Route to high-$T_c$ superconductivity via CH 4 -intercalated H 3 S hydride perovskites

While exploring potential superconductors in the C-S-H ternary system using first-principles crystal structure prediction methods, we uncovered a class of hydride perovskites based on the intercalation of methane into an H 3 S framework. These intriguing H 3 S–CH 4 structures emerge as metastable at ~100 GPa. Further, electron-phonon coupling calculations indicate that phases with CSH 7 stoichiometry are potential superconductors with $T_c$ values ranging from 100 K to 190 K at megabar pressures. The results are expected to guide the experimental search for new high-$T_c$ superconductors, including those stable at lower pressures than previously documented superconducting hydrides such as H 3 S and LaH 10 .

Electronic structure of the Si-containing topological Dirac semimetal CaAl 2 Si 2

There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, very few of them contain silicon, the most widely used element in the electronics industry. Recently, ternary compound CaA l 2 S i 2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the comprehensive electronic structure of CaA l 2 S i 2 . A pair of topological Dirac crossings is observed along the k z direction, in good agreement with the ab initio calculations, confirming the topological Dirac semimetal nature of the compound. Our study expands the topological material family on Si-containing compounds, which have great application potential in realizing low-cost, nontoxic electronic devices with topological quantum states.

Electron thermalization and relaxation in laser-heated nickel by few-femtosecond core-level transient absorption spectroscopy

Direct measurements of photoexcited carrier dynamics in nickel are made using few-femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy at the nickel M 2,3 edge. It is observed that the core-level absorption line shape of photoexcited nickel can be described by a Gaussian broadening (σ) and a red shift (ω s ) of the ground-state absorption spectrum. Theory predicts and the experimental results verify that after initial rapid carrier thermalization, the electron temperature increase (ΔT ) is linearly proportional to the Gaussian broadening factor σ, providing quantitative real-time tracking of the relaxation of the electron temperature. Measurements reveal an electron cooling time for 50 nm thick polycrystalline nickel films of 640 ± 80 fs. With hot thermalized carriers, the spectral red shift exhibits a power-law relationship with the change in electron temperature of ω s ∝ ΔT 1.5 . Rapid electron thermalization via carrier-carrier scattering accompanies and follows the nominal 4-fs photoexcitation pulse until the carriers reach a quasithermal equilibrium. Entwined with a <6 fs instrument response function, carrier thermalization times ranging from 34 fs to 13 fs are estimated from experimental data acquired at different pump fluences and it is observed that the electron thermalization time decreases with increasing pump fluence. Here, the study provides an initial example of measuring electron temperature and thermalization in metals in real time with XUV light, and it lays a foundation for further investigation of photoinduced phase transitions and carrier transport in metals with core-level absorption spectroscopy.

Observation of topological Dirac fermions and surface states in superconducting BaSn3

The interplay between topological electronic structure and superconductivity has attracted tremendous research interests recently as they could induce topological superconductivity (TSCs) which may be used to realize topological qubits for quantum computation. Among various TSC candidates, superconducting BaSn 3 (T c ~ 4.4K) has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) hosting two pairs of Dirac points along the Γ-A direction. Here, by combining the use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we identified the predicted topological Dirac fermions and confirmed the TDS nature of the compound. In addition, we observed surface states connecting the Dirac points. Our observations demonstrate BaSn 3 as a superconductor with nontrivial topological electronic structures.

Quantum many-body simulations of the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model in ultracold optical lattices

Understanding quantum many-body states of correlated electrons is one main theme in modern condensed-matter physics. Given that the Fermi-Hubbard model, the prototype of correlated electrons, was recently realized in ultracold optical lattices, it is highly desirable to have controlled numerical methodology to provide precise finite-temperature results upon doping to directly compare with experiments. Here, we demonstrate the exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) algorithm [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. X 8, 031082 (2018)], complemented by independent determinant quantum Monte Carlo, offers a powerful combination of tools for this purpose. XTRG provides full and accurate access to the density matrix and thus various spin and charge correlations, down to an unprecedented low temperature of a few percent of the tunneling energy. Finally, we observe excellent agreement with ultracold fermion measurements at both half filling and finite doping, including the sign-reversal behavior in spin correlations due to formation of magnetic polarons, and the attractive hole-doublon and repulsive hole-hole pairs that are responsible for the peculiar bunching and antibunching behaviors of the antimoments.

Nanocrystalline strain glass TiNiPt and its superelastic behavior

TiNi-based shape-memory alloys are known to exhibit a strain glass state under certain conditions, generally in the presence of high-density defects such as excess solute atoms or alloying elements, dislocations, and nanoprecipitates. In this paper, we report a strain glass transition in a nanocrystalline Ti 50 Ni 35 Pt 15 alloy. The nanocrystalline strain glass state is achieved by a combined effect of high-density grain boundaries and high concentration doping of Pt atoms in the B2 matrix. The nanocrystalline Ti 50 Ni 35 Pt 15 strain glass alloy showed a large near-complete progressive superelasticity with a recovery strain of about 6% and a low apparent Young's modulus of about 30 GPa in a wide temperature range of over 200 °C. In situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurement showed that the strain glass B2 [B2(SG)] phase experienced B2(SG)→R→B19 transformation upon loading and B19→B2(SG) upon unloading. The findings of this study provide insight for the development of nanocrystalline strain glass shape-memory alloys.

