Broadband and filter radiometers at Ross Island, Antarctica: detection of cloud ice phase versus liquid water influences on shortwave and longwave radiation

Abstract. Surface radiometer data from Ross Island, Antarctica, collected during the austral summer 2015–2016 by the US Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program West Antarctic Radiation Experiment (AWARE), are used to evaluate how shortwave and longwave irradiance respond to changing cloud properties as governed by contrasting meteorological regimes. Shortwave atmospheric transmittance is derived from pyranometer measurements, and cloud conservative-scattering optical depth is derived from filter radiometer measurements at 870 nm. With onshore flow associated with marine air masses, clouds contain mostly liquid water. With southerly flow over the Transantarctic Mountains, orographic forcing induces substantial cloud ice water content. These ice and mixed-phase clouds attenuate more surface shortwave irradiance than the maritime-influenced clouds and also emit less longwave irradiance due to colder cloud base temperature. These detected irradiance changes are in a range that can mean onset or inhibition of surface melt over ice shelves. This study demonstrates how basic and relatively low-cost broadband and filter radiometers can be used to detect subtle climatological influences of contrasting cloud microphysical properties at very remote locations.

Application of Statistical Filter Theory to the Optimal Estimation of Position and Velocity on Board a Circumlunar Vehicle

Concepts from statistical filter theory are applied to the problem of in-flight determination of the position and velocity of a space vehicle for the purposes of midcourse guidance. The source of information is assumed to be an arbitrary sequence of measurements of any desired set of "observables" (e.g., space angles), the measurements being corrupted by additive errors so that the position and velocity are never known perfectly. A state transition approach is employed which leads naturally to a computational scheme that is readily implemented by a digital computer. The scheme can be regarded as a dynamical time-varying filter which weights the incoming observations in an optimal sense for use in producing an up-to-date optimal estimate of position and velocity. The advantages of the scheme are (1) it provides the best possible estimate (minimum error) based upon ensemble statistics of injection conditions and measurement errors; (2) it is extremely versatile, not requiring adherence to a predetermined observation schedule or reference trajectory; and (3) the computations are sufficiently simple to be practical in an on-board computer. A digital computer simulation of the proposed system is employed to demonstrate the feasibility of an all on-board system and to illustrate the performance attainable in a hypothetical physical situation.

Filter for high-pressure gases has easy take- down, assembly

A small metal filter body, for use in tubing supplying sterilization gases, has an inlet end that can be unscrewed. Inside, the high pressure filter is supported on both sides and sealed by an O ring. Design facilitates assembly and disassembly of parts.

High-pass RF coaxial filter rejects dc and low frequency signals

A low-loss RF filter element for coaxial transmission provides dc isolation and eliminates low frequency signals. The characteristic impedance of the transmission line is not affected, as the design permits direct connection of the filter to the line.

PTFE-ALUMINUM films serve as neutral density filters

Polytetrafluoroethylene /PTFE/ films coated with aluminum films act as neutral density filters in the wavelength range 0.3 to 2.1 microns. These filters are effective in the calibration of photometric systems.

Thin carbon film serves as UV bandpass filter

Thin carbon film deposited on a 70 percent transparent screen provides a filter for narrow-band detectors in the extreme ultraviolet. The filter also suppresses scattered light and light of unwanted orders in vacuum spectrographs.

High-performance RC bandpass filter is adapted to miniaturized construction

Miniaturized bandpass filter with RC networks is suitable for use in integrated circuits. The circuit consists of three stages of amplification with additional resistive and capacitive components to obtain the desired characteristics. The advantages of the active RC filter network are the reduction in size and weight and elimination of magnetic materials.

Two techniques enable sampling of filtered and unfiltered molten metals

Filtered samples of molten metals are obtained by filtering through a plug of porous material fitted in the end of a sample tube, and unfiltered samples are obtained by using a capillary-tube extension rod with a perforated bucket. With these methods there are no sampling errors or loss of liquid.

Digital filter synthesis computer program

Digital filter synthesis computer program expresses any continuous function of a complex variable in approximate form as a computational algorithm or difference equation. Once the difference equation has been developed, digital filtering can be performed by the program on any input data list.

Design of dissipative linear phase filters

Set of design curves eliminates work involved in designing linear phase filters by being normalized in such a way as to apply to low, band, and high-pass filters of any bandwidth. Similar curves for any number of poles are plotted by solving a system of simultaneous equations.
