Annual Performance Testing of Tracer Gas and Tracer Aerosol Detectors for use in Radionuclide NESHAP Compliance Testing

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL’s) compliance with Radionuclide NESHAP 1 regulations is managed by the Radionuclide Air Emissions Management (RAEM) team, part of LANL’s Compliance Programs group (EPC-CP). One area of the Radionuclide NESHAP addresses requirements for siting a stack sample system. This memo documents the most recent performance tests of the sulfur hexafluoride detectors for use in stack gas mixing tests, as well as the functional trending test on a pair of optical particle counters, comparing results from a non-calibrated instrument to a calibrated instrument.

Dual microscopy to explore enhanced atmospheric ice nucleation on multi-component aerosols

Using an optical microscopy setup adapted to in-situ studies of ice formation at ambient pressure, we examined a specific multicomponent mineral, microcline, with the ultimate aim of gaining a more realistic understanding of ice nucleation in Earth’s atmosphere. We focused on a perthitic feldspar, microcline, to test the hypothesis that co-existence in some feldspars of K-rich and Na-rich phases are contributing to enhanced ice nucleation. On a sample deliberately chosen to contain lamella, a typical perthitic microstructure, and flat surface regions next to each other, we performed a series of ice formation experiments. We found microcline to promote ice formation, causing a large number of ice nucleation events at around - 27°C. The number of ice nuclei decreased from experimental run to experimental run, indicating surface aging upon repeated exposure to humidity. An analysis of 10 experimental runs of identical conditions did not reveal an obvious enhancement of ice formation at the lamellar microstructure. Instead, we find efficient nucleation at various surface sites that produce orientationally aligned ice crystallites with asymmetric shape. Based on this observation we propose that surface steps running along select directions produce microfacets of an orientation that is favorable to enhanced ice nucleation, similar to previously reported for K-rich feldspars.

Sea Breeze Influence on Aerosols and Convection in the Southeastern US

The goal of this research is to describe the inland penetrating sea breeze and interactions with atmospheric phenomena across multiple scales, thereby establishing a baseline of understanding. The land-ocean-atmosphere interface in the southeastern US drives regional sea breeze circulations that impact clouds, convection, and precipitation. We analyzed a variety of atmospheric observations to identify the characteristics and frequency of sea breezes. Sea breezes were identified all along the southeastern Atlantic coast (63% of days from March to September in 2019) at times impacting large areas of the southeastern US. They were found to penetrate inland to the Savannah River Site on about 27% of all days during the typical sea breeze season (March to October) from 2015 to 2020, often leaving a residual layer the following day. Future work focuses on modeling studies, analysis of additional data, and climate impacts on sea breezes.

Collaborative Proposal: Fire, Dust, Air and Water: Improving Aerosol Biogeochemistry Interactions in ACME

This document describes results from a grant studying the role of fire in the Earth system, as a source of nutrients to land and marine ecosystems. Iron is a nutrient that often limits plant growth in the oceans. Wildfires, as well as the combustion when we are burning fossil fuels, releases iron to the atmosphere that can later be deposited on the oceans, fueling plant growth.

Structural Analysis Report for Sandia High Altitude Aerosol Research (SHAAR) Payloads

Sandia National Laboratories has interest in mounting enclosures to gather scientific data aboard NASA scientific balloons. This report documents the structural integrity of three separate payloads considered ‘piggybacks.’ To date, there are no design criteria for piggybacks, therefore each piggyback shall follow the same design requirements set by NASA per the Gondola Structural Design Requirements. This analysis report shall describe how each payload meets the design requirements laid out in the Gondola Design Requirements.