Anisotropy of the magnetic and transport properties of EuZn 2 As 2

Several recent studies have shown that the anisotropy in the magnetic structure of EuCd 2 As 2 plays a significant role in stabilizing the Weyl nodes. Therefore, to investigate the relationship between magnetic anisotropy and Weyl physics, we present a comparative study between EuZn 2 As 2 and EuCd 2 As 2 that are isostructural but with different magnetic anisotropy. We performed structural analysis, electronic transport, and magnetization experiments on millimeter-sized single crystals of EuZn 2 As 2 , and compared the results to those of EuCd 2 As 2 . By combining the first principle calculations and neutron diffraction experiment, we identify the magnetic ground state of EuZn 2 As 2 as A-type antiferromagnetic order with a transition temperature (T_N = 19.6 K) twice that of EuCd 2 As 2 . Like EuCd 2 As 2 , the negative magnetoresistance of EuZn 2 As 2 is observed after suppressing the resistivity peak at T_N with increasing fields. However, the anisotropy in both transport and magnetization are much reduced in EuZn 2 As 2 . The difference could be ascribed to the weaker spin-orbit coupling, more localized d orbitals, and a larger contribution from the Eu s orbitals in the zinc compound, as suggested by the electronic band calculations. The same band structure effect could be also responsible for the observation of a smaller nonlinear anomalous Hall effect in EuZn 2 As 2 compared to EuCd 2 As 2 .

Interface engineering of phase separation in SrRuO 3 /SrTiO 3 hybrid superlattices

Most observed phase separation phenomena in complex oxides occur in systems with chemical dopants or structural defects, and theories have established the strong connection between phase separation and the random distribution of chemical dopants. Recent experiments on fabricated high-quality oxide superlattices also confirmed that the phase separation is suppressed in the clean systems without chemical disorders. Thus far, phase separation in strongly correlated oxides without the need of chemical dopants or structural defects has not been fully demonstrated. Here, we have built chemically ordered hybrid superlattices using prototypical SrRuO 3 and SrTiO 3 perovskite oxides. Contrary to previous understandings, we observe phase separation of two magnetic phases with different spin easy axes. We elucidate this phenomenon through first-principles calculations that the hybrid superlattices have a spontaneous structural instability, leading to a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. In this work, our findings provide an alternative pathway other than chemical doping to introduce phase separation in correlated oxides and imply that phase separation can exist in clean systems without the need of chemical disorders.

Electronic origin of half-metal to semiconductor transition and colossal magnetoresistance in spinel HgCr 2 Se 4

Half metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and are crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr 2 Se 4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr 2 Se 4 (n–HgCr 2 Se 4 ) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (E F ) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidence of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr 2 Se 4 , which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore Yb 2 ( Ti 1 - x Sn x ) 2 O 7

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with nonmagnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the nonmagnetic ion sites of pyrochlore Yb 2 ⁢(Ti 1-x⁢ Sn x ) 2⁢ O 7 induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Yb 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7 , order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the nonmagnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Further, our study demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the nonmagnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Fractional AC Josephson effect in a topological insulator proximitized by a self-formed superconductor

A lateral Josephson junction in which the surface of a 3D topological insulator serves as the weak link should support topologically protected excitations related to Majorana fermions. The resulting 4π-periodic current-phase relationship could be detected under high-frequency excitation by the suppression of odd Shapiro steps. Here, in this study, we demonstrate such devices through the self-formation of a Pd-Te superconducting layer from a telluride topological insulator, and observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps. Other devices, including those where the Pd-Te layer is bolstered by an additional Al layer, show no suppression of Shapiro steps, a difference supported by simulations. Though we rule out the known trivial causes of suppressed Shapiro steps in our devices, we nevertheless argue that corroborating measurements and disorder-aware theoretical descriptions of these systems are needed before confidently claiming the observation of Majorana states.

Direct observation of the exotic β – γ – α decay mode in the T z = – 1 nucleus Na 20

The exotic β – γ – α decay mode of 20 Na has been directly observed for the first time in the Day-one experiment at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility. The 20 Na source was produced by using a 100-MeV proton beam bombarding a stack of microporous MgO thick target and delivered as an intense mass separated beam after online ionization. A high-efficiency simultaneous measurement of β, γ, and α transitions enables the β-delayed γ – γ and α – γ coincidence spectroscopy. Here three β – γ – α exotic decay sequences in 20 Na are discovered, which expands the rare decay modes observed in β decay. Moreover, a β – α –decay sequence to the 6130-keV 3 – state of 16 O is observed, which is likely through the 12367-keV 1 + state in 20 Ne. The experimentally deduced B(F) and B(GT) are compared to the shell-model calculation, the allowed β transition strengths can be well accounted for by using sd shell-model space interactions.
