Distributed fibre-optic temperature sensor for cryogenic applications based on detection of boson components of Raman light scattering

The possibility of designing a distributed fibre-optic sensor, allowing one to measure cryogenic temperatures (to liquid nitrogen boiling point), is experimentally demonstrated. The principle of operation of the sensor is based on measuring the intensity of boson peaks of Raman scattering in a fibre material, which are spaced by 1 to 3 THz from the probe frequency. The measurements are performed using a single-mode telecommunication fibre with a 15-μm-thick polyimide coating. The probe wavelength is 1.55 μm, the sensor spatial resolution is 4 m, and the averaging time is 60 s. Experiments are carried out in the temperature range of 75.6 – 79.6 K, with a temperature resolution of 0.5 K. (paper)

Detection of coherent optical phonons in a thin bismuth film by ultrafast electron diffraction

Coherent dynamics of lattice oscillations in a ∼20-nm-thick film obtained by thermal sputtering of bismuth is studied using ultrashort electron bunches synchronised with femtosecond laser pulses irradiating the sample. The Fourier analysis of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) data shows that the observed modulation of the signal is due to the ensemble of modes corresponding to optical phonons with frequencies of approximately 3, 6 and 9 THz. A conclusion is made that these peaks correspond to the manifestation of the bismuth A{sub 1g} mode (three-terahertz peak), as well as its first and second overtones, which is probably due to quantum confinement in a 20-nm Bi nanostructure. The possibility of a detailed study of the quantum-size effect in bismuth with the help of a transmission UED is analysed. (paper)

Optical properties of Platonic clusters of plasmonic nanoparticles

In the framework of the dipole approximation, we have developed a model of optical properties of a meta-atom consisting of spherical nanoparticles located at the vertices of Platonic solids. Based on the model, we have found and analysed the dynamics of changes in the optical spectra with a change in the length of the edge of a polyhedron. We have observed strong hybridisation and splitting of initially degenerate modes of individual nanoparticles. The obtained results can be used as the basis for the development of an optical nanosensor, which can determine the change in the chemical and biological composition of the environment. (paper)

Luminescence relaxation dynamics for planar and rolled-up CdSe nanocrystals in a photonic-crystal matrix

Samples of inverted photonic-crystal films, containing planar and rolled-up (in the form of scrolls) CdSe nanocrystals, are studied. The transmission spectra of these structures are recorded. These spectra (along with the change in colour) confirm the incorporation of nanocrystals into the films. The photoluminescence decay dynamics is investigated. It is shown that the photonic-crystal matrix affects significantly the luminescence kinetics of nanostructures. The differences in the decay curves measured for nanocrystals in a photonic-crystal matrix and for their ensemble on a glass substrate are explained by the influence of the photonic-crystal stop band and the orientational effect of crystalline matrix, which orients anisotropic nanocrystals and prevents them from aggregation. The results obtained may be important for potential applications in optoelectronic devices. (paper)

Structural phase transition and manifestation of eddy currents in IR reflection spectra of PbSnTe semiconductor films

Infrared reflection spectra of thin (∼60 nm) Pb{sub 1−x} Sn{sub x}Te (x = 0.25, 0.53, 0.59) films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs/CdTe hybrid substrates have been measured at frequencies from 20 to 5500 cm{sup −1} and temperatures from 5 to 300 K. The spectra have been used to determine temperature-dependent transverse phonon and plasmon frequencies in the films, which has made it possible to identify a structural phase transition at T{sub C} ≈ 50 K. The plasma frequency of the films has been shown to increase with decreasing band gap on cooling from 300 to 77 K. The increase in plasma frequency is mainly attributable to the increase in carrier concentration and a transition of the carriers from vortex states on the film surface to the valence band. (paper)

Numerical simulation of dispersion and nonlinear characteristics of microstructured silica fibres with a thin suspended core in a wide range of their parameters

