Simulation of the Charge Measurements for the SuperCDMS Soudan Experiment

Astronomical observations lead us to believe that dark matter constitutes the majority of the mass of the Universe, yet it has never been directly observed experimentally. The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Experiment (SuperCDMS) aims to discover the particle nature of dark matter, by developing and using some of the most sensitive detectors ever built. The SuperCDMS detectors are capable of rejecting known particles to search for dark matter interactions, but the discrimination is a complicated analysis task. Previous analyses with SuperCDMS set world leading sensitivity limits to dark matter interactions, but the analysis techniques have not been based on simulations. Now we have developed an efficient simulations infrastructure that will help better understand the detectors, develop a better background model, and optimize the next generation dark matter searches. In this thesis we present the fully-functional simulations infrastructure to produce high quality samples a s well as results for the charge system readout simulations, and comparisons to expectations from data. We show that our simulations well-reproduce dominant features of data, bringing SuperCDMS closer to a robust simulation-based analysis method, much needed for the upcoming SuperCDMS dark matter searches.

FY19 FES Theory Performance Target (Final Report)

Understanding the relevant turbulent transport mechanisms at the edge of a high-performance tokamak is essential for predicting and optimizing the H-mode pedestal structure in future burning plasma devices. Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations will be performed based on representative experimental pedestal scenarios in order to clarify which instabilities are most important for each of the particle and heat transport channels. Edge transport modeling will be performed in order to estimate and bound the particle and heat sources—e.g., the ionization density source and the atomic energy loss channels due to ionization, charge exchange, and radiation. Comparisons will be made with data from the DIII-D, JET, C-Mod and NSTX or MAST experiments.

Inclusive Charged-Current Electron Neutrino Interactions in SBND

The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND), a 112 ton liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC), is the near detector of the Short- Baseline Neutrino Program at Fermilab. Due to its proximity to the Booster Neutrino Beam target, SBND has already seen a record-breaking number of electron neutrino interactions on argon. We present preliminary results from SBND’s differential inclusive electron neutrino charged-current analysis from our first year of beam data, selecting over 2,000 interactions. This analysis will present the largest sample of electron neutrinos on argon to date, as well as the first differential cross section measurement of electron neutrinos. This poster will give an overview of the selection, cross-section extraction, and demonstrate SBND’s detector and electromagnetic shower reconstruction performance through data/MC comparisons.

Isotopic composition of low energy beryllium in the galactic cosmic rays

The multielement charged-particle telescope on the IMP-5 satellite obtained data essentially continuously for more than three years in the interplanetary medium under stable instrument conditions which have made it possible to separate the H, He, and Be isotopes in the galactic cosmic radiation using the technique of double dE/dx vs residual E and particle range measurements. Special emphasis is placed on demonstrating that in the energy range from 50 to 150 MeV/nucleon the instrument clearly resolved Be-7 vs Be-9. A detailed analysis of approximately 100 Be events collected over the mission lifetime yields the ratios (Be-7/Be) = 0.50 plus or minus 0.07, (Be-9/Be) = 0.41 plus or minus 0.10, and (Be-10/Be) = 0.09 plus or minus 0.10. These results are consistent with current models of galactic cosmic ray propagation after taking account of the effects of solar modulation.

Rocket-borne time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Theoretical and numerical analyses are made of planar, cylindrical and spherical-electrode two-field time-of-flight mass spectrometers in order to optimize their operating conditions. A method is introduced which can improve the resolving power of these instruments by a factor of 7.5. Potential barrier gating in time-of-flight mass spectrometers is also analyzed. Experimental studies of a miniature cylindrical-electrode and a hemispherical-electrode time-of-flight mass spectrometer are presented. Their sensitivity and ability to operate at D-region pressures with an open source make them ideal instruments for D-region ion composition measurements. A sounding rocket experiment package carrying a cylindrical electrode time-of-flight mass spectrometer was launched. The data indicate that essentially 100% of the positive electric charge on positive ions is carried by ions with mass-to-charge ratios greater than 500 below an altitude of 92 km. These heavy charge carriers were present at altitudes up to about 100 km.

