The PHASE Project: New Research and Tools to Inform Pollinator Habitat on Utility-Scale Solar

The solar industry is responding to demand for building a clean energy future. At the same time, pollinator declines and habitat losses are resulting in listing consideration for once-common species like monarch butterflies, plus petitions to list bees and other species. How can projects responsibly co-locate pollinator plantings at solar facilities? What ecological and performance benefits can be realized from pollinator plantings? How do developers and owners weigh the costs and challenges of maintaining pollinator plantings and determine the effects it has on power generation, community acceptance, and operations? The Pollinator Habitat Aligned with Solar Energy (PHASE) project is a four-year research project that aims to answer these questions and better support the solar industry in successfully implementing pollinator plantings. This project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Office. In collaboration with an advisory group composed of industry and technical professionals, the PHASE team developed methodologies to evaluate the impacts of plantings on both biodiversity and the facility operations, including the diversity of plant and insect communities, pollinator services being provided by the site, and the effects of pollinator vegetation on panel temperature and efficiency. The PHASE team also used data to develop tools designed to better support solar industry decision-making on pollinator vegetation including a Pollinator Planting Implementation Manual, a Cost Comparison Tool, a Seed Selection Tool, and Habitat Assessment Module Guidance. Final versions of the four tools will be released this year.

South Asia Group for Energy - Bhutan

Bhutan's electricity system is already low-carbon through the use of hydropower. However, generation from hydroelectric plants is reduced during the dry winter months and will be impacted by climate change and other extreme weather events. Bhutan is mitigating these risks by diversifying their energy mix with clean energy resources. Bhutan is exploring photovoltaic (PV) solar energy development to enhance its energy system's overall resilience. To ensure efficient grid planning and solar integration, Bhutan's power generator, Druk Green Power Corporation, and the transmission and distribution utility, Bhutan Power Corporation, are partnering with the South Asia Group for Energy (SAGE) to develop their solar capabilities, integrate solar energy into the grid, and strengthen Bhutan's energy infrastructure and efficiency.

Locating Equitable Solar Opportunities by Census Tract: A Guide to the Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and Deployment of Solar (STEADy Solar)

The Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and DeploYment of Solar (STEADy Solar) is a database and mapping tool that indicates locations that may be eligible for the Investment Tax Credit bonus adders defined in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The tool combines publicly available information on demographics, solar technical potential, solar economics (modeled net present value), building counts by use-type, and eligibility for tax credit adders. It can be used by states, municipalities, community-based organizations, developers, and researchers to identify sites where solar projects may be economical and where federal incentives may be available to support equitable adoption of solar. This report describes the STEADy dataset and presents high level insights from the data.

Optimal operations of a nuclear-based integrated energy system: A mixed integer program approach

A nuclear-based integrated energy system (IES), consisting of multiple carbon-free energy generation and conversion technologies to meet heterogeneous end-use demands, offers a promising approach to decarbonizing the U.S. economy. Operating such an IES is challenging due to its complexity and the diverse end-use demands, such as heating and electricity. This paper aims to address the optimal operation of an IES composed of a small modular reactor (SMR), a steam manifold, a balance of plant (BOP), a high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system, a district heating (DH) network, and electrical grids. We formulate the system’s operation as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem to maximize net revenues from sales of electricity and hydrogen. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, we conduct a 24-hour simulation considering day-ahead (DA) electricity prices from CAISO and a varying DH demand profile with hourly resolution. The simulation results show that our model effectively optimizes the operation by selling electricity during on-peak periods and purchasing electricity for hydrogen production during off-peak periods, while satisfying operating constraints within the IES.

FY 2023 Idaho National Laboratory Site Sustainability Plan

The mission of the Department of Energy (DOE) is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions. This FY 2022 Idaho National Laboratory Site Sustainability Plan (SSP) was developed to enable and sustain Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) mission to discover, demonstrate, and secure innovative nuclear solutions, clean energy options, and critical infrastructure. DOE Order 436.1, “Departmental Sustainability,” provides requirements and assigns responsibilities for managing sustainability within DOE to ensure that DOE missions are carried out in a sustainable manner, to institute wholesale cultural change to factor sustainability into all DOE decisions, and to ensure DOE achieves sustainability goals. DOE Order 436.1 also requires DOE sites to commit appropriate personnel resources, establish a financing plan that prioritizes the use of life-cycle cost effective private-sector financing, optimize the application of appropriations and budgeted funds, and establish specific performance measures and deliverables designed to achieve the listed requirements. The SSP was developed according to the narrative requirements from the “FY 2022 DOE Site Sustainability Plan Guidance” document issued in September 2021. The SSP contains strategies and activities that will lead to continual energy, water, and waste reductions that move the INL site toward meeting DOE sustainability goals and requirements. The SSP summarizes energy and available fuel use reporting requirements and references criteria for instituting sustainable design. SSP requirements are integrated into each INL site contractor’s Integrated Safety Management System and Environmental Management System (EMS). Finally, the Sustainability Program directives, based on this SSP, are integrated into INL/LTD-21-62463, Annual Laboratory Plan 2021, and operations and acquisition systems.

Avancando na Transicao Energetica: Desafios e Estrategias para a Implantacao Sustentavel de FV

As the world embarks on an ambitious journey towards global decarbonization, the spotlight turns to photovoltaic (PV) technology as a cornerstone for sustainable energy solutions. This talk delves into the current status and projections of PV for the World, US and Brasil, and the necessary considerations to do this increase in manufacturing and deployment sustainably. With the projected scale of deployment, the industry faces significant challenges related to material demand and the management of PV modules at their end of life. The principles of the Circular Economy (CE) and its associated R-Actions - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, among others - present a promising framework to address these challenges by mitigating end-of-life management and material sourcing concerns. However, traditional CE metrics, often focused solely on mass, fall short by excluding vital energy flow considerations. In this talk, we will highlight how various metrics are needed to understand sustainable PV solutions, how continuing the search for increased efficiency can significantly reduce material demands and enhance energy metrics, while strategies around material circularity and module lifetime and reliability improvements will offer substantial reductions in both material and energy demands.

Aspiring is Not Enough

this article is an invitation to imagine that a different Puerto Rico is possible. However, I don’t believe that we have to wait until 2052 to discuss Puerto Rico’s future. We Puerto Ricans can start talking, planning, and building it now! My experience, being raised in the mountains of the big island of Puerto Rico, is that many versions of Puerto Rico exist at the same time—that there are many hearts, many visions, many struggles, and many longings. So, what should the Puerto Rico that we want to live in look like? What do we want to share with future generations?