Dispersion and nonlinear characteristics of microstructured silica fibres with a thin suspended core surrounded by three, four or six air holes have been studied theoretically in the wavelength range 1 – 2 μm. It has been shown that, owing to strong fundamental mode confinement near the core, the Kerr nonlinearity coefficient can exceed the nonlinearity coefficient of standard telecom fibre SMF28e by two orders of magnitude. The large waveguide contribution allows for effective group velocity dispersion management. Estimates are presented that demonstrate the feasibility of using suspended core fibre exhibiting Kerr nonlinearity for generating non-classical light: a state with squeezed quantum fluctuations in one of the quadrature components of a cw laser signal at a wavelength near 1.55 μm. Degradation of the contrast of a short light pulse in a CPA system

We have calculated the effect of four-wave mixing of the main radiation pulse with the background radiation components on the value of the output radiation contrast in a chirped pulse amplification system of petawatt laser facilities. Formulae are presented that make it possible to quantify the contributions of two mechanisms, i.e. Kerr nonlinearity of the refractive index of the amplifying medium and gain saturation. For typical values of the nonlinear refractive index, both contributions are comparable. The possibility of mutual quenching of nonlinear contributions is noted. The influence of spectral filtering of radiation on the output pulse contrast is considered. (paper)

Inhomogeneous broadening and splitting of lines in spectra of YAG : Tm

The shape and fine structure of lines due to Tm{sup 3+} f −f electronic transitions in multifunctional Y{sub 3}Al{sub 5}O{sub 12} garnet crystals have been studied by high-resolution spectroscopy. The observed inhomogeneously broadened lines have a Lorentzian shape, suggesting that point defects make a predominant contribution to the inhomogeneous broadening. Moreover, Y{sub Al} antisite defects, which are formed during high-temperature melt growth, produce spectral satellites near the main lines. (paper)

Diffractive optical elements for multiplexing structured laser beams

We consider methods for obtaining a multitude of structured laser beams (multiplexing) from an illuminating beam (both structured and unstructured) with the help of diffractive optical elements (DOEs). An approach of ‘intelligent multiplexing’ is proposed to describe and develop the methods. A DOE is calculated that forms a set of five diffraction orders located in a line. An example of focusing a set of doughnut-shaped azimuthally polarised laser beams using a diffraction beam splitter is presented. Efficient multiplexing of first-order vortex beams in a two-dimensional region is implemented by a two-dimensional diffraction grating. An approach is proposed and realised in which the transmission functions of a two-dimensional diffraction beam splitter and the elements forming structured laser beams with specified parameters are combined into the transmission function of one element. Such DOEs can be used in optical communication systems for encoding and decoding data. The possibility of using binary curved fork-shaped gratings for the formation of doughnut-shaped three-dimensional vortex beams, which are detected outside the focal plane, is demonstrated. This approach provides additional advantages for safe data transmission; it can be used in laser processing of materials and in laser manipulation applications. (paper)

Limiting spectral and angular characteristics of multilayer relief – phase diffraction microstructures

Methods for estimating the parameters of relief – phase diffraction microstructures (local and integral Q-factors) are extended to the case of multilayer double-relief sawtooth microstructures, which makes it possible to select the best combinations of optical materials for multilayer microstructures at a very low computational burden. An approach to the study of multilayer microstructures is proposed, based on the combined use of Q-factors and the method of rigorous analysis of coupled waves, which allows one to estimate the limiting spectral and angular characteristics of multilayer microstructures of various types. Technology of thin-rod Yb : YAG amplifiers with a high pulse energy and average power

Technology for producing thin-rod Yb : YAG laser amplifiers is improved, which is aimed at increasing the output pulse energy and includes the development of a new method for mounting active elements into a cooling system and employment of more persistent dielectric coatings of rod ends. An influence of a thermal lens on the beam size in an active element is theoretically studied and the parameters are found, which provide equal beam sizes at input and output rod ends. The output pulse energy of 4 mJ is obtained without optical breakdown of the output end, which substantially exceeds the previously obtained results. The amplifier demonstrates an average power of 60 W and maintains a high beam quality. (paper)

