Single-event transient testing of low dropout PNP series linear voltage regulators

As demand for high-speed, on-board, digital-processing integrated circuits on spacecraft increases (field-programmable gate arrays and digital signal processors in particular), the need for the next generation point-of-load (POL) regulator becomes a prominent design issue. Shrinking process nodes have resulted in core rails dropping to values close to 1.0 V, drastically reducing margin to standard switching converters or regulators that power digital ICs. The goal of this task is to perform SET characterization of several commercial POL converters, and provide a discussion of the impact of these results to state-of-the-art digital processing IC through laser and heavy ion testing

Soft-Switching GaN-Based Isolated Power Conversion System for Small Satellites with Wide Input Voltage Range

As we pursue the advancement of small satellites for space missions with more capabilities, there is a significant need for cutting-edge, modularly configurable, high density power converters. This article proposes a fixed switching frequency, high efficiency, compact isolated converter for sensitive loads such as radar, communication systems, or other instruments on small satellites.

Space Rated High Voltage Plasma Generating Supply

The use of plasma for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) applications (such as water treatment, acid production, plant seed activation, biofilm sanitization, or waste gasification) is an active area of research at the KSC Applied Chemistry Lab (ACL). The generation of plasma for experimentation has thus far been done with lab-rated power supplies which are unsuitable for space applications, and no suitable supply is readily available for purchase. This project tackled the development of a low TRL prototype 500 W power supply intended for generating plasma in space. The design was based on similar power electronic circuits used for electric propulsion systems and was adapted for use in ISRU applications. This technology will enable KSC’s plasma-based ISRU related technologies to be demonstrated in the space environment.

Engineered Hexagonal Boron Nitride:Titanium Dioxide Composites for High Voltage Insulation

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and Titanium dioxide are both ceramic materials with widespread use in commercial and consumer applications in everything from cosmetics and paint to deep space satellite components. As a dielectric material, hBN is electrically insulating, thermally conductive, and stable to most temperatures and environments. Titanium dioxide is also a good electrical insulator with a wide bandgap and large dielectric constant, as well as high temperature tolerance and chemical stability. This presentation covers our recent efforts to combine the best properties of hBN and titanium dioxide to produce an intercalated hBN:titanium dioxide composite which was then further processed and incorporated into polymer composites, as well as a standalone ceramic material for testing as a novel insulation material.
