for half-polarized neutron diffraction study at room temperature. A total of six reflections were usable, from which the magnetic structure of Fe 16 N 2 was determined and compared to existing models. Contrary to most electronic structure calculations, the present results suggest that the magnetic moment of Fe atoms at the 8h site is large and larger than that of the 4d site. Our results support the giant magnetization of Fe 16 N 2 .

Opposite current-induced spin polarizations in bulk-metallic Bi 2 Se 3 and bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se topological insulator thin flakes

One of the most fundamental and exotic properties of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) is spin-momentum locking (SML) of their topological surface states (TSSs), promising for potential applications in future spintronics. However, other possible conduction channels, such as a trivial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and bulk-conducting states that may possess a spin Hall effect (SHE), can coexist in 3D TIs, making determining the origin of the current-induced spin polarization (CISP) difficult. Here, we directly compared the CISP between bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se (BTS221) and bulk-metallic Bi2Se3 thin flakes using spin potentiometry. In the bulk-insulating BTS221, the observed CISP has a sign consistent with the expected helicity of the SML of the TSS, but an opposite sign to its calculated bulk spin Hall conductivity. However, compared to BTS221, an opposite CISP is observed in the bulk-metallic Bi2Se3, consistent with both the expectations of its Rashba-Edelstein effect of the band-bending induced 2DEG and bulk intrinsic spin Hall Effect (SHE). If one assumes a representative occupation of the Rashba band of 3×10 13 cm –2 in Bi 2 Se 3 with a relevant relaxation time of 100 fs, the contribution to the CISP could be more dominated by the bulk intrinsic SHE. Our results provide an electrical way to distinguish the TSS from other possible conducting channels in spin transport measurements on 3D TIs, and open ways for the potential applications in charge-spin conversion devices.
