Using spin alignment of inelastically excited nuclei in fast beams to assign spins: The spectroscopy of 13 O as a test case

Excited states in O 13 were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E / A = 69.5 MeV O 13 beam off of a Be 9 target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single-proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. Furthermore, for a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave Born-approximation calculations of the spin alignment which was shown to be largely independent of the excitation mechanism. The deduced O 13 level scheme is compared to ab initio no-core shell model with continuum predictions. The lowest-energy excited states decay isotropically consistent with predictions of strong proton 1 s 1 / 2 structure. Above these states in the level scheme, we observed a number of higher-spin states not predicted within the model. Possibly these are associated with rotational bands built on deformed cluster configurations predicted by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations. The spin alignment mechanism is shown to be useful for making spin assignments and may have widespread use.

( 6 Li, d) and ( 6 Li, t) reactions on 22 Ne and implications for s-process nucleosynthesis

We studied α cluster states in 26 Mg via the 22 Ne( 6 Li,dγ) 26 Mg reaction in inverse kinematics at an energy of 7 MeV/nucleon. States between E x = 4–14 MeV in 26 Mg were populated and relative α spectroscopic factors were determined. Some of these states correspond to resonances in the Gamow window of the 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction, which is one of the main neutron sources in the astrophysical s-process. Using our new 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg and 22Ne(α,γ) 26 Mg reaction rates, we performed new s-process calculations for massive stars and asymptotic giant branch stars and compared the resulting abundances with the abundances obtained using other 22 Ne+α rates from the literature. We observe an impact on the s-process abundances up to a factor of three for intermediate-mass AGB stars and up to a factor of ten for massive stars. Additionally, states in 25 Mg at E x < 7.5 MeV are identified via the 22 Ne( 6 Li,t) 25 Mg reaction for the first time. We present the ( 6 Li, t) spectroscopic factors of these states and note similarities to the (d,p) reaction in terms of reaction selectivity.

Isospin mixing and the cubic isobaric multiplet mass equation in the lowest T=2, A=32 quintet

The isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) is known to break down in the first T=2,A=32 isospin quintet. In this work we combine high-resolution experimental data with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations to investigate isospin mixing as a possible cause for this violation. The experimental data are used to validate isospin-mixing matrix elements calculated with newly developed shell-model Hamiltonians. Our analysis shows that isospin mixing with nonanalog T=1 states contributes to the IMME breakdown, making the requirement of an anomalous cubic term inevitable for the multiplet.

Reinvestigation of the level structures of the N=49 isotones 89 Zr and 91 Mo

Here, excited states of 89 Zr and 91 Mo have been investigated using the fusion reaction 6 Li+ 89 Y at beam energy of 34 MeV. Based on new experimental data, about 16 (13) new transitions have been added to the level scheme of 89 Zr ( 91 Mo). The level structures are investigated in the framework of the spherical-basis shell model using the effective interactions JUN45 and GWBXG. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the experimental results and the calculations. The calculated results indicate the newly proposed states are characterized by proton excitations from the 1f 5/2 , 2p 3/2 , 2p 1/2 orbits to the high-j 1g 9/2 orbit. The systematic features of low lying states in the N = 49 isotones are discussed.

Evolution of the j - 1 anomalous states of the j - 3 multiplets

We report in the nuclear shell model the j -1 anomaly is associated with unusual ordering of the j and j -1 states of a j -3 split multiplet. In the mass regions placed away from the doubly magic nuclei, the j-1 levels are found to be below the respective j states. The anomalous ordering of the levels is most prominent in the silver isotopic chain, but a similar effect is observed also in other systems with pure three-hole configurations. The correlation between the Δ E = E j-1 - E j energy splitting, observed in some odd-mass nuclei, and the even-even core's 2 + level energy is well pronounced in the (28,50) neutron and proton shells and to a lesser extent in the lower and higher (20,28) and (50, 82)

Spin cutoff factor and level density for Ni 59 from an analysis of compound nuclear reactions

The spin cutoff parameter for 59 Ni has been studied from different types of experimental data, including neutron angular distributions from the 56 Fe(α,n) 59 Ni reaction, spin of discrete levels, the level density from the proton evaporation spectrum of the 54 Fe( 6 Li,p) 59 Ni reaction and neutron resonance spacing. Experimental data points were compared with calculations using models widely used in literature. It was found that the available empirical models overestimate data points in the energy region below the neutron separation energy, while microscopic calculations which take into account pairing correlations within Hartree-Fock +Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer approach are consistent with data. As a result, it confirmed earlier findings that pairing correlations play an important role and need to be taken into account when the spin cutoff parameter is calculated below the neutron separation energy.