Self-compression of laser pulses in a discrete medium

Using the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we study the laser radiation self-action dynamics in a nanostructured waveguide system. It is shown that for a laser pulse energy exceeding the critical value, the nonlinear evolution of the wave field markedly differs from the corresponding process in a continuous medium. While the pulse propagates in a discrete medium, its length decreases to values comparable to the scale of the structure and the velocity decreases to zero. The system parameters are determined at which the wave field after the laser pulse termination begins to propagate in the opposite direction in a compressed form. The process of slowing down and stopping the pulse is accompanied by strong radiation losses, so that about a third of the energy of the initial field distribution remains in the final compressed state. Phase-shift speckle-shearing interferometry

We have numerically simulated the process of measuring stress – strain states by the method of speckle-shearing interferometry using the phase-shift technique. A computer model with the possibility of setting its strain and roughness is developed, which includes a model of a diffusely reflecting test object corresponding to the characteristics of a real membrane, as well as a speckle interferometer model that allows speckle interferograms to be obtained for different speckle sizes and angles between interfering beams. The process of reconstructing the object surface topogram from model speckle interferograms by the phase-shift technique is implemented. Using the developed models, a two-dimensional shearogram are obtained, which is a derivative of the strain field of a circular membrane. Comparison of the results of numerical simulation with experimental data shows that the differences (rms deviations) do not exceed 0.02 μm. It is also shown that the error of interferogram reconstruction by the phase-shift technique increases significantly when the test object strains exceed 12 μm. (paper)

Three-colour digital holographic microscopy based on a Mach – Zender interferometer and a solid-state RGB laser

We have developed a facility for recording colour digital holograms involving a Mach – Zender interferometer and a pulsed solid-state RGB laser, which radiates simultaneously at three wavelengths: 451, 532, and 634 nm. These wavelengths are obtained in the conversion of the radiation of a pulsed Nd{sup 3+} : YAG laser (1064 nm), which operates in the regime of intracavity parametric oscillation at a wavelength of 1570 nm, with the subsequent conversion of its frequencies to the red, green, and blue spectral regions in nonlinear KTP-crystal elements. The combination of this three-wavelength pulsed light source with the Mach – Zender interferometer provides the simultaneous recording of three spectral digital holograms with one matrix RGB radiation detector. Pulsed three-colour digital holography shows promise for the analysis of fast processes and rapidly varying colour phase objects. (paper)

Bragg grating inscription in photosensitive materials by an optical replication process

This paper examines the feasibility of producing multiplexed Bragg gratings for use as diffractive optical elements (DOEs) by coherent optical replication of a surface-relief phase grating into thick-film photosensitive materials. The use of such DOEs in light guide plates (LGPs) for optical imaging systems ensures energy-efficient light input into and output from LGPs and allows one to minimise their weight and size. We present simulation results for the interference structure fabrication process and recording of a series of multiplexed diffraction gratings in photosensitive materials. (paper)

Holographic reflective Bragg gratings of gain and their role in the operation of high-power pulsed lasers

The influence of reflective Bragg gratings that are formed in an active medium due to the spatial periodic modulation of gain on the spectral properties of lasing are investigated by an example of a pulsed Nd : YAG laser. It is shown that, at a certain choice of the formation regime of reflective gratings of gain, the lasing bandwidth can be reduced by a factor of 3 – 5, with a corresponding increase in the pulse energy and significant improvement of spatial beam quality. Peculiarities of adaptive phase correction of optical wave distortions under conditions of ‘strong’ intensity fluctuations

The reason for the loss of efficiency of adaptive phase correction in the propagation of optical waves in a turbulent atmosphere under conditions of ‘strong’ intensity fluctuations is experimentally explained for the first time. Based on the data from experiments conducted on both horizontal and vertical atmospheric paths, we have found that intensity fluctuations begin to significantly affect phase measurements when the coherence radius of the optical wave becomes less than the radius of the first Fresnel zone. Under these conditions, the main meter of adaptive optics systems, i. e. the Hartmann sensor, no longer provides correct measurements of the phase distribution in the presence of deep amplitude modulation. Based on the study of the behaviour of the mode components of the phase fluctuations reconstructed from the results of measurements in various operating regimes, we have found that, first of all, the amplitudes of the lowest modes of phase fluctuation expansion (tilts, defocusing, and astigmatism) are distorted, which, as the analysis shows, is very different from the regime of weak fluctuations.
