Working with Us

NREL is focused on the long-term impact that strategic partnerships can have on energy research and development, grid security and resilience, the U.S. economy, and Americans' lives. NREL works with commercial and noncommercial entities, including national security and defense partners, national laboratories, and research institutions to advance foundational research and development - pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery and accelerating breakthroughs in energy innovation.

Work With Us to Advance Cybersecurity for the Current and Future Grid

The energy sector is undergoing rapid change. Advanced technologies and controls, digitally connected devices, and a mix of generation sources offer increased energy reliability and security, reduced energy costs, and enhanced grid operations. But they can also carry physical and cybersecurity risks that are not yet fully understood. With deep expertise in advanced energy technologies, the National Laboratory of the Rockies is examining the cybersecurity implications of evolving systems and developing cutting-edge tools, novel approaches, and innovative research capabilities to address sector-wide challenges. Together with our partners, we are working to achieve a more secure, defensible, and reliable grid.

Working with Bézier Curves as bases for Functional Expansion Tallies

Functional expansion tallies (FETs) are powerful tools for getting more information per history from Monte Carlo simulations, but in the past they have been constrained to orthogonal bases. Bézier curves are used widely in computer aided design (CAD) geometry kernels and could be well-suited for FETs due to their ability to assume many arbitrary shapes, but they use nonorthogonal bases. Recent developments in 2021 have made nonorthogonal FETs possible. The convergence of Bézier curve FETs in both polynomial order and number of samples is explored in this work. It is shown that these bases are well-suited for representing normal distributions and this opens the door to the possibility of other CAD-derived FET bases.

Utility Energy Service Contract Guide: A Resource for Contracting Officers Working on UESC Projects

A Utility Energy Service Contract (UESC) is a limited-source contract between a federal agency and serving utility for energy management services including energy and water efficiency improvements and demand-reduction services. In a UESC, the Contracting Officer (CO) will lead the acquisition effort, supported by technically knowledgeable staff working closely with the utility, to assess potential, investigate technical and economic feasibility, and ensure a fair and reasonable price for design and implementation of the project. The UESC Guide is a compilation of samples and templates developed as a resource to help COs implement Task Orders (TOs) for UESCs under existing U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Areawide Contracts (AWC). All samples and templates provided in this guide were derived from actual UESC project contract documents and will be available for download on FEMP’s website at https://www.energy.gov/node/850656. Templates in Microsoft Word can be modified to address each agency’s unique acquisition process.

Strym: A Python Package for Real-time CAN Data Logging, Analysis and Visualization to Work with USB-CAN Interface

In this report, we describe a data analysis tool developed for decoding and analyzing vehicle data obtained from a passenger vehicle’s onboard controller area network (CAN) bus. The tool developed in this paper provides a timeseries framework to perform domain-specific analysis at scale when interpreting data from a vehicle or a collection of vehicles in light of how to design intelligent vehicle applications. The tool, called Strym, exploits the CAN bus mechanism of modern vehicles to capture data using commercially available CAN-to-USB hardware Comma.ai Panda devices, managed through open-source software Libpanda. Strym permits the decoding of vendor-specific CAN messages in a vehicle-agnostic manner. Through this, a researcher can characterize data throughput, assess data quality, and perform analyses. Such analyses are useful in a number of research such as studying human driving behavior in mixed-autonomy, new driver models, rare-event detection, traffic flow estimation, and custom control of vehicles.

Guidelines for Home Energy Professionals: Standard Work Specifications (SWS) Maintenance Charter and Procedures

The SWS were built by industry, for industry, and DOE and NREL facilitated the process to create them. The goal of the SWS maintenance process is to continue the consensus-based engagement to ensure the SWS content remains a relevant resource for promoting industry- accepted practices and maintaining consistency throughout the industry. This SWS Maintenance Charter and Procedures document defines the SWS maintenance process to provide transparency to stakeholders in how the SWS are maintained.