α decay of the neutron-deficient isotope At 190

The alpha decay of the neutron-deficient 190 At isotope was observed following the 103 Rh( 90 Zr, 3n) 190 At reaction at Argonne National Laboratory. The reaction products were separated from the beam using the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer and implanted into a double-sided Si strip detector. The spatial and temporal correlations between implanted nuclei and subsequent α decays towards the known daughter isotope 186 Bi were used to identify and characterize 190 At nuclei. In this paper, two possible decay scenarios are proposed for the 190 At → 186 Bi decay.

Invariant-mass spectroscopy in projectile fragmentation reactions

The fragmentation of a projectile into a number of pieces can lead to the creation of many resonances in different nuclei. We discuss application of the invariant-mass method to the products from such reactions to find some of the most exotic resonances located furthest beyond the proton drip line. We show examples from fragmentation of a fast 13 O beam including the production of the newly identified 9 N resonance. In extracting resonance parameters from invariant-mass spectra, accurate estimates of the background from nonresonant prompt protons are needed. These prompt protons are correlated with the resonances due to long-range Coulomb interactions and will suppress events when resonance decay products and the prompt protons have small invariant masses. The shape of this background is especially important in determining the widths of wide resonances typically found at the edge of the chart of nuclides. An event-mixing recipe is proposed to describe this background, where the mixed events have reduced weighting for the smaller invariant masses to account for the effect of the Coulomb final-state interactions. The weighting is based on the measured correlations of heavier hydrogen isotopes with the resonances or the projectile residues. We also show that the relative magnitude of the background can be reduced in some cases by selecting events where the resonance decay products are accompanied by a deuteron or triton cluster. Here, the deuteron and triton clusters are largely not products of resonant decay and thus events with an accompanying cluster are associated with fewer background protons than events without them. The width of the 5/2¯ state in 9 C with the new background prescription was found to be consistent with the value obtained using proton elastic scattering on 8 B. Improved values for the widths of 10 C, 10,11 N, and 12 O resonances were also obtained using the new background prescription.

Binding energies, charge radii, spins, and moments: Odd-odd Ag isotopes and discovery of a new isomer

We report on the masses and hyperfine structure of ground and isomeric states in 114,116,118,120 Ag isotopes, measured with the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique (PI-ICR) with the JYFLTRAP mass spectrometer and the collinear laser spectroscopy beamline at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility, Jyväskylä, Finland. We measured the masses and excitation energies, electromagnetic moments, and charge radii, and firmly established the nuclear spins of the long-lived states. A new isomer was discovered in 118 Ag and the half-lives of 118 Ag long-lived states were reevaluated. We unambiguously pinned down the level ordering of all long-lived states, placing the inversion of the 𝐼 = 0 − and 𝐼 = 4 + states at 𝐴 = 118 (𝑁 = 71). As a result, we compared the electromagnetic moments of each state to empirical single-particle moments to identify the dominant configuration where possible.

Shape Changes in the N = 28 Island of Inversion: Collective Structures Built on Configuration-Coexisting States in 43 S

The neutron-rich nuclei in the N = 28 island of inversion have attracted considerable experimental and theoretical attention, providing great insight into the evolution of shell structure and nuclear shape in exotic nuclei. In this study, for the first time, quadrupole collectivity is assessed simultaneously on top of the 3/2 - ground state and the 7/2 - shape-coexisting isomer of 43 S, putting the unique interpretation of shape and configuration coexistence at N = 27 and 28 in the sulfur isotopic chain to the test. From an analysis of the electromagnetic transition strengths and quadrupole moments predicted within the shell model, it is shown that the onset of shape coexistence and the emergence of a simple collective structure appear suddenly in 43 S with no indication of such patterns in the N = 27 isotone 45 Ar.
