Development of a Comparison Framework for Evaluating Environmental Contours of Extreme Sea States

Environmental contours of extreme sea states are often utilized for the purposes of reliability-based offshore design. Many methods have been proposed to estimate environmental contours of extreme sea states, including, but not limited to, the traditional inverse first-order reliability method (I-FORM) and subsequent modifications, copula methods, and Monte Carlo methods. These methods differ in terms of both the methodology selected for defining the joint distribution of sea state parameters and in the method used to construct the environmental contour from the joint distribution. It is often difficult to compare the results of proposed methods to determine which method should be used for a particular application or geographical region. The comparison of the predictions from various contour methods at a single site and across many sites is important to making environmental contours of extreme sea states useful in practice. The goal of this paper is to develop a comparison framework for evaluating methods for developing environmental contours of extreme sea states. This paper develops generalized metrics for comparing the performance of contour methods to one another across a collection of study sites, and applies these metrics and methods to develop conclusions about trends in the wave resource across geographic locations, as demonstrated for a pilot dataset. These proposed metrics and methods are intended to judge the environmental contours themselves relative to other contour methods, and are thus agnostic to a specific device, structure, or field of application. The metrics developed and applied in this paper include measures of predictive accuracy, physical validity, and aggregated temporal performance that can be used to both assess contour methods and provide recommendations for the use of certain methods in various geographical regions. The application and aggregation of the metrics proposed in this paper outline a comparison framework for environmental contour methods that can be applied to support design analysis workflows for offshore structures. This comparison framework could be extended in future work to include additional metrics of interest, potentially including those to address issues pertinent to a specific application area or analysis discipline, such as metrics related to structural response across contour methods or additional physics-based metrics based on wave dynamics.

Advances in Genes-Encoding Transporters for Cadmium Uptake, Translocation, and Accumulation in Plants

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that is highly toxic for plants, animals, and human beings. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in Cd accumulation in plants is beneficial for developing strategies for either the remediation of Cd-polluted soils using hyperaccumulator plants or preventing excess Cd accumulation in the edible parts of crops and vegetables. As a ubiquitous heavy metal, the transport of Cd in plant cells is suggested to be mediated by transporters for essential elements such as Ca, Zn, K, and Mn. Identification of the genes encoding Cd transporters is important for understanding the mechanisms underlying Cd uptake, translocation, and accumulation in either crop or hyperaccumulator plants. Recent studies have shown that the transporters that mediate the uptake, transport, and accumulation of Cd in plants mainly include members of the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (Nramp), heavy metal-transporting ATPase (HMA), zinc and iron regulated transporter protein (ZIP), ATP-binding cassette (ABC), and yellow stripe-like (YSL) families. Here, we review the latest advances in the research of these Cd transporters and lay the foundation for a systematic understanding underlying the molecular mechanisms of Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation in plants.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: A Preliminary Evaluation of Groundwater Contamination in the Western States

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a manufactured group of chemicals that have been used since the 1940s. PFAS break down very slowly and studies show that exposure to these chemicals may cause negative reproductive effects, developmental delays in children, increased risk of some cancers, and interference with the body’s natural hormones. On June 15, 2022, EPA issued interim updated drinking water health advisories for the two most widely studied PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). The concentrations for the health advisory limits are 0.004 parts per trillion (ppt) and 0.02 ppt respectively. Because data is often reported in combined PFOA and PFOS concentrations, and for ease of data visualization, concentrations of the two chemicals will be discussed as a single, summed value and will be compared to the combined health advisory limits of 0.024 ppt. Due to the recently published near-zero health advisory limits and the known negative health effects, a map of estimated PFAS groundwater contamination was created using ArcGIS Pro and geostatistical tools to inform the public and determine which regions are most at-risk.

The Scaling of MCS, Non‐MCS, and Total Extreme Precipitation With Temperature Over the Central United States

Abstract While extreme precipitation is expected to increase in a warming climate, its scaling with temperature at weather timescales often produces puzzling results. Here, we focus on the summer months over the central U.S. to investigate the scaling of extreme precipitation intensity (EPI) with local temperature and determine the contribution of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) to the EPI scaling. Using an observational data set that differentiates precipitation associated with MCS and non‐MCS storms, we find that MCS storms contribute to 70% of EPI samples at temperatures lower than 298 K where EPI increases with temperature. However, at temperatures of 298–305 K, MCSs' contribution to EPI decreases as the predominant storm type shifts from MCS to non‐MCS storms, causing EPI to decrease with temperature due to the weaker rainfall intensity associated with non‐MCS storms compared with MCS storms. Our findings underscore the important role of different storm types in affecting the EPI scaling relationships.

Using probability distribution function as a scaling approach to incorporate soil heterogeneity into biogeochemical models for greenhouse gas predictions (Final Technical Report)

The project investigated biogeochemical processes at terrestrial-aquatic interfaces (TAIs), focusing on soil microsite heterogeneity and its impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. Using laboratory experiments, modeling, and data integration, researchers explored redox-driven microbial processes under fluctuating hydrological conditions. Key advancements included modifying the DAMM-GHG model to incorporateelectron acceptor availability and enhancing the AquaMEND model for improved microbial metabolism representation. Results highlighted microsite redox variability as a key driver of GHG fluxes, informing Earth system models. The project fostered interdisciplinary collaborations, student training, and the development of novel modeling frameworks to improve Earth'senergy budget.