Gridless retarding potential analyzer for use in very-low-energy charged particle detection

The theory of the hyperbolic retarding potential analyzer in the electrostatic mode is developed in detail and verified in the laboratory. A monoenergetic electron beam is used for the laboratory investigation. The analyzer (acronym HARP) has advantages over other conventional electrostatic analyzers; among them are less contact potential influence and high throughput because of the symmetry shape of the analyzer. The most useful application of the HARP is in detecting low-energy charged particles. A sample of low-energy particle data obtained in the earth's ionosphere is given.

Determination of the structure and heating mechanisms of coronal loops from soft X-ray observations with the solar probe

High resolution soft X-ray imaging from the solar probe is justified in terms of the expected scientific returns which include the determination of the temperature and density structure of a coronal loop. The advantages of the grazing incidence telescope over the multiple pinhole camera are discussed. An instrument package is described which includes a grazing incidence mirror, a thermal prefilter, a three position filter wheel and a focal plane detector baselined as an 800 by 800 back-illuminated charge coupled device. The structural assembly together with the data processing equipment would draw heavily on the designs being developed for the Solar Polar Mission.

Development of a phase-change thermal storage system using modified anhydrous sodium hydroxide for solar electric power generation

A thermal storage system for use in solar power electricity generation was investigated analytically and experimentally. The thermal storage medium is principally anhydrous NaOH with 8% NaNO3 and 0.2% MnO2. Heat is charged into storage at 584 K and discharged from storage at 582 K by Therminol-66. Physical and thermophysical properties of the storage medium were measured. A mathematical simulation and computer program describing the operation of the system were developed. A 1/10 scale model of a system capable of storing and delivering 3.1 x 10 to the 6th power kJ of heat was designed, built, and tested. Tests included steady state charging, discharging, idling, and charge-discharge conditions simulating a solar daily cycle. Experimental data and computer-predicted results are correlated. A reference design including cost estimates of the full-size system was developed.

A study of solar flare electron events from October 1972 through December 1974 from Imp 7 and 8

Data from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Charged Particle Measurement Experiment aboard Imp H and J were searched for solar flare produced intensity increases in greater than 0.2-MeV electrons during the 26-month period from October 1972 through December 1974. Of the 44 solar electron events found during this period, 31 were isolated for a detailed statistical study. Systematics among the characteristics of the electron profiles (e.g., peak intensity times and count rates) and those of the associated flares (e.g., H-alpha onset times, H-alpha importance class, heliocentric coordinates, etc.) were examined, and the significant results are presented in several scatter plots. The results reveal that the time delay between the flare onset and the arrival of the peak electron intensity at 1 AU (time to maximum) is a function of the flare's deviation in heliolongitude from the solar region which was well connected to the earth via a magnetic flux tube; the well-connected flares produced electron intensity maxima in the least time.

Electromagnetic scattering lifetimes for dust in Jupiter's ring

The lifetime of the charged, micron-sized dust particles found to lie in a ring at 1.8 Jupiter radii from Jupiter against electromagnetic scattering is estimated. Interactions of the particles with the Jovian magnetic field dipole are found to spread particle orbits out to a much greater extent than observed for particle charges greater than -10 V, and to result in slightly eccentric, open orbits for the dust particles, with eccentricities dependent on particle size. In addition, fluctuations within the magnetic field are found to lead to significant changes in the eccentricity and inclination of the ring particle orbits. It is concluded that Jovian ring particles, if charged to -10 V as is consistent with Voyager data, will be strongly perturbed and scattered on a short time scale (100 yr), so the ring must be constantly replenished or it is a temporary phenomenon. Finally, the dust cloud observed to extend above, below, and beyond the Jupiter ring is attributed to the electromagnetic scattering of particles smaller than the ring particles.
