Radiation Hardening – Test Capabilities (LANSCE) [Slides]

The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) has exceptional facilities for research and testing of radiation effects in electronics. We have the best terrestrial neutron source for sea-level and airplane-altitude environments. We have a thermal neutron test capability at the Lujan Center and a proton beam test capability at the “Blue Room”. LANL has the programmatic mission to develop this radiation-effects program, namely space and satellite environments, high-performance computing (silent data corruption), and weapons delivery systems. We have a strong connection to industry which continues to grow.

Betty Perkins: A giant in nuclear weapons research Reports amassed after testing ban are vital to today’s work

Today’s nuclear weapons research builds upon the work of the past, often on the shoulders of the giants of nuclear document preservation in the absence of testing. One of these giants is weapons historian Betty Perkins. Before her retirement in 2016, Perkins held numerous roles at LANL, but she is best known for her pioneering work in the Weapons Program where she generated classified reports on nuclear weapons design and development. Over many years, she meticulously researched and recorded the histories of a number of critical efforts in Los Alamos’s nuclear weapons program, culminating in 13 reports comprising more than 7,200 pages.

EPC-ES WIPP WAC Appendix A Equivalence Support Measurements 2019-2020

Characterization of low-level waste (LLW) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily performed by the Environmental Protection and Compliance - Environmental Stewardship (EPC-ES) Characterization Services team and/or the Nuclear Process Infrastructure (NPI--9) Nuclear Material Support Services team (hereafter referred to as the gamma spectroscopy teams). The gamma spectroscopy teams use portable high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector systems for the nondestructive assay (NDA) characterization of LLW. Controlled-approved procedures and processes for the use of such systems to assay LLW items are currently in place. Additionally, a number of performance studies have been conducted by the gamma spectroscopy teams to support the efficacy and quality of assay results generated by the established NDA process.

Integrated Project Review (IPR) Program

Environmental Protection and Compliance Division (EPC-DO) owns institutional responsibility for compliance with Federal, State, and local environmental requirements. EPC SMEs want to know about all activities and projects being conducted at the Lab. Our regulatory framework requires LANL customers to use the Integrated Review Tool which includes PRID, EXID, and Siting. SD400 Environmental Management System, Rev 5 states all new/modified work, activities, operations and projects at the Lab must be reviewed for applicable environmental requirements through the IRT.

Serendipitous discovery connects grandfather and granddaughter at the Lab 60 years apart A third-generation employee learns about Los Alamos family history

The Lab’s enduring mission work means staff like Cameron Townsend are one of many family members who have careers at LANL. Cameron is her family’s third generation to work at the Lab, starting with her great grandparents, followed by her grandparents (skipping her parents), and now including her and her husband. She didn’t know about her family history at the Lab until she started working here three years ago when a typical day on the job became a serendipitous window into her family’s long history with the Lab. Cameron, who is an architect in EPC-ES: Environmental Stewardship and helps manage the Lab’s historic buildings program, was given a drawing from 1960 to aid in an assessment. The drafter’s name on the sketch: Ron Turner, her grandfather.

Corrosion Research Survey: Corrosion-Surface Roughness Correlation on Carbon and Stainless Steels

Concerning the SAVY 4000 container LANL inspection acceptance of Ra (surface roughness) and its correlation to subsequent surface corrosion, a problem statement has been identified. The problem statement is as follows: When the 316L container has been subjected to accommodating materials producing high wattage, along with materials that eventually produce HCL (hydrochloric acid) will a higher or lower Ra on the inner surface of the SAVY 4000 container influence the rate or the amount of corrosion? In an effort to address this concern, a literature review covering more fundamental studies that examine the influence of roughness on corrosion in metals are surveyed. The scope is kept relevant to the less dynamic storage conditions that a SAVY container may be exposed to.

Los Alamos National Laboratory SAVY-4000 Field Surveillance Plan (Update for 2021)

The Packaging Surveillance Program section of the Department of Energy (DOE) Manual 441.1- 1, Nuclear Material Packaging Manual (DOE 2008), requires DOE contractors to “ensure that a surveillance program is established and implemented to ensure the nuclear material storage package continues to meet its design criteria.” The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) SAVY-4000 Field Surveillance Plan was first issued in fiscal year (FY) 2013. The surveillance plan is reviewed annually and updated as necessary based on SAVY-4000 surveillance findings, as well as results of the lifetime extension studies. Six surveillance plan updates have been issued, one in 2014, one in 2016, one in 2017, one in 2018 one in 2019 and one in 2020. This 2021 update documents what was actually done in 2020 and what is planned for 2021. Deviations from the 2020 surveillance plan were necessary because some of the planned surveillance containers were not available for examination.

Lights, camera, commitment: Mick Greenbank’s 25 years as a Lab photographer

Mick Greenbank flips through a 3-ring binder as he sits in a TA-55 conference room, reminiscing about the nearly 25 years he’s spent working as a LANL photographer. Paging through certificates, noteworthy letters and emails, and old lists of goals and tasks, he explains that he’s stayed a TA-55 photographer for a quarter of a century because he “just wants to shoot.” Over that time, he became known as a trustworthy and committed team player who’s always ready to lend a camera-filled hand.

Multigroup Scattering in Monte Carlo Radiation Transport Codes [Slides]

Legendre truncations to multigroup scattering distributions are not amenable to Monte Carlo sampling due to negative values. We have implemented two moment-preserving methods in MGMC that capture the shape of the truncation, are non-negative over [-1, 1], and can be efficiently sampled on CPUs and GPUs. MGMC can now simulate neutrons with anisotropic scattering mechanics and MGMC shows good agreement with LANL production codes PARTISN.

Reconfiguring the metabolism of photosynthetic microbes for their development as biotechnological platforms [Slides]

LANL is at the forefront of genetic engineering of microalgae. We have developed genetic engineering toolboxes for many strains, including Picochlorum soloecismus, Nannochloropsis salina, and Chlorella sorokiniana. We have implemented such toolboxes for generating mutants with favorable phenotypes. We have the opportunity to integrate metabolic features from different species (cyanobacteria>microalgae>plants) into a synthetic biology discovery and developmental platform. We can leverage the cyanobacterial metabolic “simplicity” to engineer complex organisms, i.e. for the production of renewable polymers and unrivaled ‘omics and machine learning scientific collaboration.

Bolt: A Fast Solver for Kinetic Theories Using a High-Resolution Constrained Transport Scheme [Slides]

Our understanding of collisionless and semi-collisional plasmas in the nonlinear regime is limited by the expense of computing solutions numerically. Bolt is a fast, GPU-accelerated code for rapidly computing such solutions with accurate transport and an approximate collision operator. Such calculations are relevant to both problems in astrophysics, such as heat conduction and magnetic reconnection in accretion disks around black holes, and also to programmatic interests at LANL. The bolt code paper, demonstrating accuracy via a suite of test problems calculated on kodiak, is currently in preparation.
