Ultraviolet stellar spectra obtained with Skylab Experiment S019

Ultraviolet stellar spectra in the wavelength region from 130 to 500 nm were photographed during the three manned Skylab missions using a 15-cm-aperture objective-prism telescope mounted on the antisolar scientific airlock. Data at wavelengths of 200 nm or shorter were obtained for 1400 stars in 166 fields. Approximately 300 stars show absorption lines of Si IV, C IV, or C II in which the strengths and profiles show striking variations with stellar temperature and luminosity. Numerous weak lines are also observed in supergiant stars, shell stars, peculiar A stars, and Wolf-Rayet stars. Observations of comet Kohoutek show interesting variations in the strength of the OH 3090 A band.

Statistical analysis of information from long-range spacecraft

Results are presented of analysis of statistical characteristics of information from spacecraft data compression systems, ignoring the nature of channel activity. Analysis of the distribution of the number of active channels and the channel activities was performed using data from scientific experiments conducted on the Zond-1 and Venera-4 spacecraft.

Use of information-retrieval languages in automated retrieval of experimental data from long-term storage

Problems and methods are discussed of automating information retrieval operations in a data bank used for long term storage and retrieval of data from scientific experiments. Existing information retrieval languages are analyzed along with those being developed. The results of studies discussing the application of the descriptive 'Kristall' language used in the 'ASIOR' automated information retrieval system are presented. The development and use of a specialized language of the classification-descriptive type, using universal decimal classification indices as the main descriptors, is described.

Airborne measurements of solar and planetary near ultraviolet radiation during the NASA/ESA CV-900 spacelab simulation

Results from a comparative study of the feasibility of employing experiment operators on the space shuttle to acquire scientifically worthwhile data are presented. The experiments performed during these tests included spectral observations of the Sun and Venus in the near ultraviolet region. The solar measurements were analyzed to determine ozone abundance in the terrestrial atmosphere. Using a detailed spectral matching technique to compare airborne solar UV measurements with synthetic spectral profiles of sunlight, it is deduced that in winter the total atmospheric ozone abundance is about 0.33 atm/cm at midlatitudes in the northern hemisphere.

Computer Science Research at Langley

A workshop was held at Langley Research Center, November 2-5, 1981, to highlight ongoing computer science research at Langley and to identify additional areas of research based upon the computer user requirements. A panel discussion was held in each of nine application areas, and these are summarized in the proceedings. Slides presented by the invited speakers are also included. A survey of scientific, business, data reduction, and microprocessor computer users helped identify areas of focus for the workshop. Several areas of computer science which are of most concern to the Langley computer users were identified during the workshop discussions. These include graphics, distributed processing, programmer support systems and tools, database management, and numerical methods.

Air-sea interaction with SSM/I and altimeter

A number of important developments in satellite remote sensing techniques have occurred recently which offer the possibility of studying over vast areas of the ocean the temporally evolving energy exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere. Commencing in spring of 1985, passive and active microwave sensors that can provide valuable data for scientific utilization will start to become operational on Department of Defense (DOD) missions. The passive microwave radiometer can be used to estimate surface wind speed, total air column humidity, and rain rate. The active radar, or altimeter, senses surface gravity wave height and surface wind speed.

VAS demonstration: (VISSR Atmospheric Sounder) description

The VAS Demonstration (VISSR Atmospheric Sounder) is a project designed to evaluate the VAS instrument as a remote sensor of the Earth's atmosphere and surface. This report describes the instrument and ground processing system, the instrument performance, the valiation as a temperature and moisture profiler compared with ground truth and other satellites, and assesses its performance as a valuable meteorological tool. The report also addresses the availability of data for scientific research.

An experimental paradigm for team decision processes

The study of distributed information processing and decision making is presently hampered by two factors: (1) The inherent complexity of the mathematical formulation of decentralized problems has prevented the development of models that could be used to predict performance in a distributed environment; and (2) The lack of comprehensive scientific empirical data on human team decision making has hindered the development of significant descriptive models. As a part of a comprehensive effort to find a new framework for multihuman decision making problems, a novel experimental research paradigm was developed involving human terms in decision making tasks. Attempts to construct parts of an integrated model with ideas from queueing networks, team theory, distributed estimation and decentralized resource management are described.

Differential CCD photometry of faint asteroids in crowded star fields and nonphotometric sky conditions

It is demonstrated that the use of an imaging CCD detector array allows photometric observations of comparatively faint asteroids moving rapidly through a complex background of star images. The shortage of observing time is alleviated by taking advantage of the presence of comparison stars that are observed simultaneously on the CCD imaging area and at small angular separations from the asteroid. These reference stars allow the effects of thin cirrus clouds or haze to be compensated to a degree adequate for the acquisition of scientifically original data.

Measurement of HO2 and other trace gases in the stratosphere using a high resolution far-infrared spectrometer at 28 KM

The major events and results to date of the ongoing program of measuring stratospheric composition by the technique of far-infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy from a balloon-borne platform are reviewed. The highlights of this period were the two balloon flight campaigns which were performed at Palestine, Texas, both of which produced large amounts of scientifically useful data.

The tethered satellite electrodynamics experiment project

NASA and Italy's PSN have undertaken the Tethered Satellite Electrodynamics Experiment, in which two tethered bodies will be equipped with data-collecting scientific instruments, as the first stage of the development of the Tethered Satellite System that can be deployed by the Space Shuttle. The experiment will give attention to the electromagnetic interaction between the satellite/tether/orbiter system and the ambient space plasma, and should demonstrate the operation of both satellite- and Shuttle-borne electrodynamic instruments with a conductive tether.
