Decarbonizing via disparities: Problematizing the relationship between social identity and solar energy transitions in the United States
As solar adoption across the United States continues to grow, so do the gaps between rural and urban communities in how they choose to embrace these technologies, leading to serious questions of social justice and equity by researchers and policymakers alike. While recent studies have examined the racial and social justice elements of solar adoption alongside institutions' role in shaping pro-solar policies, codes, and code enforcement, an opportunity exists to discuss how the place and composition of the body politic in terms of race/ethnicity and rurality exists. This paper establishes a methodology for examining location and body politic composition concerning adopting all types of solar (residential, non-residential, utility-scale), utilizing the State of Georgia as a case study. Results indicate that the approach yields useful and informative findings; namely, there is a significant difference in adopting non-residential and utility-scale solar between rural and urban counties. We conclude by discussing further opportunities to expand on this analysis and the impact of assessing solar adoption in terms of value alignment between a body politic and the policies that shape the adoption of sustainable energy technologies. Finally, combining solar adoption information for the State of Georgia with Census data, this study compares solar adoption trends across counties--grouped by urban/rural classification and racial and ethnic majority.

Nickel-rich, volatile depleted iron meteorites: Relationships and formation processes
Ungrouped iron meteorites Tishomingo, Willow Grove, and Chinga, and group IVB iron meteorites, are Ni-rich. Similarities include enrichments of 10–100 × CI for some refractory siderophile elements, and equivalent depletions in more volatile siderophile elements. Superimposed on the overall enrichment/depletion trend, certain siderophile elements (P, W, Fe, Mo) are depleted relative to elements of similar volatility. All three ungrouped irons derive from parent bodies formed in the early Solar System. Willow Grove and Chinga are characterized by cosmic ray exposure corrected 182 W/ 184 W consistent with metal-silicate segregation on their parent bodies within 1–3 Myr of Solar System formation, within the age range determined for segregation of magmatic iron meteorite parent bodies, including group IVB irons. Tishomingo is characterized by a younger model age 4–5 Myr subsequent to Solar System formation, reflecting either late stage melting resulting from 26 Al decay, or an impact resetting. The discovery of stishovite in Tishomingo, indicating exposure to a minimum shock pressure of 8–9 GPa, is consistent with the latter. Stishovite in Tishomingo and chromite included in troilite-daubréelite in IVB irons allows oxygen isotopic composition comparison between these meteorites. Different mass independent oxygen isotopic compositions of IVB irons and Tishomingo indicate genetically distinct parent bodies. By contrast, mass independent Mo isotopic compositions overlap within analytical uncertainties, indicating a similar, carbonaceous chondrite (CC) type genetic heritage. Molybdenum and 183 W isotopic data for Chinga and Willow Grove indicate derivation from CC type parent bodies. Willow Grove shares Mo and 183 W isotopic compositions with the Ni-rich South Byron Trio (SBT) grouplet and the Milton pallasite. These Ni-rich meteorites likely formed in the same general nebular environment as other CC planetesimals, likely the outer Solar System. Highly siderophile element (HSE) abundances of Willow Grove and Tishomingo are similar to some IVB meteorites, consistent with formation by moderate degrees of fractional crystallization from initial metallic melts with low S and P, and modestly fractionated HSE. The comparable HSE abundances of Tishomingo and Willow Grove to some IVB irons, yet substantially higher Ni concentrations, indicate formation on parent bodies with lower bulk HSE abundances or HSE concentration in proportionally smaller volumes of metal. HSE abundances in Chinga are considerably lower than in IVB irons, highly fractionated, and processes responsible for these remain elusive. For IVB irons and these ungrouped irons, high temperature condensation likely dominated the enrichment and depletion of the refractory and volatile siderophile elements, respectively. Parent body degassing may have also played a role. Relative depletion of volatile siderophile elements is not, however, a universal feature of high-Ni meteorites. The SBT and Milton pallasite are Ni-rich, but less depleted in the more volatile siderophile elements. Nickel enrichment was likely driven by oxidation of Fe metal during parent body accretion or core segregation. Oxidation of the Tishomingo and Willow Grove parent bodies may have occurred at ~ IW + 1, indicated by relative Mo and W depletions due to metal/water reaction during differentiation. Late-stage reduction, indicated by the presence of Cr-bearing sulfides in Tishomingo and IVB irons, may have resulted from exhaustion of the oxidant.
Quantifying spatial and vertical variations in soil C:N relationships in permafrost-affected landscapes
Permafrost regions are experiencing rapid changes that affect carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, with implications for vegetation dynamics and gas exchanges with the atmosphere. Soil C:N ratio is a key indicator of organic matter quality, yet spatial estimates of N stocks and C:N ratios lag behind those for C. We used quantile regression forests to compare direct and indirect digital soil mapping approaches for predicting soil C:N ratios at 0–30, 30–60, and 60–100 cm depths across a latitudinal transect in Alaska. The indirect approach – deriving C:N from separately predicted C and N stocks – outperformed direct mapping for the surface layer (0–30 cm), while direct mapping was marginally better at greater depths. However, prediction accuracy decreased with depth for both methods. Temperature and topography were the most important predictors. Both approaches overestimated low and underestimated high C:N ratios, with direct mapping showing greater bias. Our results underscore the challenges of modeling C:N ratios in heterogeneous, data-sparse permafrost soils, but also suggest that indirect mapping holds promise if supported by more extensive datasets.
Revealing the relationship between molecular weight of lignin and its color, UV-protecting property
Lignin has great potential as a natural, green, and sustainable broad-spectrum sunscreen active ingredient. However, the coexistence of dark color and sunscreen properties hinders its application in cosmetics. In this study, we focus on the effects of the molecular weight of lignin on tis UV-protecting property and color in order to prepare lignin-based sunscreen with high performance. We report a prepared sunscreen containing low molecular weight lignin (F5, <1000 g/mol) exhibits good UV-protecting property (sun protection factor (SPF) = 7.14) and light color advantages (ΔE = 46.2). Moreover, a strong synergistic effect on UV-protecting property exists between low molecular weight lignin and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), resulting in high SPF of F5@EHMC-based sunscreen (55.56). Additionally, added TiO 2 can efficiently mitigate the dark color of lignin-based sunscreens due to prominent covering power of TiO 2 . Moreover, lignin-based sunscreens have good biocompatibility with HaCaT cells. This work is useful for understanding the mechanism of the UV-protecting property and dark color of lignin, and for designing an efficient and safe lignin-based sunscreen.

Investigating the relationship between radial pre-stress magnitude and ballistic projectile dwell in heavy confined ceramic targets
A series of bare silicon carbide ceramic armour disks were manufactured with high-strength steel containment to induce varying magnitudes of radial pre-stress. The induced radial stresses, ranging from 0 to 900 MPa, were measured via neutron diffraction and verified by comparison with numerical calculations. Four targets of each configuration, referred to as slip-fit, moderate pre-stress, and high pre-stress, were subject to ballistic testing with hemispherical-nose, tungsten heavy alloy long rod projectiles to determine the interface defeat transition velocity. In-situ diagnostics were unsuccessful in aiding the identification of interface defeat, necessitating a reliance on post-mortem assessment. A transition velocity of approx. 1000 m/s was identified for the unstressed target, increasing to approx. 1200 m/s for the pre-stressed configurations. No performance effect was discernible between the moderate (372 MPa) and high (899 MPa) pre-stress configurations, suggesting that an optimal performance may be achieved for lower pre-stress levels (i.e., <372 MPa). Additionally, the test results were compared with four semi-analytical predictions of interface defeat performance and good agreement was found, albeit with significant range in the model predictions.
