The TechEdSat-N Series: A Collaborative Technology Development Platform in the Nano-Satellite Form Factor

The TechEdSat-1 (TES-1) was the first U.S. CubeSat to be deployed from the ISS (International Space Station). This permitted the initiation of a flight series that has recently de-orbited the 6th nano-satellite with subsequent numbers 7-10 under development. The nano-satellites range from 1U (1 unit) to 6U (TechEdSat-8) but have the critical ISS Safety design features standardized in order to focus on the particular experiment objectives. Incremental experimental development has included unique communication subsystems such as command/control of the nanosatellite through email commands -as well as a recent record for Wifi transmission. Also, the thermophysics of controlled drag devices (Exo-Brake) has been developed which will prelude sample return and planetary exploration applications. The successful "rapid incremental experiment" approach has also been incorporated into collaborations with academia, permitting professors/student interns to be exposed to the rigors of space mission hardware design and execution. The TechEdSat-8, a linear 6U configuration, allows for 5 different groups to contribute an "experiment, sensor, or sub-system" through a well-defined common interface. Lastly, the flying laboratory concept is helpful in developing future interplanetary nano-satellite subsystems which will advance exploration goals by allowing rapid demonstration/validation first in LEO (Low Earth Orbit).

The CANDELS/SHARDS Multi-Wavelength Catalog in GOODS-N: Photometry, Photometric Redshifts, Stellar Masses, Emission Line Fluxes and Star Formation Rates

We present a WFC3 F160W (H-band) selected catalog in the CANDELS/GOODS-N field containing photometry from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (IR), photometric redshifts and stellar pa-rameters derived from the analysis of the multi-wavelength data. The catalog contains 35,445 sourcesover the 171 arcmin2of the CANDELS F160W mosaic. The 5σdetection limits (within an aperture ofradius 0.′′17) of the mosaic range betweenH= 27.8, 28.2 and 28.7 in the wide, intermediate and deepregions, that span approximately 50%, 15% and 35% of the total area. The multi-wavelength photom-etry includes broad-band data from UV (U band from KPNO and LBC), optical (HST/ACS F435W,F606W, F775W, F814W, and F850LP), near-to-mid IR (HST/WFC3 F105W, F125W, F140W andF160W, Subaru/MOIRCS Ks, CFHT/Megacam K, andSpitzer/IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0μm) and far IR(Spitzer/MIPS 24μm, HERSCHEL/PACS 100 and 160μm, SPIRE 250, 350 and 500μm) observations. In addition, the catalog also includes, optical medium-band data (R∼50) in 25 consecutive bands,λ= 500 to 950 nm, from the SHARDS survey and WFC3 IR spectroscopic observations with theG102 and G141 grisms (R∼210 and 130). The use of higher spectral resolution data to estimate pho-tometric redshifts provides very high, and nearly uniform, precision fromz= 0−2.5. The comparisonto 1,485 good quality spectroscopic redshifts up toz∼3 yields ∆z/(1+zspec)=0.0032 and an outlierfraction ofη=4.3%. In addition to the multi-band photometry, we release added-value catalogs withemission line fluxes, stellar masses, dust attenuations, UV- and IR-based star formation rates andrest-frame colors.

Simplified Structure Models for Premixed n-Alkane Cool Flames

The chemical kinetics of cool flames in mixtures of normal alkanes, oxygen, and nitrogen recently have been reduced to obtain simplified asymptotic flame-structure models that can be used to compare theoretical predictions with experimental measurements. A key step that affects flame structures strongly, namely the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the alkyl radical by an oxygen molecule, had not been taken into account in those models. This deficiency has now been remedied for diffusion flames. The present contribution reports the corresponding remedy for premixed-flame analyses. In the new model, non-zero chemical reaction rates are restricted to narrow regions in the vicinity of the maximum temperature, whereas previously they extended throughout the preheat zone. Comparisons of the new predictions with experimental burning-velocity measurements seem favorable.

Presolar Grains in Bennu: Constraints From C and N Isotopic Compositions

Primitive chondrites, including CI and CM types, are known to contain a rich variety of presolar grains that were seeded into the protoplanetary disk from neighboring stars and stellar objects prior to aggregation into asteroidal parent bodies. Stepped combustion using the FINESSE instrument at the Open University (OU) was employed to determine whether material from Bennu contains populations of presolar grains similar to those of CI and CM chondrites as well as recently returned samples from Ryugu.
